Deadline is reporting that Chadwick Boseman has officially aligned himself to play Yasuke, the first African samurai to swing a sword in Japan.

Erik Feig’s Picturestart has teamed with Mike De Luca and his De Luca Productions banner, Stephen L’Heureux and his Solipsist banner, and Boseman and Logan Coles’ X●ception Content to produce the film adaptation of Yasuke, who served under Japanese warlord Oda Nobunaga in 16th Century Japan.

Yasuke was a native of Portuguese Mozambique who was brought to Japan as a slave to Jesuit missionaries. The first black man to set foot on Japanese soil, Yasuke’s arrival aroused the interest of Nobunaga, a ruthless warlord seeking to unite the fractured country under his banner. A complex relationship developed between the two men as Yasuke earned Nobunaga’s friendship, respect — and ultimately, the honor, swords and title of samurai.

Doug Miro is writing the script. Miro co-created the hit Netflix series Narcos, which he continues to write and exec produce alongside co-creator Carlo Bernard and showrunner Eric Newman.

“The legend of Yasuke is one of history’s best kept secrets, the only person of non-Asian origin to become a Samurai,” Boseman said. “That’s not just an action movie, that’s a cultural event, an exchange, and I am excited to be part of it.”

Having played Black Panther/T’Challa in Black Panther, Boseman has also starred as Jackie Robinson in 42, James Brown in Get On Up, and Thurgood Marshall in Marshall. He will next star in STX’s 21 Bridges, which he and Coles also produced along The Russo Brothers.

Good... but damn Hollywood?!
Can we see someone else on the big screen?!
This nigga was James Brown, Jackie Robinson, & Thurgood Marshall.
They’ll probably cast him for Colin Powell’ biopic too.
That means his name puts asses in seats. The title itself ain't bringing out the numbers they would want. A little star power Can help. Otherwise it's a film about some shit only about 5 people ever heard of

Finding good actors is hard these days. Most of these young American kids don’t want to take acting class or master there Kraft.

Why do you think a lot of actors are from England or Australia? It’s a drought trying to find good decent America actors.

A lot of the young kids don’t want to put in the hard work.

It would be nice to cast a different black male star for this movie, but as stated In an earlier post, Hollywood Is all about money, they want male money, female money, black money, cac money , Asian money....ect. .Mahershala Ali, Mustafa Shakir, or Michael Jai White. These dudes are not gonna get them the monetary return there looking for.

black actors have come along away
but outside of 'black movies' hollywood seems to focus on one or 2 black actors/actresses at a time outside of Sam & Denzel

look how criminally underused Lupito has been after winning an Oscar

I think the costar in 21 Bridges & If Beale Street Could Talk Stephan James may have next

Gotta sell the movie being this is a potential risky investment....it was going to come down to Chadwick, Mackie, Boyega, Ali or MBJ probably. Not a strong list especially when you consider their age group.

I think that’s Lupitas own doing....she’s had some great roles.

I think Stephen James is dope but he’s kind of sliding into the indie roles it seems. His resume is solid though.

Lmao :roflmao3:

When dude passes on Hollywood will probably invest in new tech to reanimate this nigga so he can play himself in his own biopic.

Happy for the brother tho, he's a great actor and seems like a good dude.

Those 3 were my picks and I get it Mustafa is not a name yet and Jai White isn't either but Mahershala has 2 Oscars for best supporting actor now
