Girl sues a public school system for graduating her from high school with honors despite being unable to read or write

Interesting. Being unable to read and write is more of a parental issue than a school one. However, this lawsuit has some validity because there is no way she is supposed to get through elementary or middle school with these deficiencies without teachers passing her along.

Unfortunately, the school system can't fail students because it has nowhere to put them. For example, you can't have 19-year-olds in high school with 13 and 14-year-olds.

The video at this link has more context.

I'm glad she is doing this. This is what I have to deal with sometimes.

Yeah this isn't a shocker at all,I've seen it myself as a student how the education system, the educators and teachers will push students along right on out of the door to boost graduation numbers because that's all the state and government care about. You have good numbers....here's your money.

It's sad and has been going on since forever.

I'm lucky I can read and do whatever but once I realize that I can hustle the teachers who had one foot in the school and the other in retirement I did that all of the time, talk to em,make em laugh and it was an easy "A" but they also knew that I was capable of doing the work and if your not a problem student they'll let you slide right on out the door.

I grad with a regents diploma which doesn't mean shit now because I heard that they don't even have that anymore to help boost grad rates and when I was in school I couldn't really tell the difference

This girl also had dyslexia and claims her teachers yelled at her. I absolutely believe that kids utilize technology to do their work. Critical thinking is not just an afterthought it’s practically ignored. Almost as if it’s on purpose. Schools complicate simple things like multiplication but then want to skip over something fundamental like phonics.

You are no longer allowed to fail students and teachers spend more time trying to break up fights or ignore violence and disruption in schools. And of course all while being paid peanuts. Then you have parents that are oblivious to all this and act surprised if their kid is a bad ass or stupid.

Bottom line is you’ve got to take charge of your child’s education or they will be screwed.

“Aim righting this sew know other person is hurt. You gone sewed weather you like it or knot. I toad my teacher I cane Ried Anne awl she did was role her ize. I will sea you all in court.”

they taught her how to get a lawyer, what da problem is?
When you clicked the thread, what did you think this person would look like?

I knew they were going to be black. DEI, baby.
She got through school using dictations to read for her and programs to write for her. It’s common practice nowadays and many students breeze through school using AI and technology to do their work.
The Atlantic had a story written late last year that said folks at Harvard have never read a book to completion.

Sounds like the school did her a favor, would she rather they not allow her to graduate and no diploma.

I guess, but in class? Schools in this area act like it's a crime for students to have a phone during class. A co-workers kid got weekend detention for calling/texting her in the hallway between classes.

I guess it kind of makes sense. They mentioned the mom tried to get her help. Maybe she was given some type of exception.

UConn is still a shock though. If this isn't just a language barrier, she seems to be getting an unfair advantage over other students.

Oh yeah. And out-of-class assignments, too.

They have multiple devices and group chats where they pass answers. They have AI to write for them when it comes to papers or discussion boards.

If I was to treat students traditionally where I only give paper test and no devices expect a standard calculator, I would easily have an 80% fail rate.

Oh, and she just exposed the college admission system.

If you want your kid to get into a college and get a scholarship. Lie about all the things they’ve done. They not checking behind you. These college admission systems can’t decipher student achievements based on scores because numbers don’t tell you anything about them.

I'm diagnosed with ADHD (specifically ADD thought no longer use that), that shit is no joke.

I used to believe that diagnosis was bullshit until I was actually diagnosed myself as an adult and came to really understand it.

And procrastination. It’s a lot of things and it’s challenging to solve these isn’t if they go untreated for so long.

I can imagine the adjustment for you was refreshing once you understood.

How? With a college you're just a resume.

They aren't having you take reading and writing test.

The procrastination is killer and never goes away.

It was refreshing once I understood it because it explained so many things that I struggled with. I was always relatively intelligent but lacked the focus and discipline in school which I hated myself for. I could never understand why I couldn't lock on and do things instead of waiting until the last minute.

Ironically I work a job that requires an extensive amount of reading so it's still an ongoing struggle but I manage.

Exactly. She got in college not knowing how to read or write.

You do test when you get to see where you are places for general education courses. But other than that, she has shown how flawed the system is, especially with inflated grades.

Depending on what school she went to she probably didn't. They assume you would know based on your transcripts and if you flunk out not knowing, oh well. That's not their responsibility for teaching you what you should have learned in elementary school.

I've only heard of HBCU's doing that.

How did she take the SAT/ACT :dunno:
