You're 25 and you want to go to medical school. Yet, you're considering fucking off another four years in the Army.
Do I have that correct?:lol::lol: :hmm:

Don't go he army route. My cousin is a Captain, (obgyn) in the army. His pay is a lot less than in private practice. Go specialize in cosmetic surgery or something like Bariatric surgery, that's where the money is.

You need to at least finish Pre-Med First
All entering the Navy will do is make you a physician assistant which pays nicely on the outside. You will not be rich,But you would Not be broke.

Patients in the ER will even call you doctor 'cause they do not know the Differents. But you are NOT a Doctor, you would be working Under a Doctor.
Also PA's can Never act as a anesthesiologist like a RN can.

You do know that anesthesiologist is one of the hard specialty's to get into - like Orthopedics, Plastic Surgeon.

A lot of loans for that field. What about becoming a nurse. 2 year accelerated program, NCLEX exam. Set for life.

SAD FACTS -black docs dont make that much cash, insurence blacks go to white docs, black MDs get medicaid scraps.anesthesia is good because you can get a salery and you dont have to build a practice, understand that the cost in time and student loans are high and your people probably wont support you, you'll have to fund your own retirement. I have done ok but here in MS the white docs in small towns are hostile to blacks, that helps me get patients, when i deliver babies I still hear BLACKS SAY OH THE BABY IS SO LIGHT ITS SO PRETTY ,folks self hate runs deep in our culture and other people notice,i have seen black people go to docs that are known to be incompetent but go because they are white I also notice the type of women featured on this board[light bright damm near white with hair like the lord].Ihave come to the conclusion that we are where we are because we are stupid

I'm in the medical field

If you have the time be a doctor more options more money and respect.

Everyone else in the medical field works for the doctor.

Nurse,PT,RT,CRNA,PA all work for the DOCTORS

If u wanna take a shortcut the Nurse and PA are your best options around 70k to 100k a year but you will work your ass off.PA do what doctors dont wanna do that is why it called assistant LOL!!

CRNA is good money still report to a doctor though.

I prefer the autonomy of being a doctor or dentist. be a doctor!!

Im in Med school now. honestly.....if you already have a college level degree the best route would be to get into a post bacc program. There are alot out there. Two that come to mind are one at Southern Illinois University and one at Temple University. They are really good at getting you into med school and you get ALOT of networking done.

As far as getting into school. work on your reasoning skills and the most important thing right now for you is to READ!!! ALOT!!! Im talkin about everything from Medical journals/Physio books to reputable newspapers. Reading is a very intricate skill in med school.

If you have some more specific questions I can help. Just ask.... well...... back to studying (after this beach volleyball match:yes:)

Im 24, turning 25 this year, and am supposed to start LVN school in September. I also wanted to be a CRNA, but like everyone said, getting into a CRNA program is no joke, I think there were only 2-3 CRNA programs in all of CA, one of them was at USC.

Im in the same position as you, hated my job, am 2 years away from getting my Bachelors in Marketing, but decided to go do the medical thing. Mostly because most of my boys with their BA's arent doing too great, while everyone in the medical field is doing good. Also, I plan on moving out of CA, and would imagine I can find a job real fast in the medical field wherever I go. And the schedule of a nurse would be real dope if I want to keep going to school while working.

Finding an RN program without a 2-3 year waitlist was too hard, so im going to LVN school (18k, 15 months), and plan on going to RN school (60k, 18 months) immediately after I finish, dont even plan on working as an LVN.

Once I get my ADN RN (associates RN), ill prob work for a year or two, then do the ADN RN - RN BSN program, and then figure out what to do from there.

I wouldn't advise the millitary, I was considering that route and what I found out is that you can serve 2 weekends a month while in school. Which is not bad...the thing that they dont' tell you is that when you go for those two days you don't come back home until your job is completed. Two days can turn into a month or 6 months or even longer. Just stay in school and do what you want to do. I am pursuing a career in medicine, I know how it is...just keep your head in your books concentrate on getting your GPA as close to 4.0 as you can....and don't worry about the millitary....

First of all, if you're looking for a "Quick Fix" you're not cut out to be a Physician. Med School is long, tedious and hard. You have to go in knowing that you want to do this. Because I can tell you, you will not have any friends for a very long time, You will not have sex for a year during your first year of residency and you will have to go into the hospital no matter how shitty you feel as a part of the "Orientation" as a first year resident.

If you want to go military, You need to go to Military Medical school which is weird IMO because they train you faster and the focus is on war like injuries. After that 4 year period obtaining your MD or DO, they will probably try to convince you to do your Residency in Emergency Medicine.

get your bs in bio or chem - go to med school - get the military to pay for your school (you owe them a yr of service for every year they pay for) or promise to go work in underprivileged areas and get your loans paid off - u gotta put in 2 yrs(different programs are available)

I shadowed before my first year in Medical school, I asked my family physician if he knew any Psychiatrists who would allow me to shadow. He introduced me to a friend of his he attended Med school with who is a practicing Psychiatrist. It was history from there...It's funny because it's like some sort of club, they interview you as to why you want to shadow them and why you want to go to Med school etc. It's an interesting experience.

what do u mean set for life?

I mean you will always have a job. Check career builder, Monster etc..tons of opportunities for nurses and I don't mean just doing hospital shit either. There is a huge demand for them. Many jobs will help pay for your loans off.

Don't talk anymore You can't spell. You punctuate like shit and you use dumb shit phrases like "light, bright, damn near white with hair like the lord".

You go to the same med school as "Granny" from the Beverly Hillbillies mixing possum greens in the babies formula and shit.

You can try a FOREIGN medical school, most Americans don't know that it's a "BACKDOOR" way of getting a medical degree. Why?
Less emphasis on grades/MCAT scores
More focus on how well you do IN med school not before
Cheaper than US med schools

Does it mean you'll be a good doctor?
Well, you still have to pass the USMLE and you have to do a residency in the US

So if you pass the US test, you're a qualified doctor

More info on going to foreign med schools can be found at http://digg.com/educational/Applying_to_foreign_medical_schools

HMO hospitals in California pay P200K minimum per year so no worries on the med school bills

I support you, bro! A man can't get enough education. Don't get discouraged and follow your dreams, bro. You're never too old or too young or too broke. If you have fire in the belly, you'll find a way.

Try ROTC...they pay for your schooling, when you graduate you're an officer and you can continue to go to school FREE. I have a friend who got his medical degree this way, he's still in the Air Force and doing well.

You owe the service a committment for paying for your school, but it's a good way to go, plus your insurance won't be so high. Anesthesiologist pay rediculously high insurance rates, the militar will shield you from this. Get a paycheck immediately, build tenure and years toward retirement. You can retire at 45, have no student loans and a retirement check upwards of $3,000-$4,000 a month for life...not a bad deal.

ROTC is an excellent program...hindsight is 20/20 because this is the route I would have went.

a p.a is cool, but it's just a glorified nurse. if you want the respect and the pay that comes wth it you should be a specialist. but lol @ you making med school seem easy.

Nah, man, just showing support to a bruh who wants to enter the field. I know it's hard but fam need support too. Believe it so you can achieve it, as my grandpops used to always say.

Nursing is super quick to get into. A P.A is alittle bit more difficult as stated before; you're a doctor without the pay. To me the medical field is congested. When I started out a P.A was 100even, now it's 55-65. But I guess that's okay

Yeah it really depends on what specialty you're going for. What do you want to specialize in? The best way to do it is when they are doing hospital rounds or on call. That way it's not awkward and you're not left out in the lobby when they are seeing patients. They will show you around the hospital and how things are. With all the malpractice claims nowdays it may be tougher to find a Physician willing to let you do this rather than 10 years ago when I was just starting med school.

yo is med school really that bad??

u said you wont have sex for a yr.. wtf? sure its a lot of studying but there has to be plenty free time..or atleast considerable free time to do things...no?..ofcourse its not gonna be no going out every weekend..but you make it seem like your life stops when you get into med school..

i gotta question though about residency. how crazy is it?. stupid hard, too many work hours?. did you have any struggles with it?

Med school is hard but manageable. I'm talking about Residency, specifically 1rst year residency. You will not have time, that is when you're on call and working 80-90 hours a week. The only people you hang out with are fellow residents and patients. Who you going to fuck other than other residents and even then you'll be disturbed in the middle of scrub sex because you're paged. But forget about that, you just want to sleep for 10 mins if you can. You will not think about sex, you will not even be able to think about anything but work. I did a 1 years residency in Internal Medicine and finished up in Psychiatry. Internal Medicine is NO JOKE during PGY1. All Residents will struggle to the point of questioning why the hell did you choose to go this route, it gets easier during your 3rds and 4th year.

whats the base rate like for someone in your field coming straight outta residency..?

oh yeah i heard they rape your guys in residency earning like 11 bucks an hour type equivalent..lol. how much did they give u? and was it hard to maintain with that..?

200-220k per year for Psychiatry starting out. As a resident we make around 35 grand per year:smh::smh::smh:. It sucks but you manage because you live in a cheap apt. With roommates.

what age did you finish the whole shebang? . did you or do you feel like you missed out on the best years of your life..the 20s being consumed with your schooling.? or is it all good>?

thats my whole thing with the med school thing. quite a few ppl do it because of the pay more so than the whole "helping ppl" thing. but they could probably get paid just as much as a doctor doing soemthing else instead of spending that many yrs of their life just so that they could get the high check. what gives?

I just finished not that long ago at 29. I didn't miss out on too much because I did my undergrad at FAMU :D . You have to want to help people, you may start off talking about money stuff but if you're not about helping people then you'll end up dropping out or being a shitty doctor with Malpractice claims and no practice.
