It could be that they have mentally given up and know they'll be in prison. The other thing is maybe they are suffering from withdrawal so they aren't functioning properly to begin with. It doesn't make sense for the people who are bringing in the drugs or whatever though and on some level they don't care about the people who are bringing it in.

Exactly, this just feeds into the hype of the story and generates interest aka clickbait.

These types of stories are great for entertainment but mean nothing in reality.

At worse they'd either have to try him separately with a different prosecutor or have her removed from the case entirely (which isn't happening.)

As long as they aren't introducing evidence obtained while she represented him I don't think it'll be an issue but the defense will still try to use it to their clients advantage which is there job.
