The Walking Dead's Danai Gurira officially been cast in Black Panther, as revealed at the Marvel Hall H panel at Comic-Con International: San Diego. Gurira will play Okoye, the head of the elite Wakandan secruity force called the Dora Milaje.
Danai, a Zimbabwean American actress, is best known for her role as Michonne in The Walking Dead. AMC announced their casting decision regarding Danai back in March 2012, and the actress has since experienced a surge in popularity following her stint. And, now, the actress will be trading in Michonne’s katana momentarily to star in Marvel’s Black Panther.
By joining Black Panther, Danai is joining a packed cast as Chadwick Boseman will reprise his role as T’Challa/Black Panther. He will be surrounded by fellow cast mates like Lupita Nyong’o, Michael B. Jordan, and Andy Serkis. Of course, Andy Serkis will return as Ulysses Klaue as the villain debuted in The Avengers: Age of Ultron. Currently, there's no word on who Lupita, Danai, or Michael will be playing in, but fans are already speculating which roles they might fill.
For those unfamiliar with the group, the Dora Milaje stands as the Black Panther’s bodyguards and is compromised of some seriously awesome Wakandan women. The superior warriors are assembled to fiercely protect their nation with their lethal skills, so tell me - doesn’t that sound like something Danai would rock at?
Black Panther is slated to hit theaters on July 6th 2018.
