Ashanti’s mother Tina Douglas was a former dance teacher and her father, Ken-Kaide Thomas Douglas was a former singer. Her mother named her after Ashanti Empire (Asante), Ghana (listen). In 2003, Ashanti released her first debut song, “Foolish”, which contains a sample of the song “Stay with me” by DeBarge and “One More Chance” by Big L, which was her biggest success till date. To have their first three chart entries in the top ten of the hot 100 she became the second artist after Beatles. In April 2002, she self-titled her album as “Ashanti”, which was released on Irv Gotti’s Murder Inc. Records which was debuted at number one on the United States Billboard 200 albums chart.
