With the season opener nearly eight months away, the Colorado football roster certainly isn’t complete.

Last year, head coach Deion Sanders and his staff made significant roster moves in the winter and again in the spring and even made some tweaks as late as August.

There won’t be as many changes this year as last year, but the Buffaloes’ roster is already different and, they hope, better than it was during a 4-8 (1-8 Pac-12) campaign in 2023.

For now, the Buffs unofficially have 79 of 85 scholarship spots filled (24 of those with newcomers). More moves will be made, but here’s a look at where the Buffs stand at each position.

Quarterbacks (4 on scholarship): Rising senior Shedeur Sanders is the starter and on the mend from injuries that cut his 2023 season a game and a half short. Redshirt freshman Ryan Staub, who looked good in the finale at Utah, is also slated to return. Two sophomore transfers, Walter Taylor (Vanderbilt) and Destin Wade (Kentucky) have boosted the depth. The Buffs could add another QB, but look solid with this group.

Running backs (4): Junior Alton McCaskill IV was never healthy last year, but the former Houston star is the potential leader here. Senior Sy’veon Wilkerson and sophomore Dylan Edwards had really good moments, too. That’s a solid trio to go along with incoming freshman Micah Welch. CU is likely to add another one or two backs.

Receivers (11): The 11 doesn’t include the best receiver on the team, Travis Hunter, who we’ll include at cornerback. It does include Jimmy Horn Jr., who had a really good first season at CU, and transfer Will Sheppard, the leading receiver at Vanderbilt the past two years. Transfers Terrell Timmons Jr. (NC State) and Cordale Russell (TCU), plus dynamic freshmen Kamron Mikell and Drelon Miller, join a group that includes several other talented youngsters, including junior Tar’Varish Dawson and sophomore Omarion Miller. Look for the Buffs to add one or two more.

Tight ends (2): It was a thin group last year and could be again, but the Buffs added Cincinnati transfer Chamon Metayer and are prioritizing this spot a bit more. The only other scholarship player here is Louis Passarello, who missed the 2023 season with an injury. His status going forward is unknown. CU could add a couple more players here.

Offensive linemen (15): After a dismal 2023 season up front, there has been a heavy emphasis here this offseason. The Buffs landed the No. 1 prep lineman in the country (Jordan Seaton) and five FBS starters through the transfer portal. They’ll also get Tyler Brown back after he was forced to sit out the 2023 season after transferring a second time. Starters Jack Bailey and Savion Washington are also back. Eleven of the 15 are seniors or juniors. CU could stand pat with this group, but some movement in or out wouldn’t be surprising.

Defensive linemen (9): Transfers Chidozie Nwankwo (Houston), Anquin Barnes (Alabama) and Quency Wiggins (LSU) have been huge additions this offseason. CU returns some experience with Shane Cokes, Chazz Wallace, JJ Hawkins and Amari McNeill, so this group appears to be much-improved. The most recent episode of Amazon’s “Coach Prime” series said sophomore Bishop Thomas is suspended, with his status for next season unknown. If reinstated, Thomas could be a key player. If not, the Buffs could look to add more pieces.

Edge (9): Graduation hit this group, but the Buffs have addressed it through the transfer portal, getting Keaten Wade from Kentucky and Samuel Okunlola from Pittsburgh. They also added highly productive freshmen Eric Brantley and Brandon Davis-Swain. Arden Walker, Jeremiah Brown, Deeve Harris and Khairi Manns all return, as does Taje McCoy, who was praised often during his true freshman season.

Inside linebackers (7): LaVonta Bentley returns after having a really good season for the Buffs, but they upgraded the position when they landed Florida State transfer DJ Lundy. In 42 games with the Seminoles, he had 170 tackles and 14 tackles for loss. A fully healthy Demouy Kennedy could help and the Buffs have a trio of redshirt freshmen they like. The Buffs could use some experienced reinforcements, though. Currently counted is Brendan Gant, who is out of eligibility, but hopes to obtain a medical hardship for one more season.

Cornerbacks (8): It all starts with Travis Hunter, of course, and the Buffs need sophomore Cormani McClain to take the next step. They went out landed Liberty transfer Preston Hodge, however, to upgrade the spot. Omarion Cooper and Carter Stoutmire are talented corners slated to return.

Safeties (7): This appears to be one of CU’s most solid units. With Shilo Sanders, Cam’Ron Silmon-Craig and Trevor Woods back, the Buffs are in great shape. If rising sophomore Jaden Milliner-Jones takes the next step, the Buffs will be loaded at the top. Jahquez Robinson, Myles Slusher and Vito Tisdale are experienced players who could push for starting roles or at least provide good depth.

Specialists (3): CU is set here, with punter Mark Vassett and place-kickers Jace Feely and Alejandro Mata all slated to return.

Man why you named two of the most noticeable and favorite players in that room…(outside of Trav)
Nothing gonna happen with them, i mean why something should. Horn Jr gonna do his thing(if he had a couple more catches, he would have declared)
Lil Mathis gonna have to figure out a way to get more reps but dude be solid since getting to Boulder.

Running 4 wide, they need a deep stable of route runners…

Remember these players are no longer on the roster…

Xavier Weaver
Javon Antonio
Willie Gaines
Chernet Estes
Cole Boscia

get a couple from highschool then get some dawgs from portal….

Your room is right back where “YOU” want it….
I think we both have been giving the social media coverage too much credit. Well Off had Jimmy Horn Jr looking unstoppable in practice but he was not a reliable playmaker throughout the season. He has never put up the numbers that Wester has. I think he will stay on the team, but don’t see him getting as many targets. Is Mathis on scholarship?

I’m excited for this season, the weaknesses of last year roster appear to be addressed but I’m managing my expectations better. The media sites we follow overhype players and opposing teams are retooling as well.

If I remember correctly, Mathis don’t have to be on an athletic scholarship

Jimmy showed what we saw during practice…. It wasn’t full throttle like Weaver but he had production. Dude had drops but definitely wasn’t the most disappointing player on the team.

I like the offensive line and receiver room. They appear to have some talent to work with.

The question is who will step up as the #1 receiver. Wester has the most production at the college level and his personality is definitely a good fit for the Buffs..lol

At running back Edwards has already put on weight. He is start to look like an ever down back

The problem is that him and Wester play the same position at the slot. Wester’s production is much better statistically.

@^SpiderMan^ is correct and I agree 100%. He is questioning how Horn will increase his production with considerably less targets.

Last season if they had a marginally better defense they would have won at minimum 3 to 4 more games.

Despite all the negative publicity the offensive line took last season, they were not the reason they lost 8 games.

The defense being ranked 130th and giving up sooo many yards was the actual reason. To me that is very promising because if you can keep the same production on offense, and have the defense ranked at minimum top 60, you looking at maybe 8 wins minimum

Travis Hunter will be the #1 receiver. IMO this is his best position and the one he should be focusing on. He is a good CB with a lot of big play ability, but he is not a shutdown CB who can dependably take the best opposing WR out of the game.

I think Mcaskill, Edwards, and Wilkerson will look a lot better this year with a scheme change and OL personnel changes.

My biggest concerns are the LB and CB positions.

I’m rooting for him too, but looking at things objectively, Horn got those numbers as a 3rd option in an extremely pass heavy offense. Last year he doubled the production of his past 2 seasons at USF.

This year, they are claiming they will run the ball more and they added more productive WRs and a more productive TE.

Typically you will only run one slot. The formation would be x,y, z and f. Some may change the jargon on the letters but that is generally what they are called.

Now I have seen teams use two slots so it is possible.

Arguably, Colorado has the best receiving core in the nation. Of course they will need to show it on the field but I would say it would be hard to argue against them being the best.

They are good enough to make it tough for Hunter to get snaps.

I am leaning towards saying he was a a better receiver that DB. I say that with some caution, because he plays so many snaps, I would like to see how he looks at DB with a normal snap

Gage Goldberg commits to Colorado

The son of a WWE legend heads to Boulder and adds depth to the Buffs defensive core

Jeff Hauser10 hours ago
Gage Goldberg will be talking his talents to Colorado. The son of entertainment legend, Bill Goldberg, announced he would be Boulder bound on X (Formerly Twitter) on Sunday morning.

"After a great conversation, I am honored to announce that I am committing to the University of Colorado to continue my football and academic career," Goldberg wrote.

Gage Goldberg commits to Colorado

The 6-foot, 205-pound middle linebacker from Boerne Champion (Texas) is the seventh addition to CU's 2024 recruiting class. He's another two-sport athlete, excelling in football and baseball. Goldberg was an absolute force during his senior year with 154 total tackles (7.5 for loss), eight hurries, four forced fumble, one sack, blocked field goal, and forced safety. He's excited to play for Coach Prime, who was a teammate of his father's with the Atlanta Falcons starting in the early 90s.

"The main draw was that Colorado has an amazing coaching staff and obviously a great head coach that will help me excel in every way to become a better football player, and eventually to get me to the next level," Goldberg told BuffsBeat.

Goldberg leaned on his father for guidance during the recruiting process. It is a much different experience from the one the WWE Hall of Famer had in the late 80s when he committed to Georgia, but one they've navigated through together. He turned down other offers, including one from Alabama to be at CU.

"My dad's advice was go to the program that stands out to you the most and the one you know that you will love. I already know at this moment that I will love Colorado and it will also be great to be learning from one of my dad’s best friends ever."

Goldberg becomes the 29th player to commit to Colorado's 2024 combined class, which is ranked 21st overall, according to 247Sports. He's also the 12th addition to the Buffaloes defense on the books for next year.

Deion Sanders announces offensive coordinator and other coaching changes

Pat Shurmur is here to stay

RylandScholesJanuary 14, 2024 6:05 pm
usa_today_21971555.0.jpg

After nearly two months of uncertainty, Colorado officially has their offensive coordinator for the 2024 season. In a video of the first team meeting posted by Darius Sanders, Deion confirmed some key coaching changes that will affect the team in 2024.

The first and most pressing news is that Coach Prime is retaining Pat Shurmur as the Buffs’ offensive coordinator. Shurmur called the plays in Colorado’s final four games of the season after the offense began to seriously stall out under the control of Sean Lewis. The Buffs didn’t fare much better with Shurmur at the helm unfortunately, as the team went 0-4 during his play calling tenure to close their season.

After season’s end, Deion took his time to name his offensive coordinator for 2024. The two final candidates were likely between Shurmur and former Tampa Bay Bucs OC Byron Leftwich. Evidently, Shurmur managed to snag the gig and will be calling the shots on offense next year. 2024 is going to be an incredibly important year for the Colorado offense, as the coaching staff completely revamped their offensive line to help protect their Heisman hopeful quarterback. Shurmur is going to have a plethora of talent as his disposal next year, but we’ll have to see if he can make the most of it.

Two other important coaching changes were also announced on Sunday. Brett Bartolone, who was Colorado’s wide receivers coach in 2023, will be moving to the role of tight ends coach in 2024. Bartolone and his unit had a very successful season last year, as the position group proved to be very solid despite having to deal with a plethora of injuries. To fill in for the void left by Bartolone moving jobs, Coach Prime has named Jason Phillips as the Buffs’ new wide receivers coach. Phillips was the co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach under Deion during his time at Jackson State. Phillips will be rejoining Prime’s staff in Boulder to help develop Colorado’s absolutely stacked receiving core in 2024.

As of now, there’s been no news on who will be named the Buffs’ new defensive coordinator. A few names have popped up (Ken Norton Jr. and Mike Zimmer), but that’s pure speculation at this point. As soon as a DC is named, we’ll be sure to keep you updated.
