Caitlin Clarke vs. Angel Reese: The Rookie of the Year Debate in the WNBA

When Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese take the court together as teammates at the WNBA All-Star Game on Saturday, the 2024 No. 1 overall pick believes her Sky rival will do something better than anyone else on the court.
During a red-carpet interview to kick off the festivities in Arizona, Clark predicted Reese will lead the All-Star Game in rebounds.
Reese’s 11.9 rebounds per game are the best in the WNBA this season, and Clark clearly expects her to show out on Saturday night when the WNBA All-Star team faces the U.S. women’s national team at Footprint Center in Phoenix.

“She’s certainly probably going to lead the game in rebounds. I expect that out of her that’s just what she does,” Clark said Thursday night.

The comment quickly made its way around social media, and, of course, became a topic of interest due to the budding rivalry between the two rookies.
Though Clark and Reese have tried not to give it too much attention in the media, it has captured the imagination of basketball fans, as the Clark vs. Reese debate has raged on since the the 2023 NCAA title game.
The two have been notable rivals since their days in college when LSU topped Iowa in that tournament before the Hawkeyes got revenge on the Tigers in the elite eight this year.

Clark expressed excitement over the idea of getting to play with her during All-Star weekend.
“I’m pretty excited,” she said. “I think it’s cool. It’s obviously rare to have two rookies in the All-Star Game, so I just think enjoy that. Obviously the fans are super excited about it. I just think it’s really good fo the W, and obviously she’s having an incredible year, so it’s going to be really fun.”
Reese has starred for Chicago since she was taken seventh overall in the April draft, averaging 13.5 points per game.

What do you think? Post a comment.
Clark has lived up to the hype after being taken No. 1 overall and is coming off a game in which she set a WNBA single-game assists record with 19 on Wednesday night.

Charles Barkley rips coverage of WNBA star Caitlin Clark

Over the course of the WNBA season, Yardbarker has chronicled what sports analysts and notable talking heads have had to say about Caitlin Clark and how she has been covered in her rookie campaign. And this week, Charles Barkley entered the chat.

The NBA Hall of Famer turned TV analyst went on a profanity-laced monologue with The Ringer's Bill Simmons this week with regard to Clark. His gripe? How the general media has covered the No. 1 overall draft pick.

"They cannot have f---ed this Caitlin Clark thing up any worse if they tried," Barkley said.
"People believe what we say on television. Just because people don't like you or your personality, they can't get on TV and slander you," he continued. "It's total bull----."

To Barkley's point, not all of the attention on Clark this season has been positive. While she has set records and built a campaign worthy of Rookie of the Year honors, she has also been criticized for being a bad teammate due to her competitive nature.

Barkley made it very clear he isn't buying into that line of thinking, and praised Clark for how she conducts herself.

"The thing I love about her — she never says a word," Barkley said.

Clark leads the league in average assists per game (8.4) and ranks second in average three-pointers made per game (3.0).

Shaq dismantled Charles Barkley's rant about the WNBA being petty with Caitlin Clark

Shaquille O'Neal has avidly supported his friend and colleague, Charles Barkley. But he disagrees with Barkley's assessment of Caitlin Clark's WNBA transition.

Barkley made waves early this year when he called out the league for being "petty" towards Clark. His words eventually reached high-profile players like A'ja Wilson and even fellow rookie Angel Reese. Wilson took the high road when asked to comment at the time, but Reese seemingly called Barkley out.

The narrative that WNBA players are "jealous" of Caitlin has continued throughout the season. But Shaq isn't quite buying it. Per Lindsay Schnell, here's what he recently shared with USA TODAY:

"There’s envious jealousy. There’s professional jealousy," O’Neal said. "Sure, there’s a lot of people who are professionally jealous. I am. I’m professionally jealous of a lot of people. I’m professionally jealous of Steph [Curry]. He makes $60 million. But hey, that’s life."
"You gotta also understand that we’re not just going to give it to you because everybody else is giving it to you...Yeah, you’re great, but you ain’t that great yet. Calm down. We still got Diana Taurasi. We still got A’ja Wilson, if you’re gonna give [Caitlin] props make sure our girls that are dominating in this league get the same props."
"Loudmouths like Chuck are talking about hating — it’s not hating...As good as Caitlin Clark is, we’ve had a lot of young ladies who have been doing good [before] and not getting props. People like props, and they want to feel good when you’re talking about [their league]...it’s not hating. Everybody has to wait their turn."
