20 years ago today, Lil Romeo released his album “Game Time” under No Limit Records. It sold 93,000 physical copies first week

93k was not good numbers pre-streaming. That was considered a flop.
Back then he made bank with those numbers especially being a kid rapper.

So, that's nothing to sneeze at.

Ain't no kid rapper or grown man can make those numbers in their first week.

Niggas get 93k views and swear they famous or making money but still broke AF trying to sell their album.

Bullshit, it takes 1500 streams to equal one sale. 93000 x 1500 = 139.5 million streams in a week to hit this number.
93k first week? That’s far from a flop. Homie probably went gold after a few months

93k would be good numbers today but in 2002 that was a flop by industry standards especially as a follow up to a more successful debut album.

This album never even went gold.

Here is Guerilla Black explaining a little bit.

Actually, it's not that good today because of streaming. Lil Baby was doing 90000 a week 10 years ago and he was a hit. Now he's doing 200,000k his first week. Those are streaming numbers. Who's doing 135 million streams first week? Beyonce, Adele and Rhi Rhi maybe.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

People basing their standard on views ands streams and it should be the other way around.

93k is a flop. Don't let these inflated numbers you hear in today's context fool you. The reason why streams and views sound like huge numbers to you now is because you're comparing them to the numbers of old.

Shouldn't that tell you something?

93k was def a flop back then

Ashanti album sold 503,000 copies the first week just for some prospective on how much physical music was selling back in the day.

Crazy part I think I had the physical copies of 6 of these albums.

Going Gold the first week is not the norm. Ashanti was one of the top female R&B artist at that time. Romeo wasn’t top anything. Perspective matters. 93k is a flop for a top artist, but for a pre-teen rapper, how much were y’all expecting him to sell. His first album did 99k first week and eventually went Gold. Follow up album did 93k. For his scope of the Rap genre, he did well.

Also, Master P had that crazy distribution deal. So selling 300k on No Limit Records would put solid money in your pocket, especially if the CEO is your pops

So Jay Z, Beyonce, Kanye, R Kelly, and every other artist flopped in 2002?

:cmonson:

93k in the first week is horrible , local rappers were doing those numbers. Your first 3-4 weeks of sales are your strongest and then they sharply drop off. Projections would have him short of going gold which was not good when all you had were physical albums to go on. for a pop artist like Romeo this is terrible, for somebody selling independent this is great.

No I'm not saying that stop that bro

You know me.

I'm taking the extreme to just illustrate how much the music industry is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT NOW.

This generation cannot understand the numbers back then at all.

But speaking specifically on Romeo...

Because of the label, his dad, the industry at the time, bring independent the youth Market 106 and park radio, video etc etc...

I could understand that his debut album first week numbers were not insane

Bot damn near 100k first week PHYSICAL? has never been will never be a flop

But disappointing under performing? Yeah I could see it all things considered.

Bullshit, Lil Romeo was #2 on the Bill Board 200 with that release.

I don't if the op did this to diss Romeo

If he did? This was the worst way to do it.

That young men did his numbers in a very difficult highly competitive market

Independent

When his label was going through a huge readjustment.

No limit only released THREE projects that year.

Romeo was in the ring tone/start of internet fame era. He was number 1 on 106 & park for weeks, his father was spending on endless promotion.
93k does not live up to all that

established artist like Nas and Snoop push 150k their first week.

Although established, this was very much a low point considering their previous success. These were without a doubt disappointing numbers as such Romeo's numbers.
