Is any other food or drink reported to have as many health benefits as green tea? The Chinese have known about the medicinal benefits of green tea since ancient times, using it to treat everything from headaches to depression. In her book Green Tea: The Natural Secret for a Healthier Life, Nadine Taylor states that green tea has been used as a medicine in China for at least 4,000 years.

Today, scientific research in both Asia and the west is providing hard evidence for the health benefits long associated with drinking green tea. For example, in 1994 the Journal of the National Cancer Institute published the results of an epidemiological study indicating that drinking green tea reduced the risk of esophageal cancer in Chinese men and women by nearly sixty percent. University of Purdue researchers recently concluded that a compound in green tea inhibits the growth of cancer cells. There is also research indicating that drinking green tea lowers total cholesterol levels, as well as improving the ratio of good (HDL) cholesterol to bad (LDL) cholesterol.

To sum up, here are just a few medical conditions in which drinking green tea is reputed to be helpful:

* cancer
* rheumatoid arthritis
* high cholesterol levels
* cariovascular disease
* infection
*

impaired immune function

What makes green tea so special?

The secret of green tea lies in the fact it is rich in catechin polyphenols, particularly epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). EGCG is a powerful anti-oxidant: besides inhibiting the growth of cancer cells, it kills cancer cells without harming healthy tissue. It has also been effective in lowering LDL cholesterol levels, and inhibiting the abnormal formation of blood clots. The latter takes on added importance when you consider that thrombosis (the formation of abnormal blood clots) is the leading cause of heart attacks and stroke.

Links are being made between the effects of drinking green tea and the "French Paradox." For years, researchers were puzzled by the fact that, despite consuming a diet rich in fat, the French have a lower incidence of heart disease than Americans. The answer was found to lie in red wine, which contains resveratrol, a polyphenol that limits the negative effects of smoking and a fatty diet. In a 1997 study, researchers from the University of Kansas determined that EGCG is twice as powerful as resveratrol, which may explain why the rate of heart disease among Japanese men is quite low, even though approximately seventy-five percent are smokers.

Why don't other Chinese teas have similar health-giving properties? Green, oolong, and black teas all come from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant. What sets green tea apart is the way it is processed. Green tea leaves are steamed, which prevents the EGCG compound from being oxidized. By contrast, black and oolong tea leaves are made from fermented leaves, which results in the EGCG being converted into other compounds that are not nearly as effective in preventing and fighting various diseases.

Other Benefits

New evidence is emerging that green tea can even help dieters. In November, 1999, the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition published the results of a study at the University of Geneva in Switzerland. Researchers found that men who were given a combination of caffeine and green tea extract burned more calories than those given only caffeine or a placebo.

Green tea can even help prevent tooth decay! Just as its bacteria-destroying abilities can help prevent food poisoning, it can also kill the bacteria that causes dental plaque. Meanwhile, skin preparations containing green tea - from deodorants to creams - are starting to appear on the market.

Harmful Effects?

To date, the only negative side effect reported from drinking green tea is insomnia due to the fact that it contains caffeine. However, green tea contains less caffeine than coffee: there are approximately thirty to sixty mg. of caffeine in six - eight ounces of tea, compared to over one-hundred mg. in eight ounces of coffee.

There are as many answers to this question as there are researchers investigating the natural properties of green tea. For example, Herbs for Health magazine cites a Japanese report stating that men who drank ten cups of green tea per day stayed cancer-free for three years longer than men who drank less than three cups a day (there are approximately 240 - 320 mg of polyphenols in three cups of green tea). Meanwhile, a study by Cleveland's Western Reserve University concluded that drinking four or more cups of green tea per day could help prevent rheumatoid arthritis, or reduce symptoms in individuals already suffering from the disease. And Japanese scientists at the Saitama Cancer Research Institute discovered that there were fewer recurrances of breast cancer, and the disease spread less quickly, in women with a history of drinking five cups or more of green tea daily.

It gets more confusing. A University of California study on the cancer-preventative qualities of green tea concluded that you could probably attain the desired level of polyphenols by drinking merely two cups per day. On the other hand, a company selling a green tea capsule formula insists that ten cups per day are necessary to reap the maximum benefits.

How can you make sense of these conflicting claims? Given all the evidence, it is probably safe to plan on drinking four to five cups of green tea per daily. If you're a real devotee, by all means drink more; but whether or not you'll derive added health benefits remains to be determined by further research.

How to Brew a Cup of Green Tea

Producing the perfect cup of green tea is a tricky process. If not handled properly, those same polyphenols that provide health benefits can ruin the flavor, making the tea taste "gassy." It's particularly important not to overbrew. While it's best to follow the manufacturer's instructions for each variety of green tea, here are some general instructions:

* Use one tea bag, or 2 - 4 grams of tea,* per cup.
* Fill a kettle with cold water and bring to a boil.
* After unplugging the kettle, allow it to stand for up to 3 minutes.
* Pour the heated water over the tea bag or tea, and allow it to steep for up to 3 minutes. If using a tea bag, remove the bag.
* Allow the tea to cool for three more minutes.

*One to two teaspoons, depending on the variety of green tea you are brewing.

I drink it cold all the time, I brew mine the day b4 and after it steeps I put it in the fridge. Seems to work fine for me, I do not know if any studies were done on hot or cold.

You can buy a big ol jug of unsweetened green and white tea at Trader Joes. Too much dark green or black tea irritates my stomach, but the green and white tea mixed does not.

Its cheap too...and please recycle your empty bottles. :)

Good to know...I might have to stop at Whole Foods tomorrow and pick some up. I have some Lipton Green Tea mix, but I am sure it's not the healthiest.

My fave beverage aside from water / unsweetened orange juice / cranberry juice.

I have a variety of brands at home, and several Chinese and Japanese coworkers. A good friend of mine buys a large supply of top-notch stuff (with matcha powder) for stock supply. Great stuff. I drink a litre of it each time I'm in. I let it steep for a good while ... get all the goodness out of the tea bags (squeezing them with a spoon) ... and fill up a 1L measuring cup (which I drink over a matter of 20 - 30 mins). Flushes me out well ... and is a great bowel/intestinal stimulant AS ARE ALL WARM/HOT BEVERAGES/LIQUIDS, as most people know :yes:

Well, I don't think it has much to do with the temperature, but it is best to drink it WITHOUT sugar! The sucrose robs you of the vital antioxidants that help to defend your body against free radicals, which tear down your muscles and speeds up the aging process. But a little sugar don't hurt every once in a while! :D

Reg',

It's a guilt-free beverage for me. I drink it straight, no chaser or additives :yes: .

I just put aside a 1L measuring cup ... let the tea bags (usually 3 of them) steep in there for a good 10 - 15 minutes, squeeze 'em with a spoon along the inside of the measuring cup to release all that goodness, and then drink it down over that next 20 - 30 min' period when it's still very warm + warm. It's best not to fuck around with your esophagus and digestive tract (amongst other areas of the body) by way of consuming solids and liquids which are either WAY TOO HOT or FAR TOO COLD. Keep a happy medium. Very warm + warm ... cool or cold. Don't POTENTIALLY harm your body with the extremes which "hurt" to consume/ingest/digest.

I've got coworkers who are very healthy ... but who seem to miss the point when it comes to tea and coffee. Alot of them mess around and throw packets full of SUGAR TWIN or SPLENDA in their shit. And a few of them put a whole bunch of HONEY in their tea (and coffee). I've heard alot of PROS + CONS on BGOL (and elsewhere) in the past year about honey. I just play it safe and don't fuck with it.

I'm gonna look into that Stevia it sounds pretty good!!
With its extracts having up to 300 times the sweetness of sugar, stevia has garnered attention with the rise in demand for low-carbohydrate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Low-carbohydrate_diet), low-sugar food alternatives. Stevia also has shown promise in medical research for treating such conditions as obesity (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obesity)[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stevia#_note-0) and high blood pressure (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_blood_pressure).[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stevia#_note-1)[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stevia#_note-2) Stevia has a negligible effect on blood glucose (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood_glucose), even enhancing glucose tolerance (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glucose_tolerance);[4] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stevia#_note-3) therefore, it is attractive as a natural sweetener to diabetics (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diabetes) and others on carbohydrate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbohydrate)-controlled diets.[5 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stevia#_note-4)

I drink my green tea straight as well. I think we are used to the strong bitterness of black tea but a quality green doesn't taste like that and after a minute you wont miss the sweetness.

Stevia is good. I find it has a little after taste I don't enjoy sometimes (maybe the brand?). Also, it is an herb so if you start to have headaches or what not it may not be for you.

General info:

"Caffeine

Green teas have about a quarter the caffeine content, by liquid volume, of coffee.[citation needed] Green teas contain two caffeine metabolites (caffeine like substances) theophylline, which is stronger than caffeine, and theobromine, which is slightly weaker than caffeine.

[edit] Potential effects of green tea on health

Main article: Potential effects of tea on health

[edit] History

There is archaeological evidence that suggests that tea has been consumed for almost 5000 years, with China and India being two of the first countries to cultivate it. Green tea has been used as traditional medicine in areas such as India, China, Japan and Thailand to help everything from controlling bleeding and helping heal wounds to regulating body temperature, blood sugar and promoting digestion.

The Kissa Yojoki (Book of Tea), written by Zen priest Eisai in 1191, describes how drinking green tea can have a positive effect on the five vital organs, especially the heart. The book discusses tea's medicinal qualities, which include easing the effects of alcohol, acting as a stimulant, curing blotchiness, quenching thirst, eliminating indigestion, curing beriberi disease, preventing fatigue, and improving urinary and brain function. Part One also explains the shapes of tea plants, tea flowers, and tea leaves, and covers how to grow tea plants and process tea leaves. In Part Two, the book discusses the specific dosage and method required for individual physical ailments.

[edit] Unproven claims

Green tea has been credited with providing a wide variety of health benefits, many of which have not been validated by scientific evidence. These claims and any for which academic citations are currently missing are listed here:

* Stopping certain neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.[1]
* The prevention and treatment of cancer [2]
* Treating multiple sclerosis [3]
* Preventing the degradation of cell membranes by neutralizing the spread of free radicals which occur during oxidation process. [4]
* Reducing the negative effects of LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) by lowering levels of triglycerides and increasing the production of HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol).
* Increasing fat oxidation (helps the body use fat as an energy source) and raising metabolism. [5]
* Joy Bauer, a New York City nutritionist, says [the catechins in green tea] increase levels of the metabolism speeding brain chemical norepinephrine.
* Japanese researchers claim that drinking five cups of green tea a day can burn 70 to 80 extra calories. Dr. Nicholas Perricone, an anti-aging specialist, appeared on the Oprah Winfrey show and told Oprah's viewers they can lose 10 lbs (4.5 kg) in 6 weeks drinking green tea instead of coffee.
* Some green tea lovers restrict their intake because of the caffeine it contains — about a quarter the amount as is found in coffee. Too much caffeine can cause nausea, insomnia, or frequent urination. [6]"

The cocktail that I buy is about $2.59 for 1.89L ... and has 70 - 75% less calories and/or sugar than the regular version of same.

"The Health Benefits of Red Tea...
With its many positive attributes, Red Tea is a great choice of drink for health conscious people.

Red Tea contains no artificial colors, additives or preservatives, making it a natural beverage. It contains no caffeine. According to studies conducted in South Africa and Japan Red Tea has been shown to aid in health problems such as insomnia, irritability, headaches, nervous tension, and hypertension.

Studies also show that red tea contains anti-spasmodic agents, which can relieve stomach cramping and colic in infants.

In South Africa Red Tea has been used to treat allergies such as hay fever, asthma and eczema very effectively .

It is also used to treat irritated skin. Red Tea - Rooibos is brewed and placed directly on infected areas. Red Tea contains anti - oxidants which can help slow the aging process and boost the immune system.

Red tea is a great thirst quencher and is an excellent beverage for active people, including children.

This tea contains no oxalic acid, making it a good beverage for people prone to kidney stones. Red Tea contains the minerals, copper, iron and potassium, calcium, fluoride, zinc, manganese, alpha- hydroxy ( for healthy skin ) and magnesium ( for the nervous system ) are also components of this tea. In South Africa pregnant women and nursing mothers drink Red Tea because it contains no caffeine."

I've been drinking one to two cups of Green Tea with a tea spoon of honey every night before bed,
and I have effectively cut the common cold from 3 times a year to
1 in the last year...and even then the cold didn't hit me nearly as hard as it used to.

I drink a good litre or two of green tea on weekend nights at work (they have the best stuff there).

Don't remove the tea from the actual teabag.

Simply let it steep for awhile (they recommend 2 - 3 minutes or more). I give it a good 10 + in that I'm making alot of it. Then I simply take a spoon and pinch the teabags on the side of the jug (I place it in a 1L measuring cup :cool::D ) and squeeze out some of the extra goodness (just for kicks).

You guys have to try loose tea leaves sometime, instead of just the bags. You put the loose tea leaves inside this thing called a tea ball (acts as a little filter) very good stuff. The lipton stuff tastes nasty to me. The loose tea leaves is the good shit. If you can find a place that has some good loose tea leaves try it out. Better than the tiny lipton bags

Tetley black tea is great with a little milk. It is much better then liptons. As for green tea try lipton grean tea with honey. It has orange peals and camamile. It really puts you to sleep. Its wierd cuz I am usually very sensitive to caffine but when i drink the liptons grean tea i immediately get sleepy.

For the cats really into REAL tea no in a bag for jug from the store. Check this site out http://www.adagio.com. I just got my shorty some the single cup tea pot and two different samplers cost 33 bucks total. She loves the citron.

No doubt. I need to get one of them tea ball (filter)-type joints.

2 residents at one of my sites have 'em (really healthy cats 23 and 26yo in age apiece) and really enjoy it.

Never been a big tea person, but I was sick last week with a helluva sore throat and my peoples made me drink tea. They started me with white and green since I'm not a big tea person. So I had a cup of green or white, with lemon squeezed in and some honey and it really made my throat feel better. And the taste wasn't as strong as like black or orange tea... so I guess I have to rethink my assumptions on tea since I'm all better now!

Right on, Cleo'.

Glad your experience went well. And just remember ... WATER + TEA = the 2 most widely-consumed liquids/beverages THE WORLD OVER.

Billions of people can't be wrong.

I'm gonna look into that Stevia it sounds pretty good!!

i get a box of 100 packets from the health food store.
cost about $12
that one box last me 4-5 months.

they dont lie when they say its wayyyyyy sweeter than table sugar.
i can use one packet on 3 big bowls of oatmeal.
i use it in moderation.

a small pinch of stevia can really sweeting some shit up.
dont taste like table sugar....kinda bitter tasting.
but ive gotten use to it.

as far as my green tea...i mostly drink it plan.
warm - room temperature
