Who’s Getting Rich Off of Hamilton? Everybody!

How does a bastard, orphan, son of a whore and a Scotsman, dropped in the middle of a forgotten spot in the Caribbean, by providence impoverished in squalor, make a rich man of Lin-Manuel Miranda's father? To find the answer, all you have to do is readTHR's reporting on the finances ofHamilton, which recently paid off its $12.5 million capitalization after less than a year on Broadway. Now that that's happened, a bunch of people and institutions associated with the show are about to get paid. Lin-Manuel Miranda's father, Luis A. Miranda, for example, gets one percent of the profits for serving as the show's "political consultant."

The Public Theater, where Hamilton began, gets five percent, up from the one percent of the gross it got previously. Lin-Manuel himself gets three percent of the profits, on top of his fee for playing the title role and the royalties he gets for writing the whole damn thing himself. (Ron Chernow gets his own cut out of Miranda's royalties.)

To give you a sense of the scale, Hamilton reportedly pulls in around $1.5 million a week, with overhead running more than half a million. Give a toast to the newly not-poor of them!

Focus and concentration pays off in the end. Do you remember the name of that documentary by any chance? I'd like to check that out.

I asked this before but I find it VERY interesting that there is NEVER bootleg of Broadway shows online?

they show recordings all the time on the news, specials and eventually on PBS

but I have NEVER seen a show like The Lion King Les Mis Phantom of the Opera etc leaked on line.

you would think in THIS day and age it would be quite prolific especially with the astronomical ticket prices.

Announced during theTelevision Critics Association Press Tour (TCA) today, PBS will air "Hamilton's America," a feature film documentary taking audiences behind-the-scenes of Lin-Manuel Miranda's critically-acclaimed, award-winning stage production, "Hamilton."

The documentary will follow Miranda, his crew and cast during the two years leading up to the musical's Broadway opening, and will air as part of PBS' "Great Performances" series in the fall of this year.

Produced by RadicalMedia, per the press release, "Hamilton's America" combines interviews with experts and prominent personalities, new footage of the production in New York, and cast-led expeditions to DC, Philadelphia and New York. Audiences will sit with Miranda as he composes songs in Aaron Burr’s Manhattan bedroom. They’ll take a trip to Virginia with Chris Jackson – the African American actor who portrays George Washington – and watch him place a wreath on Washington’s grave, as he discusses the difficulty of grappling with our founders’ legacy of slavery. Back in New York, Miranda and Leslie Odom, Jr. – who plays Aaron Burr – visit the Museum of American Finance to get their hands on some 19th-century dueling pistols and stage a quick re-enactment.

“PBS is thrilled to give viewers an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at this sensational - and sold out - Broadway musical,” said Beth Hoppe, Chief Programming Executive and General Manager, General Audience Programming, PBS. “With this level of access to Lin-Manuel Miranda and his team, PBS continues to live up to our mission of giving viewers a backstage pass and a front row seat to the arts.”

“Since we presented ‘In the Heights: Chasing Broadway Dreams’ in 2009, we’ve been taken by Lin-Manuel’s unique talents and we’re honored to collaborate with him again on ‘Hamilton’s America’,” said David Horn, Executive Producer, “Great Performances.” “The film will offer audiences a fascinating point of view as we witness first-hand Lin’s inspiration and creative process, as well as the lasting impact of Alexander Hamilton on our society today.”

“On behalf of the entire Hamilton cast and creative team, many of whom are 'In The Heights' alumni, we are overjoyed to be returning to PBS in partnership with RadicalMedia with this project,” said Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creator, writer and star of 'Hamilton.' “We invited filmmaker Alex Horwitz into ‘the room where it happened’ a few years ago, and he’s captured parts of this journey no one has seen. We can’t wait to share it, thanks to PBS.”

Based on Ron Chernow’s biography, "Hamilton" opened on Broadway on August 6, 2015 to rave reviews and unprecedented advance ticket sales.

Lin-Manuel Miranda expected to leave 'to' on July 9
BY JOE DZIEMIANOWICZ

Lin-Manuel Miranda's busy slate of projects awaits when he leaves his megahit "Hamilton."
(CHARLES SYKES/CHARLES SYKES/INVISION/AP)
noted the Hollywood Reporter. "There is nothing to confirm at this time," Miranda's press rep told the Daily News.

Miranda is personally up for three Tonys onJune 12 — for his score, book and performance. He's already won a Pulitzer for the show. But his contract for rap- and hiphop-infused musical about founding father Alexander Hamilton expires July 9. He’s then expected to leave the sold-out show pulling in $1.6 million a week at the Richard Rodgers Theatre to move on to other writing and acting projects.

And he’s got plenty of them.

‘Hamilton’'s Lin-Manuel Miranda may not speak live at Tonys

As recently as last month, Miranda, 36, was putting finishing touches on music for on the animated Disney movie, “Moana.” He was recently cast alongside Emily Blunt to star in Disney’s “Mary Poppins Returns,” set for release on Dec. 25, 2018. And the Weinstein Co. has picked up film rights for Miranda’s 2008 Tony-winning best musical “In the Heights.”

Like other "Hamilton" stars, Leslie Odom, Jr., who plays Aaron Burr, has been weighing options about staying with the show.

Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda makes it to wall at Sardi's

Like Miranda, other principal cast members’ contracts for “Hamilton” end July 9. Last month Tony nominee Leslie Odom Jr., told the News that he was unsure how long he would stay in his role of Aaron Burr, who shot Hamilton in a duel. One of the contributing factors had to do with finances. Principal actors made a profit-sharing deal with the show’s producers in April.

“There's been a lot of healing at the Richard Rodgers,” Odom said. “Quite frankly, we didn't know how things would work out with the royalties. The producers went a long way to make the profit sharing happen. I'm open to whatever's best for this glorious show.”

Lin-Manuel Miranda Pens New York TimesOp-Ed After Somehow Conquering Sleep

07-lin-manuel-miranda.w529.h529.jpg

Jeez, he’s already doing so much. Is it really fair for us to sit back and let Lin-Manuel Miranda conquer the robots for us too? TheHamilton creator wrote an impassioned New York Times op-ed today tackling the use of ticket bots by third-party brokers, the result of which is ticket scarcity and astronomical prices. Ticket bots are already illegal, but seeing as how people are willing to trade one or more of their internal organs for tickets toHamilton and other hot shows, civil penalties have yet to slow down their use. Miranda supports local politicians in their efforts to establish criminal penalties for ticket brokers who knowingly resell tickets snatched up by bots, and to create more markup-price transparency. Says Miranda, “I want the thousands of tickets for shows, concerts and sporting events that are now purchased by bots and resold at higher prices to go into the general market so that you have a chance to get them. I want theatergoers to be able to purchase tickets at face value at our box office and our website, rather than on a resale platform.” Miranda also employs a loose analogy to the gambling men of Guys and Dolls, which is honestly above and beyond.

Stop the Bots From Killing Broadway

THEY call you Lady Luck, but there is room for doubt” — Frank Loesser, “Guys and Dolls”

Almost a year ago, the curtain rose for “Hamilton” at the Richard Rodgers Theater. Since that day, everyone involved in the production has had many wonderful experiences to cherish — from the performance when we hosted President Obama and the first lady to the heartfelt stories we hear from theatergoers outside the stage door.

But we share one regret: the lack of availability of tickets means that many people who want to see “Hamilton” can’t. Part of this problem, as it is for many Broadway shows, is simple economics: The demand for tickets exceeds the number of seats in the theater on a given night.

But there is another significant factor exacerbating this problem that is unfair to customers, and that lawmakers in Albany can help us solve.

Many would-be customers complain that tickets to their favorite shows, concerts and sporting events are sold out within minutes — if not seconds — after they are posted for sale.

So how is it that you can’t get through to Ticketmaster on the phone or online, and yet resale sites like StubHub or Vivid Seats instantly have tickets available at sky-high prices? Are they luckier than you or your neighbor? Can they dial faster? Is StubHub the lucky Sky Masterson to your hapless Nathan Detroit?

No. The issue is the widespread use of special automated software called “ticket bots” by third-party brokers, which Eric T. Schneiderman, the New York attorney general, discovered earlier this year during an investigation. His findings are detailed in a report called “Obstructed View: What’s Blocking New Yorkers From Getting Tickets.” Brokers use bots to connect at lightning speed and gobble up as many hot tickets as possible, then offer them on legal resale sites like StubHub.

The investigation confirmed that tens of thousands of tickets to New York events are acquired each year using such software. Brokers who buy tickets using bots substantially mark up the prices — sometimes by more than 1,000 percent — yielding enormous profits.

Incredibly, ticket bots are already illegal under New York law and their use is subject to civil penalties (the attorney general recently announced that large fines were leveled against six brokers). But the markup on resale tickets is so lucrative, earning brokers millions of dollars per year, that they happily risk prosecution and treat civil penalties as the cost of business.

To use another metaphor from “Guys and Dolls”: Big Julie is using loaded dice, and you and I do not have a chance. Tickets are taken out of circulation, punishing people who can’t afford to pay more than face value. The extra money doesn’t provide a better concert or show experience for you, the fan. Instead, it goes straight to the broker’s bottom line.

The problem will persist until we strengthen the existing law and make this recurrent illegal behavior a felony. In late April, Mr. Schneiderman proposed a bill to address rampant illegal use of bots.

In response, the full State Senate unanimously passed a bill making it illegal for ticket brokers to knowingly resell or offer to resell tickets purchased using bots and requiring ticket resale platforms like StubHub to post the price they paid for tickets on their platform so that consumers can easily see the markup price. Most important, since brokers don’t seem dissuaded by fines, the bill creates criminal penalties, including imprisonment, for repeat offenders.

The New York Assembly is discussing these measures for a similar bill sponsored by Marcos Crespo, a Democratic assemblyman from the Bronx. The Assembly should pass the bill and Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo can sign it into law.

I want the thousands of tickets for shows, concerts and sporting events that are now purchased by bots and resold at higher prices to go into the general market so that you have a chance to get them. I want theatergoers to be able to purchase tickets at face value at our box office and our website, rather than on a resale platform. And if you do go to a resale platform for tickets, I want the markup you must pay to be clearly displayed.

Most of all, I want you to be there when the curtain goes up. You shouldn’t have to fight robots just to see something you love.

You Will Have a Slightly Better Chance at Winning the Hamilton Lottery Next Year

In an effort to cut down on online ticket scalping, Hamilton is changing its pricing structure:
The show's producers tell the New York Times that they're doubling the number of tickets available in the show's lottery, as well as dramatically raising the prices for the best seats.

Starting in January 2017, the Broadway sensation will set aside 46 seats for each performance — up from 21 — to be won in the daily Ham4Ham lottery, which is 25 more seats the scalpers can't get.

In other words, you will literally have better luck next year at winning the Hamilton lottery (unless, of course, this news prompts even more people to enter).

Now you have two snowballs' chance in Hell of getting tickets!

While the lottery tickets will still be in the show's first two rows, tickets in the center orchestra will now go for $849, a record for the most expensive seat on Broadway.

This, too, is meant to tamp down on secondary sales: By raising the face value of tickets up to what they go for on the black market, producers hope to cut into scalpers' profit margins. Together, producer Jeffrey Seller tells the Times, the changes are "taking from the rich to give to the poor," while also making more money for the show's investors. Alexander Hamilton himself would be proud.
