FOR FORK'S SAKE! Bill de Blasio commits major faux pas, uses cutlery to eat his pizza

De Blasio's method is not the way a New Yorker eats pizza, said the owner of Staten Island's "Goodfellas Pizza," but the mayor said using a knife and a fork is how they do it in Italy.

The mayor of New York City eats his pizza like a tourist.

Mayor de Blasio on Friday traveled to Staten Island for a lunch meeting at a famous pizza joint — and raised eyebrows by eating his slice with a knife and a fork.

De Blasio’s use of cutlery, rather than New York’s tried-and-true folding method, put him in the minority at a table of ten small business owners and locals. Nearly everyone else used their hands, including a 103-year-old man who was invited to meet the mayor.

Before de Blasio showed his reluctance to go with the fold, the talk at “Goodfellas Pizza” — a slice haven favored by ex-mayor Rudy Giuliani — had been mostly about how the new mayor will help small businesses.

But de Blasio’s pie-eating technique was a turning point in the pizza summit — and became a sizzling hot topic among politicos on Twitter.

“Ya know, I think he’s just trying to be polite,” said Goodfellas’ owner Scot Costentino. “We’ll talk to him on the side about that.”

“All New Yorkers eat their pizza with their hands,” Costentino said.

But Biagi Settepani, an Italian-American who owns three bakeries, said the mayor was doing it the way it’s done in Italy.

“It’s the Italian way,” he said.

Asked about his affinity for the fork-and-knife method, de Blasio, who was raised in Massachusetts, agreed with Settepani.

“In my ancestral homeland, it is more typical to eat with a fork and knife,” the mayor said. “I've been to Italy a lot and I picked up the habit for certain types of pizza.”

De Blasio said the knives and forks come out when the pizza is overloaded with toppings.

He had three slices at Goodfellas — one margarita-style that was loaded with roasted peppers, basil, Italian sausage, smoked mozzarella, and Reggiano cheese.

There may have been a bunch of toppings, but at one point de Blasio put down the cutlery and used his hands to take a few bites before going back to his trusty knife and fork.

However, New Yorkers who don’t approve of non-folders would probably have appreciated the way he downed his dessert, an overstuffed cannoli.

He scarfed down the cannoli, and licked his fingers.

As iconic pizzeria reacts to de Blasio’s ultimate fork-up, The News shows you the proper way to down a pizza

As seen at Joe's Pizza in Greenwich Village, you eat a slice with your hands after folding it in half. Don't ask for a knife and fork. They don't have any. Follow these simple steps and fuhgeddabout the rest.

He's just days into his first term in office but Mayor Bill de Blasio's public eating habits are already being described as "embarrassing" to the city.

After he was photographed using a knife and fork to dig into a slice of pizza on Friday the Daily News visited Joe's Pizza in Greenwich Village to review how to correctly eat a New York slice.

For starters, don't ask for a knife and fork. At Joe's, for instance, they don't have any.
Sal Vitale, the grandson of the owner and de facto manager of Joe's Pizza, hoists a pie at Joe's Pizza at 7 Carmine St. in Greenwich Village. Vitale says only tourists ask for cutlery to eat their pizza.

"You grab it, you fold it, you eat it, and you walk. Everybody's in a rush in New York and that's the way to eat a New York slice," the owner's grandson, Sal Vitale, said before taking a bite.

"Tourists will sometimes ask for knives and forks. We tell them to fold it," he shrugged with a smile.

Mayor Bill de Blasio created quite a scene on Friday after he was photographed using cutlery to eat his pizza during a lunch meeting in Staten Island.

And Vitale should know how. His grandfather is Joe Pozzuli, a Naples-born immigrant who first opened a pizzeria in Boston before settling in New York.

So where exactly is de Blasio's New York State of mind?

According to Joe's, and many of the New Yorkers and tourists alike seen packing the pizzeria on a rainy Friday afternoon, he's left it all behind.

"Eat a pizza the real way! Don't be prissy about it," Kelsey Brykman, 24, reacted to the mayor's use of silverware during her visit from Rhode Island.

"It's part of the fun. Not only the food you eat but the way you eat it can be more fun than others," said Ines Kerzan, 27, who's lived in the city for five years.

Angela Byers, visiting from Minnesota with her two siblings, was similarly shocked by the mayor's style of eating insisting, "I would never use a knife and fork."

"No," her sister Sheila Byers quickly chimed.

"It sounds like a Seinfeld episode!" Angela laughed, perhaps reminiscing on an episode when George Costanza chows down on a Snickers bar with a knife and fork.

"If you're a New Yorker, you don't use a knife and fork," summed up Vitale who called the mayor's behavior "embarrassing."

"If you have to get down and dirty with it, don't worry. Fold it right in half, hold it like that. That's how you eat a slice. Bill de Blasio what are you doing over there?"

Jon Stewart Burns Bill de Blasio On Pizzagate

BY Celeste Katz

He got himself into it with a knife and fork -- and the media's still eating it up with a spoon.

Jon Stewart went after Mayor de Blasio's Pizzagate scandal on Comedy Central's "The Daily Show" Monday night, teeing off on the big guy's mind-blowing Jan. 10 food faux pas: "De Blasio! ... You're supposed to be championing the middle class. Two weeks into your term, and we catch you eating pizza a la Trump?!? And you call yourself a radical socialist bent on destroying New York City."

"Look, I understand there is a learning curve to being mayor, but here is lesson No. 1: Learn how to eat your city's signature dish. If you were mayor of Philadelphia, would you eat a cheesesteak with a knife and fork? If you were mayor of Buffalo, would you eat Buffalo wings with a knife and fork?"

Stewart -- who himself had something of an episode during the episode -- wasn't buying into Hizzoner's "ancestral homeland" schtick about Italians deploying cutlery to dispatch their pizza.

"Admittedly, your predecessor Bloomberg did not eat it with his hands. He would usually have an assistant cut it up and chew it and then feed it to him like a baby bird. But you are not that. You're a man of the people. EAT LIKE ONE!"

Fork that Mayor de Blasio used to eat pizza on display, to be auctioned at Goodfella's

The owners of the Staten Island pizza eatery have the infamous fork displayed as 'evidence,' and say people have been stopping by to snap pictures of the cutlery. Co-owner Marc Cosentino says he hopes de Blasio will attend a charity fundraiser where the fork will be auctioned.

He said he planned to cooperate with any authorities investigating the mayor’s improper pizza-eating technique.

“Maybe the new police commissioner will want to come by and inspect the evidence,” he said.

Ultimately, he hoped de Blasio might return to the scene of the crime for a charity fundraiser where the fork would be auctioned off.

Bill de Blasio sprinkles coconut on pizza, eats it crust-first in bizarre stunt to promote Kamala Harris

What a weird-dough!
Former Mayor Bill de Blasio chowed down — crust-first — on a piece of coconut-sprinkled pizza in a hard-to-stomach video stunt promoting Kamala Harris’ bid for president on social media Thursday.
In a cheesy call-back to the viral ridicule he received for eating pizza with a fork in 2014, de Blasio is shown dumping a bag of dried coconut shavings on a piece of cheese pizza with a furrowed brow, according to footage he posted on X.

The 63-year-old politician-turned-academic then flips the slice around and eats it backwards — in an absolutely coconuts apparent attempt to catch the internet’s attention — as he sits in a restaurant.

“I am hungry. I will eat pizza today,” he wrote under the post — made to promote “Paisans for Kamala,” a virtual event that will feature Italian-American stars and politicians this weekend.

De Blasio hopes the saucy throwback drums up buzz for the event, which will feature actors Steve Buscemi, Marisa Tomei, Lorraine Bracco, John Turturro and others.
Politicians such as Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Congressman John Garamendi and Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro will also appear at the virtual dinner.

The "forkgate" incident with Mayor de Blasio was a classic example of how a simple mistake can turn into a media sensation, especially in a city as passionate about its food as New York. Jon Stewart's playful take on the situation during de Blasio's appearance on The Daily Show was a brilliant way to address the faux pas while also poking fun at the seriousness with which some people treated it.

Stewart’s comedic lesson in pizza etiquette not only lightened the mood but also allowed de Blasio to engage with the public in a more relatable way. The juxtaposition of eating pizza with hands while joking about former Mayor Bloomberg’s soda ban added another layer of humor and connected it to broader discussions about governance and city life.

Moreover, the conversation about de Blasio's policies, like universal pre-K and changes to stop-and-frisk, shifted the focus from the pizza mishap to substantive issues affecting New Yorkers. This blend of humor and serious discussion is what makes shows like The Daily Show impactful—they provide a platform for politicians to connect with the public in a way that's both entertaining and informative.

Overall, the segment was a great reminder of the importance of not taking ourselves too seriously, even when it comes to our beloved pizza!
