Black Man of the Day: Bomani Jones Update: Leaving ESPN!

ESPN Radio will likely have a different daily lineup by 2018, three people with knowledge of the situation tell The Big Lead. Unauthorized to speak publicly on the matter, the people requested anonymity.

Clay Travis reported earlier today that Bomani Jones’ show had been dropped by 90 affiliates in the 4-7 p.m. drive-time slot. He also reported that the show was being canceled.

However, my understanding based on speaking to several people independent of each other is that the chain of events was different, and that the end of this show would be a decision initiated by Bomani as opposed to by the company.

There has not yet been a final decision to end the show.

Several weeks ago, Bomani approached ESPN management with the aim of leaving radio to host a daily digital program, feeling that a podcast was better suited for the cultivation of his large social media audience than terrestrial radio.

If, hypothetically, Bomani’s new podcast had synergies with Cycle, the digital ad agency with whom ESPN recently announced a partnership, it could have upside profit potential.

Additionally, Bomani’s television show with Pablo Torre is slated to debut this spring.

An ESPN spokesperson emailed the following statement: “We cannot comment at this time about specifics, but Bomani continues to be an integral part of our audio strategy and is a key player across a wide variety of ESPN platforms.”

As of now, nothing has been finalized in terms of a replacement plan for radio. One potential framework that has been discussed by ESPN is to have Ryen Russillo pair with Will Cain from 4-7 p.m., and potentially extend Stephen A. Smith’s show for another hour.

Currently, Russillo and Stephen A. Smith have solo shows that overlap; Stephen A. is on the main Sirius XM channel and on the New York and Los Angeles affiliates from 1-3 p.m., while Russillo’s show is on most other affiliates from 1-4 p.m. Cain has co-hosted Russillo’s program with relative frequency of late, and the two have good chemistry.

Furthermore, next month will see the end of ESPN Radio’s longtime anchor program Mike & Mike, whose final show together is set for Nov. 17. Mike Greenberg will host a morning program with Michelle Beadle, Jalen Rose, and others beginning next year. Mike Golic will pair on radio with Trey Wingo.

ESPN hasn't been the same since Stuart Scott died, that's the last time I really was eager to watch it. The last straw for me is when Skip Bayless left. First Take is wack as shit with Max Kellerman and Stephan A. Smith. Will Cain is a closet racist and they love letting that idiot talk it's a shame.

Let Bomani do his thing!

^^^

I kinda agree

but I will now officially uninstall the ESPN app

cause that was the ONLY thing I listened to.

I been down with Bomani since the jump

so no matter what he do where he go?
I support.

The radio show was GREAT...

I would LOVE to see the ratings both LIVE and STREAMING.

But he is truly in his element on his own podcast (and I felt he was a little limited by NEVER being able to discuss sports.)

His schedule the last few months has been crazy hectic.

I wish he could have stayed on Lebartard's show instead and later get his OWN once a week show.

But a DAILY digital show?

kind of his OWN version of first take?

could be REALLY good.

I would listen more, but Bomani Jones' show comes on the same time as The Next Level with Emmett Golden & Jerod Cherry for ESPN Cleveland (it's fun/funny as hell if you ain't hip).

Bomani Jones is a good cat. I've listened to him from time to time

I can't stress it enough.....there's no excuse in 2017 for us not to have more black sports radio shows or podcasts. These people on BSPN.......they can do their shit outside of them. Just so much money and so many audiences out there.....I just don't get it. Granted, people who aren't in the mainstream media take these routes.......but the black people in mainstream media won't.

I was thinking...

if I was able to do some type of daily first take type show

for bgol only

I have no idea how I would do this

but like a podcast or streaming show

which was mostly sports but would use the front page of bgol as a rundown

just about 30 mins

would ya'll be interested?

Yeah man.....this shit is needed. We always have to listen to people speaking for us.......who aren't us. Or who are ex-athletes. Nobody that's really out here.

I listen to Bonami's show on podcast semi-regularly, so I'm a fan. However, its clear either Bomani ain't trying to work that hard, or his management team don't give a fuck about the audience he brings, because he is regularly absent and the guest hosts suck. Maybe a podcast is better. They gotta lose at least 75% of the audience whenever they bring in another generic white host. Plus, ESPN fucked up by giving affiliates the option to choose the exact opposite of Bomani, the Paul Feinberg SEC show, during the pm rushhour. They switched out Bomani on ESPN radio for the SEC show in Columbus, Big Ten country, Ohio of all places.

I don't get why you keep saying this.

You keep saying this, but it's about platform and money. They make a damn good living. Is Bo going to get six figures off a podcast? BTW he had a podcast long before he was on ESPN. That tells you something and he knows how podcast work.

Maybe you should listen to Combat Jack talk about how long it took for him to get paid off his podcast

And the audience dilutes your possible listenership. Radio is down overall because alternatives.

That's an excuse to me. It won't be overnight success. But Bomani has a huge headstart.

When O'Reilly got kicked off of fox he ran and started his own platform and his flock ran with him.

This shit is not nearly as hard as y'all make it because people do it. Bomani already had a large fanbase. He has what some podcasters never get.

blah blah

I notice people are always telling people what they should do

Why don't you give up your job and do it

You didn't even know Bomani has been doing a podcast for like seven years. And you're talking about what he should be doing :smh:

Do you even listen to him daily NOW?

O'Reilly got kicked off with millions in the bank. He was making 25+ mil a year. And year he's still trying to get back on TV, but there isn't a big enough vehicle, and the settlement might have been the nail in his coffin.

So again, why don't YOU do it since you think it's so easy.

You listen to Doug Stewart? Exactly :smh:

BTW, whatever happened to the 2 Live Stews? I know they aren't on BSPN anymore but I mean are they still out here on radio?
You talking about 2 brother who can't get a job, these 2 brothers were pro black and I think it hurt them. I loved their show and check for anything new at least once a month, but nothing so far :(
