Three-times World Cup winner Pele was taken to hospital with a urinary infection earlier this week, but his condition has now worsened and he has been transferred to intensive care.

The 74-year old former Brazil player is in the Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo.

Widely regarded as the finest player to play the game, he had an operation to remove kidney stones earlier this month.

He won three World Cups as a player and was named "Football Player of the Century" by FIFA, "Athlete of the Century" by the International Olympic Committee, and a "national treasure" by Brazil's government.

Man, if I got juked by him...I couldn't even be mad. It would have been an honor. I would have been one of many...the only way you could stop him is to foul him.

I pray for a full recovery.

When one of my White Co-Workers was kicking supplies around a few days ago, he was going on about how he was Pele.

I said to him,

"NAH MOTHER FUCKER! YOU'RE GIORGIO CHINAGLIA."

" AAAWWW C'MON! WHY CAN'T I BE PELE?"

Pele improving after being taken into special care unit

Pele's condition is improving despite him being moved to a special care unit at a hospital in Sao Paulo.

The Brazil legend, who was admitted with a urinary infection three days ago, is expected to remain in hospital for at least a week, according to his spokesman.

Jose Fornos Rodrigues, Pele's personal aide, said he was "completely fine" and the move was mainly to protect his privacy with several hundred fans gathered outside the Albert Einstein hospital.

"He was uncomfortable with so many people coming. It'll be quieter now," Rodrigues said.

Pele is in intensive care in Sao Paulo, three days after being admitted with a urinary infection.
The former Santos striker had surgery for kidney stones on November 13 before being released two days later.

In a statement, the hospital said: “Edson Arantes do Nascimento (Pele) remains in hospital.

“To receive the best care he was transferred in order to be monitored in a special care unit."

Pele is a three-time World Cup winner and was named by FIFA as their joint Player of the Twenty Century along with Diego Maradona. He was also named Athlete of the Century by the International Olympic Committee.

Nicknamed O Rei (The King), Pele is widely regarded as the greatest footballer in the history of the game, having scored 1,281 goals in 1,363 games.

On the international stage, he scored 77 goals in 91 games and won his first World Cup aged just 17, scoring twice in the 1958 final win over hosts Sweden.

Pelé’s cancer worsens with soccer legend’s heart, lungs now affected

SAO PAULO — Pelé’s health has worsened during his hospital stay to regulate his cancer medication, doctors said Wednesday.

The Albert Einstein hospital in Sao Paulo said in a statement Wednesday that Pelé’s cancer has advanced and that the 82-year-old Brazilian soccer great is under “elevated care” related to “kidney and cardiac dysfunctions.”

The hospital did not mention any signs of the three-time World Cup winner’s recent respiratory infection, which was aggravated by COVID-19.

Edson Arantes do Nascimento, who is globally known as Pelé, is undergoing chemotherapy in his fight against cancer since he had a colon tumor removed in September 2021. Neither his family nor the hospital have said whether it had spread to other organs.

Kely Nascimento, one of his daughters, said Pelé will stay in the hospital during Christmas.

“We decided with doctors that, for many reasons, it will be best for us to stay here, with all the care that this new family at Einstein gives us,” she wrote on Instagram. “We will even make some caipirinhas (no kidding). We love you and we will give up an update next week.”

Newspaper Folha de S.Paulo reported Saturday that Pelé’s chemotherapy is not working and that doctors had decided to put him on palliative care. Pelé’s family denied that report. The Associated Press could not confirm the newspaper’s information.

Pelé led Brazil to victory the 1958, 1962 and 1970 World Cups and remains one of the team’s all-time leading scorer with 77 goals. Neymar tied Pelé’s record during the latest World Cup.

Several tributes and get-well soon wishes were made for the former footballer during the Qatar tournament, which was won by Argentina on Sunday.
