I drove a 3yo Toyota (with 72,000km on it) for an additional 16+ years before selling it in the summer of 2019.
It was great on gas & only had 1 minor repair issue around 2010.
When I sold it ... a 24yo woman bought it as her 1st car. She brought her boyfriend & a friend along (who was a car inspector). He looked it over inside and out, and went under the car. Said it was in great shape for a 20yo car ... I was like ... "Alright ... good luck with it"
The major thing I had to repair on my car so far was the fuel injector. The repair was $1000 because of course you had to take the engine halfway apart to replace the fuel injector and I went to the dealership you don’t want too many people doing that job who don’t know what they do with Kia cars.
It does but something you want the dealership to only do and you have to pay a price for that. I was going to replace the thing myself until I seen how you replace it and I was like nope hey Kia dealership deal with this I pay you.

Speaking of cars ... one of the things that has worked well for me over the years is having good commutes. Hardly any stop and go traffic at all (good amount of highway during non-rush hour). That has drastically cut down on repair issues & improved fuel consumption.

I was going to put down 40K on my F-150 Lightning and finance the rest a year and a half ago but the interest rates were just too damn high, so I stroked a check for the whole ticket. Fuck these greedy ass banks... I hate paying interest, making these banks richer than they already are.

Agreed. It's frustrating and disheartening when you see stuff like that.
The TV or print ads from furniture stores saying "Don't pay for 36 - 48 months" and knowing their targets are people lacking financial literacy or wanting the immediate gratification of a new sofa / couch.
It should never take someone 3 to 4 years to pay off $1000 - 2000. And like you said - potentially paying that thing off 3x over in the process.
Got a story for you. My dad's father never drove. Got lifts to where he needed to go, or took public transit. Anyway ... he took his wife car shopping back in the late-60s or early-70s. He had seasonal work and wasn't too well off, but was always frugal. Had the money in his pocket to pay straight cash for her car. She always presented herself well. Whereas he was sorta dishevelled. Ball cap, work jacket, and khakis or well-worn slacks.
They were trying to run game on him at the dealership, as expected. Him not being a car guy ... didn't have much to reply back with. Him and his wife really wanted the car though. Anyway ... salesman goes off and talks to a coworker and grandpa overhears him making fun of him for his appearance, saying he's broke / a bum, etc.
Grandpa hears that shit and tells his wife they are taking their business elsewhere. Walks over to the guy who had been clowning him, shows him the wad of cash in his pocket and says - "I was planning on buying that car straight cash, but whatever ..." and walks out.
