Facebook Allowed Some Tech Companies To Read And Delete Users’ Private Messages: NYT

Facebook reportedly gave some of the world’s largest tech companies access to users’ personal data, including allowing some firms to read and delete users’ private messages and obtain contact information through their friends, without users’ knowledge or consent.

The New York Times on Tuesday detailed how Facebook, through data-sharing “business partnerships,” shared and traded user data with more than 150 companies, including Amazon, Microsoft, Netflix, Spotify, Yahoo and the Russian search engine Yandex.

These partnerships, the oldest of which dates to 2010 and all of which were active in 2017, “effectively exempt[ed] those business partners” from Facebook’s usual privacy rules, the Times reported, citing hundreds of pages of internal Facebook documents.

Microsoft’s Bing search engine, for example, was reportedly allowed to see the names of nearly all Facebook users’ friends without their consent; Spotify, Netflix and the Royal Bank of Canada were able to read, write and delete users’ private messages; and Amazon, Microsoft and Sony could obtain users’ contact information through their friends.

Yahoo and Yandex reportedly retained access to Facebook user data even after such access was supposed to have been halted. And Facebook gave Apple the power to see Facebook users’ contacts and calendar entries even in cases where users had disabled all data sharing.

In all, the data of “hundreds of millions of people” were sought monthly by applications made by these Facebook business partners, according to the Times. Some of these partnerships reportedly remain in effect today.

Responding to the Times’ report, Facebook, whose privacy policies have come under intense scrutiny in recent months, said it had neither violated users’ privacy agreements nor a deal with the Federal Trade Commission that made it illegal for the social network to share user data without explicit consent.

“None of these partnerships or features gave companies access to information without people’s permission, nor did they violate our 2012 settlement with the FTC,” Konstantinos Papamiltiadis, Facebook’s director of developer platforms and programs, said in a Tuesday blog post.

Facebook’s primary argument was that it did not need explicit consent from users because its business partners, which it refers to as “integration partners,” were “functionally extensions of Facebook itself,” Times reporter Nick Confessore explained.

Still, Facebook acknowledged that it’s “got work to do to regain people’s trust.”

“Protecting people’s information requires stronger teams, better technology, and clearer policies, and that’s where we’ve been focused for most of 2018,” Steve Satterfield, Facebook’s director of privacy and public policy, said in a statement, noting that partnerships “are one area of focus.”

Papamiltiadis said most of the features described in the Times’ article are “now gone.”

At least two U.S. senators have called for more federal oversight in the wake of the Times report.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) lambasted Facebook’s reported data sharing as “unacceptable” and called for Congress to pass the data privacy bill that she and Republican Sen. John Kennedy of Louisana introduced in April.

Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) said he was angered by the report.

“It has never been more clear. We need a federal privacy law. They are never going to volunteer to do the right thing. The FTC needs to be empowered to oversee big tech,” he tweeted.

An early investor of Facebook told the Times that “no one should trust Facebook until they change their business model.”

“I don’t believe it is legitimate to enter into data-sharing partnerships where there is not prior informed consent from the user,” Roger McNamee said.

Facebook did not immediately respond to HuffPost’s request for comment.

Public is too addicted to “likes” and emojis and the ability to be self-directed celebrities with hundreds of “followers” to give a fuck. It’s basically the equivalent of being a fiend except the drug is digital; is legal, and you can access it 24/7/365. If you remember the pre Social Media days, look at folks you knew befor SM popped off, and then they got on it, and look at them now; a lot are attention whores and status seekers in ways that are completely unnecessary and unbecoming of a supposedly mature adult.

I will say until the end of my time; the “status” update feature on fb altered human psychology and behavior moreso than few other inventions EVER.

Folks thought I was just hating when I said FUCK FACEBOOK. I have not uploaded a personal picture to Facebook since 2011 after reading their updated TOS informing me I no longer owned my pictures or anything else I posted on their platform. Fuck that shit. You all can keep using that shit. Fuck around and find out you are the face of Herpes medication ads in some place like Indonesia.

Damn right.

Facebook is bad enough, but the whole concept of social media is toxic. It makes crazy opinions seem normal and people that disagree with them into enemies, even if they were friends long before Facebook happened.

it also encourages people to compare the worst parts of their life with the best parts of somebody else's. This creates envy and even more division.

Worst of all, it defines human beings by a single thought or moment no matter how out of character that instance might be.

Social media was sold to us as a way to bring people together. All it really does is isolate and tear people apart

:):roflmao::roflmao2: I been telling Facebook fools for years to leave that bullshit alone, but no over 50% of Facebook users knew nothing about computers or online culture but Facebook made it so easy for them so they willingly leaped onto this platform
and divulged all their information, thoughts and feelings to these crackaz with no clue of the backed agreements or the terms of
use involved.

Good for everyone who is addicted to that bullshit and this story trust is not the 1/2 of the bullshit facebook is into with your

At the end of the day, most of you trust sensitive personal information to a cracka kid from Harvard who was a complete nerd social geek, who stole these twin crackas algorithm and derived this platform from is this chick hot or not POP-UP spam bot :smh:

Social media wasn't the problem, humans were... I can bring 100 diff people into an empty basement that is 1500 sq feet separately and tell them you can do whatever you want in here for the next 6 months for free... Only a small select percentage would utilize it to its full ability and probably generate shitloads of bread of it, while others might use it for bad, or waste it potential... An empty basement in 1 person eyes could be turned into a rental space for diff events, another person some sort of lounge, another person might air bnb the space, somebody else use it for webcam, somebody else might turn it into a YouTube channel blog, another radio station, another place to manufacture clothes, etc... While others will turn it into criminal activities, or others juss some random place to smoke or bullshit... The criminal activities and people who use it for bullshit represent majority of social media users while all the creative people represent the small percent.. That is reality of social media

What it does is allow the govt and other entities to have a detailed dossier on everyone -that each person created themselves and that each user continuously updates.

It being free of charge to use is a red flag.

Suppose you told those 100 people "here's a free 1/8th of some premium bud and I'll give you another free 1/8th for every person you invite over." All of a sudden that small select percentage gets a lot smaller. Does that happen because they're lazy and wasteful, or because you've incentivized them not to use it properly?

Facebook is no different. They purposely ignored or actively encouraged fake news, Russian bots, and white supremacist propaganda in order to cause heated debates. These debates increased user engagement which allows them to sell their ads for more. It also creates emotional states in which people reveal hidden parts of their personalities which Facebook also sells to advertisers. It's a data mining virus on steroids.

If you can use Facebook as a tool to make money then more power to you. Just keep in mind that it's the opposite of what it was intended for.

I'm trying to explain to you some people can look at an empty room and make endless possibilities of progressive activities they can do with it...while most juss see an empty room and will pretty much do nothing productive with it...that's social media in a nutshell... You could use it to make money, inform share knowledge, connect individuals to combine to a stronger force etc... But most juss bullshit on there

But who really gets to do that?

I went on Facebook to promote a NYE party at a cannabis club. Ad gets pulled
A friend of mine posted a CNN article critical to Israel. Post gets pulled
Tariq Nasheed posted about Black empowerment. Account gets suspended.

Meanwhile white supremacists get full reign to promote and organize a Charlottesville type rally in Golden Gate Park, less than an hour from Facebook's headquarters.

So no, social media is not just a room with endless possibilities. It's a tightly monitored cage where all ideas are monitized by the jailers, suppressed, and then used to turn us against each other.

With that said though, in the past 15 years I have used knowledge from BGOL to get better at my desktop publishing job, learn about bit torrent, pick a college, get music and occasionally even bullshit. The difference is that BGOL was specifically designed for this purposes. Facebook was designed for the opposite.

Like I said, if you can make money off it more power to you. I have a professional Facebook and Instagram page for my DJ business but have found that despite hundreds of dollars worth of ads none of their promotions have gotten me shows, brought anyone to my existing shows, and have brought zero results for hiring dancers, bartenders, or roadies (usually because the ads get rejected for one frivilous reason or other). Aside from Thumbtack, Facebook and Instagram have the worst ROI of any promotion I've ever done. The only reason I even keep the pages open is to improve the SEO ranking on my website.

Despite this, my business is steadily growing through a booking agency, street promoters, word of mouth and repeat customers. My greatest sales tool are the online mixes that I post on my site. When I repost them on Facebook or Instagram nobody gives a shit except my mom.

Maybe you lack marketing skills.. Not insulting you.. You can give 100 people the ability to make a commercial to sell a product for free and guess what not everybody will make a convincing commercial that make people want to buy the product... Juss think nobody gave a fuck or even thought of a patty pie until that gay dude made that vid singing while eating it...literally millions of dollars worth of pie sold within a week... Think a dude doing a free vid singing help push those pies better than Wal-Mart and Pattie labell marketing team... good to hear you still getting pushed in other ways , word of mouth is huge...Let me show you a cook that make bread pushing his product on social media for free

It's a nice size movement of people taking advantage of social media to promote their products and services

You may be right about my marketing skills. Part of what makes it difficult is that unlike most outfits I don't take pictures at private gigs, don't hire other DJs, and don't focus on rich white wedding clients (though I'll gladly play for them if they ask). My service rewrites the rules so the marketing needs to reflect that.

Right now my sales approach goes like this. The agency alerts me about a customer, I reply to that customer ASAP including price, deposit, and services provided. once they check my quote I'll follow up with a personal email 24 hours later which includes a link to my website and mixtapes. Usually it's these mixtapes, plus my five star agency reviews, will seal the deal. They pay the deposit, I send them a contract, they send me their timeline and music list and I reherse the fuck out of it until it sounds second nature come showtime. Usually get hired on one out of every 5-10 gigs I quote.
