Nah, I take that to mean that "the devil" was testing Will, by putting him in an uncomfortable situation......
I would say the test would be regardless if Chris was the one telling the jokes or not because behind the scenes there was already so much drama, tension and what not. They could've been out together somewhere and if the right person said/did the wrong thing, Will may have reacted similarly "in the name of saving (face or their marriage.)"
Not necessarily that Chris was sent/ used by the Devil...... the devil is in the details and the details of all the behind the scenes shit is what lead to the slap....
