Can anyone suggest any type of healthy beverages. Got the wife and kids eating healthy, and working out (wife is trying to lose a few, I'm trying to gain). But when I shop for groceries I dont really have an idea of what type of healthy drinks to look out for.

I usually hit up the Juice section and pick up a lot of the 100% juices, but all that stuff is pretty much from concentrate so I dont know exactly how healthy that is (plus it be having my daughter bouncing off the walls so I'm sure it has some sugar in there).

PS
I'm looking for something good to drink, not no fucking V8, lol! I'm pretty much replacing Arizona Ice Tea, Pepsi, and Kool Aid. So an easy transition would be preferred. Thanks

Those juices on the shelves are not good. They have concentrated white grape juice and are pasturized and from concentrate. Arizona Iced tea full of high fructose corn syrup.

I never really see any healthy drinks in the regular supermarket except for juices in the fridge like pom and the organic ones like the boathouse farms and odwalla and stuff but they are expensive.

I buy herbal tea and make gallons of iced tea and sweeten with a lil honey.

Also some perrier or pellegrino with a splash of pom is a good soda substitute.

Apple cider is good.

I have made fruit punch for kids with apple cider, orange juice, pineapple juice and cranberry juice. They like that with the sparkling water too.

The vitamin waters and fruit waters aren't too bad either.

- H20 is boring + everyone's best friend.

- Green tea (look for authentic brands - and those with MATCHA (POWDER) + ROASTED BROWN RICE)

- Vegetable Cocktail - any of the LOW SODIUM versions (far healthier than the big name, namebrand joints. Some have more vegetable content & 75% less sodium)

- Unsweetened orange juice from concentrate (water it down too)

- Cranberry juice ... healthier versions of it ... the ones with less sugar/caloric count(s). If you find it too sweet (or know it is) ... again, water it down. Or for variety ... I like to go 50/50 on cranberry + orange juices mixed together

- Blueberry/pomegranate juice

- Grapefruit juice (healthier versions of it ... again ... water it down)

Great point, Triple B'.

And for those who are drinking the brands of cranberry juice which happen to be HIGHER in caloric intake or that substitute in Sucralose or whatever the hell ... like I said earlier ... just WATER IT DOWN A LITTLE BIT AS YOU WOULD YOUR ORANGE JUICE. There's no harm in:

1) Making your juices last longer
2) Cutting back on the "sugar"-y type of kick

Thanks, bro. Yeah ... I can't stand it at work (and with fam' in general) when people keep their juices from concentrate still quite concentrated. Shit's like light syrup. I always add an extra 350 - 700ml to extend the life of the container ... and also to do a fave to those drinking it (DIABETES is a muthafucka in the health care field ... especially with the mentally ill and medication intake / sedentary lifestyles / caloric intake / weight gain / poor dietary choices for MANY years prior to proper food/nutrition intake in licensed care settings with VERY HEALTHY meal plans and menus).

I talked to a couple of cats and asked them about their average food intake in decades prior when living in other settings. Some noted daily spaghetti, macaroni, and hamburgers as the norm. One guy noted "I lived off of 3 cans of Campbell's soup and 3 cans of Coke everyday for about 10 years ... by choice ..." - sodium and sugar much  ??

Nowadays we've got menu plans which involve all of the following types of foods and groups with well-structured meal plan times. And it's great to see weight levels maintained ... consistent vital signs and the overweight/obese losing weight at a HEALTHY RATE (for example: 50 lbs over the course of 2 - 3 years) ------>

8am = breakfast (balanced meal)
10am = fruit snack (banana/orange/pear = fave choices stock-wise. Banana = most often chosen)
12pm = lunch (balanced meal)
2:30pm = coffee/fruit snack (banana/coffee OR orange/coffee = faves)
5pm = supper (balanced meal)
8pm = light snack (served with 4oz of juice or milk)

~ Regular tea is available from 8am - 5pm. From 5pm on ... decaf' tea only.

FOODS CONSUMED throughout the year:

- Whole grain breads of all types. Flax / 12-Grain / Gluten-Free / many others
- Unsweetened juices
- TONS of tea (green + regular / normal + decaf')
- 1% milk
- Healthy cereals
- Tons of fresh fruits and vegetables
- Salads at least 4 - 5 nights weekly
- LEAN meats
- Lots of CHICKEN + FISH dishes
- Lots of BAKED/STEAMED/ROASTED items
- Nothing fried
- Long-grain / brown / Jasmine / Basmati rice
- Lots of salmon, tuna, cod
- Casseroles / kick-ass healthy chili
- Chicken cacciatore / baked chicken breast / chicken curry / chicken stir-fry with TONS of vegetables
- Snacks which vary from whole grain crackers and low-fat cheese to low-fat yogurt, green tea ice cream, low-fat/sugar frozen yogurt, homemade muffins, fresh fruit cocktail (not the canned garbage)
- Limited carbs / starches ... low-fat dairy ... PLENTY of veggies and fruits ... plenty of liquids/fluids to aid with digestion and regularity (far too much constipation in the health care field too ... due to medication side effects ... lack of fluid consumption ... general inactivity)

Invest in a good Juicer (approx. $99) and juice every fruit (except bananas and avocados...too much pulp) and vegetable you can find. Save the pulp for making soups, gravies and cakes/pastries such as carrot cake etc. For the best results juices must be consumed no more than 15-20 minutes after being prepared.

You're welcome, bro. Yeah ... it's a good way to 'stretch' the concentrate, but also to make it "more healthy" in a way. Considering water's forever going to be the #1 beverage requirement for EVERYONE the world over ... a little more of it here and there doesn't hurt.

At work we've got 2 Type II diabetics (possibly three individuals even) ... and I'm forever baffled when costaff prepare unsweetened juices (still fairly sweet though, it seems) and don't water them down.

The can will call for 3 cans of water. They'll put in 2 - 2.5. And it pisses me off when they buy the crappy SUGARY juices from concentrate which cost more, are less healthy and still DON'T water them muthafuckas down. I look at them like ... "we're trying to help the people we have here, right? Not add to their daily glycemic intake/index ...":rolleyes:

Sounds good, bro. A juicer is potentially my next investment. At the moment I'm having alot of fun making some good-ass smoothies with the blender I picked up a month ago pre-Christmas. Packing that thing full of bananas, oranges, peaches, grapes, strawberries, raspberries and blueberries and mixing it with grains/oats/cranberry juice/low-fat soy ... and getting my "nearly-guilt-free" drink on.

Well here's the thing H-funk you can get a culture and make it yourself very cheap. I have bought it at the Whole Foods for close to 2 a bottle, but I'm not convinced that its properties are superior than say something like apple cider vinegar. Kombucha tastes wayyyy better though.

A little bit of fermented food has its place in a healthy diet- just not sure kombucha is worth the expense or trouble. That's why I was curious if anyone else consumed it and found it particularly beneficial.

Thanks for the links H-funk

I do my fermented foods in the form of miso mostly.

I have heard the wonder stories about the kombucha but couldn't ever quite get a taste for it. Umeboshi plum although not a drink is a great way to bring that fermented super healing vibe into your diet. I am big on the miso too. Tempeh as well.

As for the thread topic, another drink that supposedly cures and prevents any and everything but tastes fucking disgusting is noni juice.

Absolutely ... and the best thing about it is that there's alot of suggestions and questions floating around so soon too. It'll be a great resource for us all.

There were some health/wellness threads on BGOL ... it's just tricky to keep them updated/current in that the main board is so popular and busy with threads. I wanna see if the mods can help move Gemini's great SURPRISE INGREDIENTS IN FAST FOOD thread from over there to here too. Solid thread for months in 2007 on the main board ^

Benefits Of Coconut Water
The Fluid Of Life - Drinking Young Coconut Water
Coconut water is the liquid found inside young coconuts which has a natural balance of sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium making it a healthy electrolyte drink. It is low in fat and calories and contains no cholesterol. This natural isotonic beverage has the same level of electrolytic balance as we have in our blood and has been used intravenously to stabilize electrolytes. Coconut Water is ideally the fluid of life, so to speak.

The coconut itself is a natural water filter that takes almost 9 months to filter each litre of water. The water travels through many fibers being purified where it is stored away Sterile in the nut itself. Coconut water is a universal donor being identical to human blood plasma. Plasma makes up 55% of human blood. By drinking coconuts it is like were giving ourselves an instant blood transfusion. Coconut water is an excellent blood plasma substitute because it is sterile, does not produce heat, and does not destroy red blood cells and is readily accepted by the body. It has also been used to save lives in 3rd world countries by the coconut IV.

During 1941- 1945 in the Pacific War both conflicting parties regularly siphoned coconut water directly from the nut to give emergency plasma transfusions to injured soldiers.

Coconut water now joins the pantry's medicine cabinet. Coconuts are anti-viral, anti-fungal and anti-microbial. The lauric acid in coconuts is also used to heal digestive tract disorders such as Leaky Gut Syndrome.

According to ayurvedic belief, coconut is carminative: meaning that it helps to prevent intestinal gas, aids in removing toxins and increases the digestive tract's ability to absorb nutrients. Coconut balances acid levels and flushes toxins out. Ayurveda considers coconut a natural stress-buster.

The calming, cooling benefits of coconut water relieves burning sensations and hot flushes and "restores emotional stability in menopausal women". Keeping the body cool and its proper temperature (directly after consumption you might notice this). This property of coconut water also makes it an excellent choice for liver problems, hepatitis or inflammation.

Since it regulates the functioning of the intestine, the coconut water propitiates to the user a smoother and pretty skin. Coconut water can also be used directly on the face, for skin hydration. Coconut water has been used for re-hydration and as a health and beauty aide in tropical regions around the world for centuries.

More Coconut Water Health Benefits at a Glance:

Low in Carbohydrates
99% Fat Free - Contains No Cholesterol
Low in natural occurring sugar
Contains organic compounds possessing growth promoting properties
Cures Malnourishment
Effective in the treatment of kidney and urethral Stones

Natural drink for feeding infants suffering from intestinal disturbances
Excellent oral re-hydration medium, an all natural isotonic for all ages
Re-hydrate naturally, free of added sugars or chemicals
More hydrating to the body then water
Lower arterial pressure
Relieve spasms and stomach pain
Ease burns
Natural diuretic

Presence of saline and albumen makes it an excellent drink in cholera cases
Maintains the human body's natural fluid levels
Can be injected intravenously in emergency cases
Helps in carrying nutrients and oxygen to cells
Eliminate swelling in hands and feet

Normalize the intestinal function and raise metabolism
Heal damage induced by antibiotics and toxins in the digestive tract
Boost poor circulation
Coconut Water is said to be more Nutritious than whole milk because it does contain less fat and no cholesterol. Also healthier than orange juice containing much lower calories. It contains lauric acid which is present in human mother's milk making it a better alternative to processed baby milk. When coconut water is exposed to air, the liquid rapidly loses most of its organoleptic and nutritional characteristics, and begins to ferment. So it is best consumed as soon as you open the young coconut.

A young coconut has different properties than a mature coconut and has not fully reached its maturity. Young coconut meat is softer and more like gelatin and contains approximately 1-2 cups of coconut water (not to be confused with coconut milk) in each young coconut.

Coconut Water - A Natural Energy Drink
"Coconut water is the very stuff of Nature, biologically Pure, full of Natural Sugars, Salts, and Vitamins to ward off fatigue and is the next wave of energy drinks but natural", according to Mortin Satin, Chief of the United Nation's Food & Agriculture Organization.

Coconut water contains more potassium (at about 294 mg) than most sports drinks (117 mg) and most energy drinks. Even more than a banana! It has less sodium (25mg) where sports drinks have around 41mg and energy drinks have about 200 mg.

Coconut water has 5mg of Natural Sugars where sports and energy drinks range from 10-25mg of Altered Sugars.

Coconut water is very high in Chloride at 118mg, compared to sports drinks at about 39mg. (Note-Data is based on a 100ml drink)

It is a delicious refreshing and most importantly healthy alternative to popular electrolyte energy sports drinks found today in supermarkets. It's high in electrolytes and potassium with fewer calories and no artificial additives. 8 oz of Gatorade has 63 calories while the same serving of coconut water has just 46 calories.

Many professional sports people are replacing there conventional sports drinks and drinking coconut water before and after their physical activities or sports to keep there body hydrated. Coconut water is actually more hydrating to the body then water and when your body's properly hydrated you should get an incredible energy buzz! It's a excellent all natural water to drink while Relaxing, Meditating, Driving, Eating, Running, Aerobics, Working, Skiing, Mountain Biking, Exercising, Body Building, Surfing, Fishing, Snow Boarding, Working Out, Surfing, Physical Activities, or Exertion of any kind.

Instead of throwing away the young coconut meat it's great to use on breakfasts, salads or even blended into the coconut water with added blueberries for some antioxidants to make a smoothie. It is full of essential fatty acids and has an amazing ability to rejuvenate the skin and body by restoring oxidative tissue damage. It also can aid in increasing sexual health and potency.

H2O is the best, get if from your tap.
Skim Milk
Carbonated water if you don't like plain water.
Add a slice of lemon to your water.

If you want to kill yourself, try Rum and Coke.

As far as juice is concerned, eating the fruit (vegetable) itself is usually healthier. Instead of orange, grapefruit, celery, tomato, or carrot juice; eat the food.

I buy a cranberry-cocktail which is a Blue Menu healthy/healthier choice with heavily REDUCED sugar/sucralose + caloric content.

Realistically though ... I wish I could just easily find/buy cranberry juice straight ... no additives, and water it down myself (and know that I'm being healthiest). I need to get rid of all this sucralose-type shit from my diet/life.

i need to go in that direction myself. i was informed recently by heli-copterfunk about some nutritious veggie shakes that you can make on your own. i cannot remember the recipes he gave me. try to PM him for that info, as he seems like a good brotha and will help you out there.

Brother K',

I haven't had a chance to try out any veggie smoothies yet. I will eventually ... for the time being (past 2 months especially) I've just gotten myself into the routine of having about 3 days a week where I prep up a FRUIT SMOOTHIE. Here's some general tips on making a good one, bro ------>

- No water / milk / ice cubes needed (IF you use the frozen fruit as it'll ask as your cold/cooling agent). Otherwise ... use some ice cubes

- 2 cups of fresh fruit. Or try picking up a large frozen bag of FRUIT MEDLEY. The one I pick up is 2.75KG (peaches / pineapple / cherries / blueberries / strawberries / grapes)

- 1 to 2 cups of low-fat Soy

- 2 bananas diced up

- 1 orange diced up (if you're into making the smoothie a bit thicker/pulpier in nature)

- A dash of cranberry juice and/or low-fat, healthy yogurt

- And I enjoy adding some grains to the mix to be adventurous (note - BIGIRL mentioned it isn't too wise to combine fruits/grains together ... as per SEXY's thread about healthy eating + BLOATING - http://www.bgol.us/board/showthread.php?t=235026 ) I add about a 1/2 to 1 cup serving of HEALTH OATS or 7-GRAIN CEREAL (which consists of rye, bran, flax, quinoa, whole wheat, etc). Stuff like that.

Those smoothie combinations you mentioned sounded great, IZ' ^

Have you commenced with any of them yet?

Quick question - how common and readily/easily available is KALE in-store? I never spot it when I'm out shopping. Is it affordable?
