Disney is readjusting its release calendar once again.
The studio announced Thursday that it has officially unset 20th Century titles Free Guy and Death on the Nile, both of which were previously scheduled to hit theaters in December. No new release dates have been announced.
Free Guy and Death on the Nile were two of the studio's last scheduled theatrical releases for 2020. Disney has already moved many of its high-profile titles (like Black Widow and West Side Story) from 2020 to 2021, while others have been reshuffled to debut on its streaming service Disney+ instead (like Mulan and the upcoming Soul).
Free Guy, which stars Ryan Reynolds as a video game NPC who gains sentience, was initially scheduled to hit theaters in July, before the ongoing coronavirus pandemic pushed that date back.

Kenneth Branagh's Death on the Nile, the sequel to 2017's Murder on the Orient Express, has also been delayed several times. It continues the adventures of Agatha Christie's detective Hercule Poirot (played by Branagh) and also stars Gal Gadot, Armie Hammer, and Letitia Wright.
Moving Free Guy and Death on the Nile means that the list of 2020 theatrical films continues to dwindle, as the ongoing pandemic keeps crowds out of cinemas. Still on the schedule are Universal's The Croods: A New Age(hitting theaters Nov. 25) and Warner Bros.' Wonder Woman 1984 (still scheduled, as of yet, for Dec. 25).

Ryan Reynolds thanks Chris Evans, Hugh Jackman, and more stars for Free Guy cameos

He got by with a little help from his friends.

Now that some of those superstar Free Guy cameos are all over social media, Ryan Reynolds has clearly deemed it a spoiler-safe time to offer public thank you's to some of the many actors who performed cameos in his film, including former Captain America Chris Evans.
Reynolds shared his thanks in an Instagram caption on Tuesday, posting photos of himself with Evans, Channing Tatum, Hugh Jackman, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, and John Krasinski.
"This movie is about friendship," Reynolds captioned the star-studded slideshow. "And friendship is at its simplest, just showing up. While I don't have photos of everyone, here's to all the incredible pals who showed up for this film. #FreeGuy "

Tatum and Evans' pics appear to have been taken on the set of Free Guy, while we'll venture to guess the others are from Reynolds' own (fanboy) archives.
EW recently got the skinny from director Shawn Levy on how several of the cameo-ing actors entered the Free Guy mix, including Evans, who came aboard while the actor was filming his Apple TV+ show Defending Jacob.
"I recall Chris being like, 'Well, I'm really busy, but if you can get me in and out in like 10 minutes, sure. Why not?'" Levy told Romano.
Evans' cameo involved sneaking the actor into a restaurant, where there were black coverings on the windows to keep it extra quiet.
"Chris rolled up, we walked him right into his seat in front of the camera, shot him, hugged it out, and he was on his way in less than 10," Levy said.

Krasinski, Johnson, and Jackman were among the actors who lent their vocal talents to the film.
"While we were editing the movie, we realized that there were several characters who were either in masks or [had] concealed faces or [were] behind a doorway or in a silhouette," Levy told EW of how the idea for voice cameos began. "We started with Hugh Jackman, who's a mutual friend of both of ours."
Over the weekend, Reynolds said Disney was greenlighting a second installment of the film, which follows Guy (Reynolds), a bank teller/non-player character in a video game, who goes to war against the game creator to save his friends from being deleted.
"Aaaannnnd after 3 years messaging #FreeGuy as an original IP movie, Disney confirmed today they officially want a sequel. Woo hoo!! #irony," he tweeted.

Ryan Reynolds fails to impress Mariah Carey with Free Guy-inspired 'Fantasy' lip-sync

But her reaction delighted him anyway.

Ryan Reynolds may be a devout member of the Lambily, but his recent TikTok performance of Mariah Carey's "Fantasy" didn't quite dazzle the pop diva.
Carey made her feelings known this week when she posted a TikTok of her own pairing her lip-sync of "Fantasy" with Reynolds' version.
Carey performs with heart, while Reynolds, in a nod to his new movie Free Guy (which prominently features "Fantasy"), doesn't do anything at the start of his rendition — he has the word "loading" blinking over his head, as his Free Guy character is a video game bot. But when the actor eventually bursts into his lip-sync, complete with a serious face and strong hand choreography, he gets the side-eye from Mimi.

"That wasn't part of the plan!" Carey wrote in her caption.
Reynolds responded on Twitter, writing, "My favorite thing that's ever happened on August 25th," and adding a link to the video. It's worth noting that Aug. 25 is his wife Blake Lively's birthday.

According to Reynolds, "Fantasy" helped inspire him as he worked on Free Guy (he's not just the star of the film, but also an executive producer).
"I got to speak with Mariah and talked to her a little bit about how much of an engine and an agent of progress that this song had been in terms of our creative process and the scripts," Reynolds told Variety. "She's just been awesome about it."

Turns out the fandom goes both ways: Carey and recently tweeted about watching Free Guy nine (?) times in a row.

Free Guy Will Hit HBO Max Before Disney+
Thanks to a distribution deal that predates Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox, Free Guy will go to HBO Max first when it leaves theaters.

BY KELVIN CHILDSPUBLISHED AUG 13, 2021

Although Free Guy is a Disney film, its streaming debut after it concludes its exclusive theatrical run will be on HBO Max, not Disney+, thanks to its origins as a 20th Century Fox property.

During a quarterly earnings call on Aug. 12, Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Chapek said, "We acquired [Free Guy] under a different distribution assumption and set of agreements," as reported by Variety. That included the obligation to release Free Guy exclusively in theaters and then on HBO Max, under the terms of a partnership between the 20th Century Fox film studio and WarnerMedia.

That distribution agreement, which was renewed in 2012 for 10 years, holds even though Disney bought 20th Century Fox and several other assets of parent company 21st Century Fox in 2018. The agreement also prevents Disney from placing Free Guy on Disney+ Premier Access while it is in theaters. "We don't have the degree of freedom to do [a Premier Access release] on Free Guy," Chapek said.

This also affects other pending 2021 20th Century Studios films that Disney has in the pipeline, like Ron's Gone Wrong, The Last Duel and the remake of West Side Story.

Free Guy will have a 45-day window in theaters, but its placement after that is not established -- whether or not it might bypass the typical course of a DVD/Blu-Ray/digital purchase and rental release and go directly to HBO and HBO Max. Only the theatrical release is confirmed, said a Disney spokesperson.

Directed by Shawn Levy from a script by Matt Lieberman and Zak Penn, Free Guy stars Ryan Reynolds as Guy, Jodie Comer as Milly, Joe Keery as Keys, Lil Rel Howery as Buddy, Utkarsh Ambudkar as Mouser and Taika Waititi as Antoine. The film arrives in theaters Aug. 13.

I saw it this weekend too. It was a Very Good movie that could have been Great. Very enjoyable watch without putting to much thought into the meaning of sentient AI/Pop Culture/Social Media. Almost like, they want you comfortable with AI without thinking to much about how its thinking about you.
