Christopher Nolan Thinks Netflix is ‘Missing a Huge Opportunity’

Critically acclaimed writer/director Christopher Nolan has some thoughts on the rising film industry behemoth that is Netflix. Once again a trending facet of popular culture, Nolan has been a key mover and shaker in the entertainment for quite some time. Starting with his breakthrough success in the form of Memento from 2000, the English-American filmmaker has since gone down in film history as the man who brought the much beloved The Dark Knight trilogy to life.

More recently, Nolan saw his critically acclaimed sci-fi epic Interstellar go on to become a major success at the global box office in 2014, and is all set to enjoy further attention with the release of his hotly anticipated World War II drama Dunkirk this week. Backed by overwhelmingly positive early reviews and a certified fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Nolan’s take on the infamous evacuation of British and Allied forces from Nazi occupied territory in 1940 has moviegoers taking note of his filmmaking prowess once again – and the latest word has the director offering a pointed critique of Netflix in particular.

In a recent conversation with the director published by IndieWire, Nolan waxed poetic on working within the parameters of the Hollywood studio system, and lambasted the move to digital distribution most popularly utilized by Netflix. A longtime lover of the theatrical experience that many filmmakers still believe can only be achieved at the multiplex, Nolan commented on the digital distribution model implemented by Netflix as follows:

“Netflix has a bizarre aversion to supporting theatrical films. They have this mindless policy of everything having to be simultaneously streamed and released, which is obviously an untenable model for theatrical presentation. So they’re not even getting in the game, and I think they’re missing a huge opportunity.”

Comparatively, Nolan was more forgiving of the business model implemented by Amazon Studios, which allows for a 90-day window wherein their films are distributed theatrically before being made available to stream online. But despite attracting the attention of such acclaimed filmmakers as Bong Joon Ho to the Netflix fold following the release of his sci-fi satire Okja late last month, Nolan was still leery, stating:

“I think the investment that Netflix is putting into interesting filmmakers and interesting projects would be more admirable if it weren’t being used as some kind of bizarre leverage against shutting down theaters. It’s so pointless. I don’t really get it.”

The debate over whether or not Netflix can become a viable platform for film distribution will likely continue, and those against it have found another ally in Nolan. And just in case anyone thought Nolan might consider distributing one of his movies with Netflix supposing such an offer were ever presented, the filmmaker has taken a resoundingly defiant stance towards the possibility, commenting, “Well, why would you? If you make a theatrical film, it’s to be played in theaters.”

His foundations are being rattled. Understandable, but you can't stop people from saving money:

Going out to theaters for two

-$50 tickets
-$40 food
-Going out dealing with people

Netflix and Chill:

-$10 a month
-Cool out at home
-Impregnate someone

I know which one most people are choosing.

$50 in tickets for two people?

I was about to say tickets be 5 dollars per person.....they just want to get you in the theater.....the tickets are going to be the cheap part.
depending what state..ny(manhattan) i think it's closer to 14 not imax or 3d
A single IMAX 3D ticket (for 1 Adult) costs about $26 bucks, in NYC.
A regular ticket (for 1 Adult) costs about $14 bucks.

Matinee prices are cheaper.

Though its often hard for companies to accept, nothing guarantees your business model will last & be profitable in perpetuity. Time moves on. Nolan doesn't dispute any of this. His point is simple. We all love the option of going to the theater & sharing a communal experience on the best platform available (at least sometimes). Until something better comes along, this is the presentation he wants for his movies. If we want to continue to have theaters in business in order to continue to do this, businesses have to work together to agree on model that allows this. They've done so for years in the past, although the agreements have changed over time. Theater time-frame windows, home video windows, pay-cable windows have all shrunk over the years. VCR's, tapes, DVR have come & gone. Amazon is now bypassing all the middle men. He could care less about all the changing tech as long as they leave an avenue for him to show his movies in what he thinks is the best platform. He may not win in the long run, but he's trying. I can't be mad at that.

he's part right

netflix ain't stopping me from going to the movies...and i got a KICK AZZ home theater

but I've always wondered why netfix doesn't invest in more big budget movies, maybe the return is not there

and if i were them i would not drop entire seasons at the same time, ALL the time. some I'd trickle out slowly and some would drop at the same time. mix it up a bit.

Nolan is missing the opportunity to end his movies without some bullshit up in the air endings. I fucking hated his batman movies especially that last one when Bruce Wayne's mutant healing factor kicked in and he grew back cartilage in his joints and healed a broken back in a couple days.

I guess it depends where you go. Here in the DMV, it's some 19-22 per person plus tax and tip. That's for the higher end theaters that have lazy boys and serve Tuna Tartare and Malbec brought to your chair. iMax and 3D cost extra on top of all of that.

Regular theaters are about 16-18.

Don't get me wrong I like the Tim Burton ones part 1 and 2.....but they don't have shit on the Nolan ones......

I gotta give Batman Begins another chance...I hated that movie. I thought that shit was boring as hell.

I loved Dark Knight Rises.

I agree about The Dark Knight......you take Joker out or put any other villain in it....that movie may be shit. People always tell me that's the best one....I think the 3rd one was better honestly.

Batman Begins villain its where they lost me......not that it was bad but not really a interesting villain.
