AMC Entertainment Revenues Drop 4.7 Percent in Q2

Exhibition giant's shares are off in after-hours trading as profit falls by nearly half amid box office slump

The struggling domestic box office pushed AMC Entertainment's revenues down by 4.7 percent in the second quarter and profits plunged, the exhibition giant reported Wednesday.

With the overall box office running roughly seven percent from last year, AMC's profits fell by nearly half. Net earnings were $31.4 million, compared to $61.6 million for the same period last year, and diluted net earnings per share were 32 cents per share compared to 81 cents.

Revenues at the Leawood, Kansas-based movie chain for the three months ending June 30 fell to $726.6 million, compared to $762.7 million over the same period last year. Investors reacted quickly, and AMC stock fell 8.9 percent in early after-hours trading, then rebounded and was off 5.3 percent at $21.30 per share.

Admissions revenues in the quarter were $478.7 million compared to $515.3 million last year, despite an increase in the average ticket price to $9.55.

Food and beverage revenues helped soften the blow of the drop in admissions. They hit $211.6 million, and concessions revenues per patron increased by 4.5 percent to $4.22, representing the highest in the company's history.

Adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, dividends and amortization were $131.8 million, compared with $134.7 million for the quarter a year ago.

Last week the nation's biggest exhibition chain, Regal Entertainment Group, reported total revenue for its second quarter was down by nine percent.

AMC Entertainment is a subsidiary of China's Wanda Group., and operates roughly 5,000 screens at 346 locations in the U.S.

Movies this year sucked. The industry will gain a little ground in the 4th quarter with Hobbit and Hunger games but overall it'll still be down. 2015 will be huge though. The releases will be much better and both AMC and Regal are rolling out luxury recliner seating at a bunch of locations.

If it were not so expensive to go to the movies maybe they would turn a better profit.

I want to see micro business and mom and pop productions via mobile devices to CRUSH both companies.

We are not going to be represented on the screens as we should EVER, I hope they fold, and we begin to split the money amongst ourselves so we can produce, direct, and act our own images.

Every time I go to the movies I ask myself why did I do it. The movie going experience itself isn't that great. Tomorrow when I'm watching the James Brown movie and someone behind me is coughing the whole fucking time I'll again ask myself, "why am I hear?"

patience and internet has made movie going pretty much useless unless free tix are giving..throw in the fact hollywood puts more energy into selling trailers than actually making good movies..than throw in the price(nyc is the worst)..chilling comfortable at the crib eating whatever u want and not getting bother by other people makes the home experience that much better

....

I NEED to start making it more of an experience if they want to charge these high prices...

no cell phones, no babies or children after certain times and certain movies.

Better seats with trays and stuff maybe a concession closer to the theater...

better food

intermission maybe?

Security inside the theater to get excessive talking or coughing removed.

I really think that what hurts these theaters is a serious lack of forward thinking for movie formats.

You can't have all these EPIC-ASS films, and show them on a screen about the size of a living room wall. Smaller screen mulitplexes decreased the movie going experience. Making the shit no different than watching any film at home.

If I'm going to see something like a "GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY", I make it a mission to see it on the LARGEST SCREEN POSSIBLE! Not some little-ASS theater.

Theaters and studios during the 80s took the wrong approach in designing new theaters with smaller screens, wanting to show a film on as many screens as possible. Slowly depreciating the movie-going experience.

With directors like Cameron, Nolan, Jackson, Bay, etc., these guys are working with newer film presentation technologies now. They are very aware and demanding better presentation. And most of these theaters aren't equipped.

The movies haven't been that great this year :dunno:

They need to put out more original good content, instead of just sequels and comic book movies.

Yeah, go eat before the movie.

I almost have to make myself go to a movie these days. And when I do im almost always disappointed and leave feelings I wasted my time (not to mention money).

Yea. That shit homie talking is a bargain. I remember about ten years ago was when I realized how much a rip off the movies were. I took a chick to see a flick one night and spent $50. That was the beginning of the end of my routine movie going days.

Yeah man, I like the movie going experience but I can see why others don't like it.

I'm watching the purge anarchy a rated R movie, and they're fuckin kids in that shit :smh:

That's why I hate going the first weekend. Dealing with people who want to talk to the fuckin screen or talk to the person beside them. Then you have people who bring their fuckin babies.

Bullshit like that fucks up the experience for others.

You get shit like that in addition to rising prices.

Which is why when I do go to a movie on opening weekend, I don't ever, ever, ever, ever go at night. I'll catch an early matinee for $6.50 and call it a day. They can have that night shit. I go early and there's usually a handful of people there who are either older or who are like me and just want to watch the movie and not be bothered.

Better yet go at an odd time, on a odd day.

I went to see that haunted house 2 on a Tuesday @ 11 am.

The movie was horrible, but the theater was empty so I ended up getting a quick fuck.

Plus I only payed matinee price for the ticket, so it ended up being a double win

 that's the other trick I used to use when I liked to freak in movie theaters. Nothing like the excitement of getting head in a movie theater then telling ole girl not to move when the dude with the flashlight comes in to check the emergency exits.

Don't forget all the mall cops that harass black men because a white dude shot up a theater. I had one call the SWAT team on me.

I like the experience, I pay for that as much as I'm paying for the movie. I sit my ass right in the middle of that empty theater and it's like having my own shit. I need that movie sound and big screen, and a lot of movies these days are filmed with the mind that it's going to be shown on a large screen.

I wonder how difficult it is to open your own independent theater?

that was only like 4/6 screens but BIG screens and clean, nice stadium seating better food, reasonable concessions, cell phone restrictions, reserved seating and had one screen that would show films that have been out of the theaters for awhile or re-releases (maybe even SELL the blu-rays in the lobby).

Throw 'movie-parties' for kids, sweet 16, birthdays etc. and sold alcohol?

even business events.

And maybe boxing, mma fights, Premier league, Super Bowl....

music concerts?

good idea?

* Definitely recommend all the contesting / sweepstakes websites out there for all the BGOL fam' who love checking out new movies on the big screen. Ya'll have 10 times the population we do in Canada, and way better sweepstakes sites for movie passes to advance screenings & premieres. Been checking out the ones (here in Canada) for many years (late-90s / early-00s) and have won plenty of blu-rays and dvds, and have attended over 100+ movie premieres and such, and shared another 20 - 30+ with friends, family & coworkers when unable to attend. Price is right too ... and you either print off the passes, have them mailed to you by the sponsor(s), pick them up from the newspaper or radio station, or give your name @ the box office. Good shit √

I don't all that it would take. I imagine once you get into NATO you would have a more clear pipeline to distributors where you'd have to make your exhibition deals but everything you described in the bolded is this spot right here in Huntsville, Alabama.

I've been to movie theaters all around the country. This was one of the better ones. Usually independent ones almost always are because they cater to a certain sect like the Alamo Draft House in Texas. This place, the Monaco, has all kinds of events, parties for kids, free summer movies, fights. You can rent out a theater or they have this special area for birthdays. They even had a throwback event last year where they'd show a classic movie like Gladiator of Raiders of the Lost Ark every Thursday night and they'd drop the ticket prices and concessions across the board. My only knock is they haven't gotten into the IMax game yet and one or two of their screens in the smaller theaters need to be maintained better. But it stays packed.
