One of the biggest displays of this is when GM closed a HUGE plant here in Ohio. When I say huge, I mean acres of nothing but buildings and parking lots that all went away. You've never seen more Harley Davidsons up for sale in one area of the country when these cacs lost their jobs to automation and relocation.
I get this is a slippery slope because there were a lot of Black people making decent money there too, but a cac making $30+ bucks an hour and OT on top of that probably thought they were working at NASA or some shit. Most of those cac probably barely got out of high school and back 20 years ago when the factory was pumping out cars, they could live like they had a graduate degree.
That place closing down was such a huge strain on the economy in this part of the state for years! Shit was on the news everyday!

That's because they saw the writings on the wall, or rather, understood the systematic structure in which they lived. They knew that once they were no longer of value to the point of dependency, they would go through exactly what they are going through now - female rebellion. People who live in towns where there are Manufacturering plants saw it as guaranteed labor and it was. They didn't worry about school because it was a guaranteed job. And If 1 family member was working in the plant everyone saw him or her as the gateway.

This exact same thinking is what happened in textile mills in North and South Carolina.
I was raised in Columbus GA and we had the military base, but also the textile mills. Between the 2 you could always get a job. When the textile mills closed and were moved abroad it did take a toll on the city.
I think moving all manufaturing out of the US in order to reduce the price of goods devasated a lot of cities. It also increased crime. Nothing makes a family more stable than the ability of the bread winner to get a job. College isn't meant for everyone, but when the average joe blow can get a good labor (manufacturing job) and make enough money to provide for his family, it works for the greater good of the community.

Based on spending on a kids education per capita, the south and deep south have never valued educating its residents / voters.
The senators that fight the hardest and keep a military base open, win elections in the south. The government / military provides "welfare" to how many towns that would've never existed without a base nearby.
How many CAC soldiers had absolutely no prospects before they enlisted and made something of themselves.

You can get a F150, a little house and settle down with your HS sweetheart...no effort required. While I gotta hustle sun up to sun down just to get my foot in the door then work twice as hard to keep the little I got.
