He said something very powerful in the first interview. "It forces you to reconsider everything you assumed about what makes Superman Superman"
And also, a lot of the hypothetical 'What if' stories aren't that good.
So if you can create a story that's a hypothetical re-imagination of a character with some substance, you got something.
Look at The Boys. That is exactly what The Boys IS, a hypothetical re-imagination of characters with substance.
Not to derail
I love the boys Ennis is on my all time list Kripke is Supernatural so its all love too
that core of Hughie and Starlight is so important and powerful
but many sleep on Butcher love of Hughie and the pain regret he feels EVERY time he looks at him
My only worry about the boys is having Homelander be the big bad that they ALMOST always get.
And the other characters being so stained as to not want to ROOT for them at some point
which stresses the importance of Starlight and Hughie and to a lesser extent the rest of the Boys
but there HAS to be good heroes in this universe
Can't be that EVERYONE who gets these powers are trash
and every season can't be we gotta kill Homelander and oops.
Again I have COMPLETE faith they can pull this off and stick the landing.
But I wouldn't say making the characters all douche bags necessarily gives them "substance"
I think its more so we need NEW TALENT to tackle these heroes (*ahem looking at YOU)
Superman can STILL be Superman (as proven by the WB) and be a interesting character.
