Pound-for-pound king and unified light heavyweight world titleholder Andre Ward said in a statement on his website that he is "leaving" boxing.

"I want to be clear -- I am leaving because my body can no longer put up with the rigors of the sport and therefore my desire to fight is no longer there," the statement said. "If I cannot give my family, my team, and the fans everything that I have, then I should no longer be fighting."

Last month, Ward told ringside media that his television contract with HBO is up.

He added that, contrary to industry chatter, he remains under contract with promoter Roc Nation Sports, even though rumors have swirled that he was gearing up for a jump to Top Rank.

Ward (32-0, 16 KOs), 33, of Oakland, California, has been with HBO since he knocked out Chad Dawson in 2012, though Ward has had two long layoffs since because of promotional issues.

Ward has fought six of his past seven fights for HBO, including both of his pay-per-view fights with Sergey Kovalev -- a controversial unanimous decision win in November to take Kovalev's three 175-pound world title belts, followed by an eighth-round knockout victory in the rematch on June 17.

Big year for boxing retirements.

The person who should be happiest about this is Kovalev. Now he can eat again at 175.

Salute, Andre. :cheers::bravo:
Good point about Kovalev too.

Hopefully he's saved like his Oakland brethren Beastmode and can live comfortably. He's got a future as a commentator, very well spoken brother.

Not sure about that. Dude never appeared to be a bullshit artist, and who is there to negotiate with? He's pretty secure with his TV gig so...
Who is there to negotiate with ? Boxers, promoters, network partners. Do you read your own posts? Its all pretty much there laid out as a possibility.

And I'm not saying he is or isn't. Just that it sounds like that door is open to do just that.

I know he has one coming up, but he looked mentally defeated in the ring that night, now he talking about he don't need a trainer and shit

I think this next fight will determine (to me) where he is mentally. If he doesn't look good here I think he retires.

Ward hinted at retirement before the Kovalev rematch so this seems like it could be real and not a tactic...Kovalev is gonna have it rough the rest of his career...the air of invincibility is gone both within his own mind and the mind of his opponents...John David Jackson going around saying how hard Kovalev is to deal with and other things (how much of a asshole he is in real life, saying he submitted in the second Ward fight and can't take it to the body, saying ow hard he is to coach and won't put in the work in training) doesn't help things either...that division has a lot of monsters coming up too so he should do that fight with Adonis and keep it moving

I think it has more to do with him wanting to retire undefeated just like Floyd Mayweather. He seen the GGG vs. Canelo fight and see how cheating goes on, so he don't want to risk getting cheated like GGG and losing his undefeated record.

Point was... :hmm:
He's the biggest name in the LHW division and doesn't need to play these types of games to get what he wants. He doesn't NEED to go through all that bait and switch bullshit at this point...

If anything, fools like Stevenson, etc. would LOVE to have an excuse to avoid him, can keep making money fighting lesser fighters, without the risk...

I feel you though, could be...
