Less than a month after Netflix removed Dave Chappelle’s Comedy Central series, Chappelle’s Show, from the platform at the comedian’s request, another streaming network has decided to follow suit. HBO exec Casey Bloys revealed to Variety that after having a dialogue with Chappelle, the decision has been reached to remove Chappelle’s Show from HBO Max before the end of the year. “We had a conversation with Dave. I won’t get into it, but it’s very clear that it’s a very unique and specific and emotional issue he’s got,” Bloys said. “So at the end of the year, at the end of this year, December 31, we’ll also honor his request and take the show down.” Stressing that it’s “clearly an emotional issue” for Chappelle, Bloys added that if the network “can do something that makes him feel better about it, then I’d like to do that.”

In an Instagram video posted on November 24, Chappelle revealed that he had gotten Netflix to remove the series due to his frustrations regarding the original contract he signed for the show, which allegedly includes no payment for Chappelle when ViacomCBS licenses Chappelle’s Show to streaming networks. “They did something just because they thought that I might think that they were wrong. And I do,” he said, regarding Netflix’s decision to remove the show. “I think that if you are fucking streaming that show, you’re fencing stolen goods.”

In the same video, Chappelle called out ViacomCBS (Comedy Central’s parent company) and HBO for continuing to make the show available to stream, singling out HBO in particular for passing on Chappelle’s Show before it was ultimately green-lit by Comedy Central. “They went too far. They said, literally, ‘What do we need you for?’ That’s what they told me as they kicked me out of the office: ‘What do we need you for?’” Chappelle said, looking back on his Chappelle’s Show HBO pitch meeting. “And here we are, all these years later, and they’re streaming the very show that I was pitching to them. So I’m asking them: What do you need me for?”

While Chappelle’s Show will, as of now, still be available to stream on CBS All Access, Chappelle urged his fans in the November Instagram video to not support his show on streaming. “I’m begging you: If you ever liked me, if you ever think there was anything worthwhile about me, I’m begging you, please don’t watch that show,” he said. “I’m not asking you to boycott any network — boycott me. Boycott Chappelle’s Show. Do not watch it unless they pay me.”

‘Chappelle’s Show’ to Be Pulled Off HBO Max at Dave Chappelle’s Request, Casey Bloys Says

By Joe Otterson

HBO Max is honoring a request by Dave Chappelle to remove “Chappelle’s Show” from the streaming service at the end of this year.
Casey Bloys, chief content officer of HBO and HBO Max, made the revelation during the keynote conversation on day one of Variety’s Virtual FYCFest.

“We had a conversation with Dave. I won’t get into it, but it’s very clear that it’s a very unique and specific and emotional issue he’s got,” Bloys told Variety‘s executive editor of TV, Daniel Holloway. “So at the end of the year, at the end of this year, December 31st, we’re going to honor his request and take the show down.”

Chappelle previously got Netflix to take the show which bears his name down as well. In a lengthy video of one of his standup sets posted to Instagram, Chappelle explained that due to the nature of the deal he signed years ago when the show was made, he does not receive any compensation when ViacomCBS licenses it to streamers like HBO Max or Netflix.

“They (ViacomCBS) didn’t have to pay me because I signed the contract,” Chappelle said in the video. “But is that right? I found out that these people were streaming my work and they never had to ask me or they never have to tell me. Perfectly legal ‘cause I signed the contract. But is that right? I didn’t think so either.”

In the same video, Chappelle told the story of how HBO rejected his pitch for the show when he brought it to them before Comedy Central.

“They said, literally, ‘What do we need you for?’ That’s what they told me as they kicked me out of the office, ‘What do we need you for?’” he said.

“And here we are all these years later and they’re streaming the very show I was pitching to them. So I’m asking them, what do you need me for?

comey central gon have to cut that check to dave
Probably not. Dave fucked himself for not signing the deal. It was clearly stated in the new deal how he would be compensated on future platforms. For whatever reason he refused to sign. That was all on Dave.

Who gives a fuck about how they feel or if they give a shit about Dave. Their intent is of no consequence, their acquiescence to his request is all that matters. This is the problem I have with black people, keep wanting love in place of action. Fuck feelings, do !

This is a perfect example of why you need to have complete ownership of your material.

Rza and Lil’ Wayne is gonna learn the hard way.

Unfortunatly, in the long run this is gonna backfire on Dave.

These corporations know that show is money, they will get that shit back on the air and Dave won’t be able to do jack shit until he can get complete ownership of it.

Comedy Central already was paid and still getting paid for the show. At this point, the show could never air again and they won’t care

Here’s something people don’t comprehend.. Comedy Central owns Chappelle show and its content.. 50 yrs from now Dave can die and most of us prob will be dead.. there will be awhole new generation that have no idea what the politics behind the scenes of the show.. the show would air as a comedy classic and people will love and enjoy it without knowing all the drama.. think of shit like lil rascals none of us know about the politics or anything that happen to make that show..it was aired and either you liked it or you didn’t.. but guess what whoever own the content still got paid for having it aired on diff channels.. Comedy Central owns the content so they could just sit on it for decades and let all this controversy die and disappear..than re-release it with no problens.. that right there is the real truth about owning content and having generational wealth.. so it’s not about today, tomorrow, next weekend..the long run is the real story that nobody is thinking of.. so while people may think Dave won ask yourself do you really think big biz gonna let that content become useless and do you think he really won?.. this should be an eye opener about content control and ownership

So then why are they still shopping

It

Around duh?
That is just standard business. You stated they were “losing money”. I was saying that they have already made their money off the show and shelving it would not hurt them

Dave fucked up by not signing that contract. He was on some nigga shit. He now wants them to give up money in good faith. It would be nice if they did but they have no real obligation to do so.

Dave is in a tough spot because he does not want to pay to get his rights back for the show
