Did you know you cannot fly on a plane without a federal i.d.?

Man shit is crazy. Beginning May 3rd, next year, regular state driver's licenses won't be enough anymore to verify identity for flying in the U.S. I just got a new driver's license, but to qualify for one that also counts as a federal i.d. I need my birth certificate, ssn card, and two pieces of mail with my address on it.

Did you know all this already?

Yeah that is fairly new I remember when I renewed a few years ago they told me. To get the new one for flying it cost a dollar or two more.

All I know is my Texas driver’s license has a gold star on it which identifies it as adequate. Just happened when I renewed it. But I I am also PreCheck qualified with a known traveler‘s number. Amazing how much time that saves at the security line. So they have my fingerprints and everything so what the fuck do I care?

It's going to be A LOT of pissed off flyers when this shit starts.

The videos of passengers throwing fits will be a regularity.

I lost my social security card years ago. I tried to request a new one online, but I have to go in person. That's going to be a rigmarole. Then I got to go back to the B.M.V. The B.M.V. has to mail new driver's licenses instead of printing them while you wait. So that's going to be another rigmarole.

I feel sorry for all the people who are going to try to make last minute travel arrangements who don't know about this new law.

Yeah, they announced (The federal government) would start putting this into practice a few years ago!!!

Are you talking about Real ID? This isn't a "federal ID"

Most state drivers' license has been compliant with Real ID this for years already.
My understanding is that real I.D.'s are federal law compliant. However, a real i.d. is different from a regular i.d. : you have to provide more documents and go through more steps, to get one.

Like I said, I just renewed my drivers license a few weeks ago and got it in the mail. It's not a real i.d., though, and next year I won't be able to use it to fly.

Real ID, playa. And yes, you need all that shit. As someone mentioned COVID postponed the start of the program. I got my shit last October looking crazy with all these damn pieces of paper: birth certificate, passport/license, vehicle insurance cards via my cellphone app...

***Edit: maybe it was my car insurance bill via the app. I remember using my phone for something because I was 1 piece of identification short and a brotha was scrambling trying to find something, lol

REAL ID. This is old news. Anyone that wants to fly within the states needs a passport or a REAL ID. Just update your license. Got mine last year.

It was announced back during the Obama administration as part of the Patriot Act first enacted after 9/11.

It was originally to go into effect October 2020, but Trump pushed it out one year due to the pandemic and Biden pushed it out last year.

If you didn’t know about it, either you are 18 years old or you don’t pay attention to news that directly affects you.

I don't know why it is such a hassle for me. I might have spelled my mother's maiden name wrong, or got something wrong with my dad's full name. I know he had his middle name legally changed, I suspect that's why.

Yep it's the new real ID and enhanced ID. Double check tho cause the Federal government just changed if you need your ssn card if they can look up your number online.

some states have a star on the drivers license which is also acceptable.
i know my old license and state ID didnt have the star, but when i renewed it....i noticed the star in the right corner of the DL.
i know in Alabama they put the stars on the IDs and DLs there too.

Real ID has been around for a couple of years and the absolute deadline was 2020 but COVID postponed that. Basically your State ID has to have some compliant seal on it. The hustle is that at least in DC, it was like $20 extra to get it before it was mandatory.
Right. I got mines like 10 years ago in DC.

You'll soon need a Real ID to travel domestically. Here's what that means

Starting on May 7, all domestic travelers in the United States must have a state-issued ID card or drivers license that complies with a standard known as a Real ID. The IDs are more secure and harder to counterfeit.

Nevada residents urged to prepare for May 7 Real ID deadline

If you plan to fly or enter a federal facility after that date, you’ll need a Real ID or another approved form of identification. However, many are still unsure about the process and the required documents.
