What's the furthest you ever been behind on taxes?
Did you seek professional help or handle it on your own?
What advice would you give for someone a couple years behind on taxes?

Any tax pros on the board?

Male payment arrangements at the lowest amount possible. Fix your deductions (W4) so they are withholding the max every pay period. Maintain your payments and they will capture your refund for a couple of years and that should get you back on track.

Got 10% being taken out of my shit now, for some taxes the state said I didnt file back in 2010. Of course I couldnt find my info. Thats on me, but I always got something back from the state, so I know I filed. Just couldnt prove it. And when you call youre transfered 15 fucking times, and placed on hold 2 goddamn hours. They make it so you say fuck it Ill call another time. Then fast forward a few months and you get some shit at work saying the state is garnishing your wages. Mofos even took my federal. I wasnt go do shit with it, but buy some shit I didnt need, but still...

Call up the IRS they are actually helpful, if you are behind on taxes let them know what's up and they will work something out for you.

Not sure of the cost but if you can afford it wouldn't hiring a CPA to address the issues be the best way to go?

Back in 2009 I got a call from my payroll office telling me they got a request to garnish my check. She told me you got 2 days to fix it. Went to the IRS Office here in Birmingham and they wouldn't do a payment plan till I filed for 3 years I didn't file. Went home hit BGOL downloaded old versions of Turbotax filled em out and printed them that night was back in the office the next day. Got payment arrangement. Then had a Tax preparer to amend all the years I owed got a refund and put the rest on Amex and shot them bitches the finger.

Haven't read the whole thread yet, but......

I'm a small business owner and I have a CPA, they do my bookkeeping and taxes evert year for Tha past 3 years. I have yet to pay the IRS since I sought out a CPA, but I plan to (this reminded me that I need to call them and setup a payment plan)

They levied my account in 2013, shit was all bad!

But they (CPA) at very least keep me compliant. They are also very knowledgeable about the laws & practices, they indirectly school me to keeping the brothels & booze off the books

Looking for old versions of turbotax.

I found freetaxusa or some shit but I never heard of them so that's a last resort.

I work as a state and local tax controversy attorney and the best thing to do if you are ever behind is to find out if you are current on all tax filings then ask for a penalty and interest waiver.

So call the IRS and make sure all of your returns are filed, ask for the account transcripts for any periods you have a liability, then send in a written payment plan request and in that envelope include a statement asking for a courtesy penalty and interest waiver for all deficient periods.

Then follow up and send another letter to the IRS asking for the waiver for all periods. They will likely only give you a waiver for the largest deficient period, what you do next is file an appeal and include that request again in your appeal.

Once an IRS Appeals Hearing Officer is assigned your case and they see that you only want a waiver for all periods, they'll do it just to close the case.

You're welcome!
