I just relocated to a new city, and I'm about to start looking at fitness centers to join. In the past couple of years Ive been with the YMCA. I'm thinking I might want to change up this time around. My choices for this location are; la fitness, bally's total fitness, planet fitness, ymca, and golds gym. I know it's a matter of personal preference, but I would like to know some pro's/con's for those of you that are familiar with these places before I go and get the sales pitches.

From personal experience, I would say you probably want to stay away from Ballys. That place is like a club with workout equipment. There is far too much socializing going on. BTW...their contracts are UNBREAKABLE. I swear, they are written in blood.

i dont find the socializing issue at my bally's, but their equipment is pretty out dated.. their weight room is outdated and too fucking small

i also cant wait till my contract runs out, this march if i remember correctly.

i go to the one on 50th between 8th and 9th in manhattan

i had a membership with planet fitness. $10 dollars a month aint a bad deal. i went to the one in yonkers for a few months with my girl mainly for cardio.

with planet fitness its all about the basics with no frills. most of their equipment is stupid. but for the price you have access to dumbbells, standard presses, cardio equipment. now that fucking place was too social for my tastes.

i went to golds gym for 1 year a long time ago. way too many homos in the 54th street location. come to find out the residents in that area are all gay. needless to say i never went back.

I was with Bally's back in 2000 when I was still in school. It wasn't bad but I wouldn't recommend it, for the same reasons the other poster mentioned, the contract. You have to be disabled or 30+ miles from the closest Bally's before they'd even consider letting you out of it.

I don't have much experience with the other gyms you mentioned, I'm with 24HR Fitness. But make Bally's your plan Z.

I pay by the year and am able to go to any ballys. We got one here in beachwood that has everything, and others like some have said that dont.

I have had many clients complain about the conracts, bally going into their bank account even when they are trying to break free.

The social part aint a problem, let muthafuckas know you want to get your work out on and thats that. But the contract and the upselling should be watched.

They are there to sell, sell, sell, sell.

i've gone to planet fitness. there are a ton of rules @ those places(no grunting, no dropping weights, etc....). the price is really good($10.00 a month). i don't think that there is a contract either. i'm not sure if there is one in your area, but i got to omni fitness and i love it. it stays open until 10:00p.m. there are a ton of classes. the place isn't crowded during peak times. the price isn't bad($35.00 a month). i know that they have them in alot of major metro areas as well.

I'm at Bally's now, and have been for years. Once your contract is over after that 3 years, your rate goes down significally. I pay $8 a month now, while everyone else I know is paying $40-$70. Plus being able to travel throughout the country and visit different Bally's.

If it's a lot of socializing, you don't have to partake in it.

The only problem I have with it, is that I wish it were 24 hours.

Just make sure you know what you're signing and make sure you're going to go.

I stay away from Bally's for the sole reason that, most if not all Bally's DB's goto 80 lbs max :smh::smh::smh:. I do shoulder presses warm up with 85's.......... I would go with the YMCA, they are the only spot in my area that still have 100 lb plates :yes::yes:

If you travel between Boston, Philly, NY,NJ, and DC, I would say NewYorkSportsCub. There are so many, that you can work out anywhere if you get the platinum membership. 24HR gyms are also solid, not alot of equipment, but good free-weights, and open all night The YMCA is still a very good option in NY. The one's in BK and Queens are very good, and you get a good deal to work out at national Y's. Bally's was played out in the early 90's. As far as the "Fag Factor", can't get away from that in sports clubs around the city, that's where them mofo's hang. Just workout and keep it movin...............

Depends, the one I go to has 100 DB's, but I have seen Bally's with a bunch of cardio equipment, and not many free weights
