Definitely check Google to see if there are any local gyms in your area. Also, check your TV menu guide (or fave download/streaming sites) and record any MMA, boxing, and kickboxing/muay thai events. That's a good way to brush up on the many disciplines out there. Look to see which events are forthcoming from the UFC, Bellator, LFA, One Championship, Lion Fight, etc.

Also ... if you're into podcasts ... here's some good ones to keep in your rotation ...

- Co-Main Event podcast
- Anik and Florian
- MMAJunkie
- The Corner podcast
- UFC Unfiltered
- Anything from the Sherdog Radio Network
- Anything from MMA Nation / Bloody Elbow
- Fights Gone By (Jack Slack)
- Five Rounds with Brett Okamoto
- MMA Analysis
- MMA Oddsbreaker
- Etc.

Some good bases to work on are BJJ, wrestling, and boxing/striking.

Muay thai may be too advanced to start with.

Getting into the sport as in training or watching? If training, you will be weaker in one aspect and strong in the other. I train fully in Muay Thai in at MMA location. Our Muay Thai division don't let people sparr until a year of training. So people start in Mauy Thai and when they get to sparring they will stay for a few months and switch to BJJ. People do this to get the full "MMA experience" and it's weak. When they come to Muay Thai sparring months later while training BJJ, they get washed. Make sure to stay 50/50 with MT and BJJ, you may take longer to progress in BJJ but you will be balance in both.

Make sure you're mentally tough. The physical training is difficult but you can see and quantify that aspect of the training. The mental toughness to me is most important because once you get a little experience under your belt and you start sparring/rolling with people full speed it will challenge you more mentally. Muay Thai and BJJ are excellent places to start. I like BJJ more because most fights end up on the ground.
