The Web giant has greenlit a new original docuseries called American Playboy: The Hugh Hefner Story, which will, according toAmazon, "tell the story of Playboy magazine's charismatic founder … and his impact on global culture and history" through archival footage, interviews, and "cinematic reenactments."
The 13-episode season is slated to premiere on Amazon Video at some point next year. It will be available for viewers in the US, UK, Germany, Austria, and Japan.
Produced by Stephen David Entertainment (the NYC studio behind docu-drama franchiseThe Making of the Mob) and Playboy's own Alta Loma Entertainment, the show "begins in post-war America and takes us through the launch of Playboy magazine in 1953 and the next six decades of Hefner's life and career," according to Amazon's announcement. The show's producers will draw from more than 17,000 hours of never-before-seen archival footage and more than 2,600 of Hefner's personal scrapbooks.
Amazon says Hefner himself has been "deeply involved" in the show's development and production, "imbuing the series with rich first-person accounts and never-before-told stories." In a statement, Hefner said he journeyed a "long road" trying to find the right partners to tell his story.
"I believe we have found them in the collaborative team of Stephen David Entertainment and Amazon," Hefner said. "I'm pleased that this docuseries will shed light on what has been an incredible journey and the voice Playboy has had in the discussion of our ever-changing culture. Just as importantly, my hope is that it will inspire others to pursue their dreams."
