When a non practicer converts(or reverts as muslims believe everyone is born muslim) you must take an arab name in traditional practice. Your name is considered holy and part of your deen(islamic character) just as much as praying 5x a day is. It is also why, when women marry, they are not allowed to take the name of their husband and legal adoption is heavily frowned upon. It muddles the name, which is everything in ancient arabic, and islam, culture.
