Bystander sucker-punches NYPD officer trying to detain woman, video shows
MANHATTAN — As cellphones recorded a woman’s arrest in Manhattan, a bystander can be seen punching an officer in the face multiple times from behind, according to the NYPD.
Officers were trying to restrain a struggling Asia Banks, 38, near West 144th Street and Frederick Douglass Boulevard when another man started yelling “that’s my sister” and tried to pull a female officer away from Banks. Terrell Mitchell, 26, can then be seen violently punching the male officer, who had his back to Mitchell, multiple times in the head.
In the video, the female officer can be seen gripping her gun in its holster as Banks grabs her wrist.
Mitchell ran from the scene, but was later arrested after officers found him nearby. He now faces charges of assault on a police officer, obstructing governmental administration, criminal possession of a weapon, disorderly conduct and public consumption of an alcoholic beverage.
Banks was charged with assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, obstructing governmental administration and disorderly conduct. The pair live together in an apartment on 8th Avenue near 144th Street.
The officers were treated for minor injuries and released.
