I was at Best Buy earlier today looking at digital cameras.

I haven't bought a digital camera before so I'm looking for some general advice as well as people's experiences/history with certain brands. I'm thinking of traveling overseas soon around Thanksgiving so I'll something reliable, easy to use, and around $200 or less.

Also, anyone know good deals/places online to look for digital cameras? Best Buy seemed overpriced.

So far, I've liked the Sony Cyber-Shot ones.

Cosign the Sony Cybershot - got tat Carl Zeiss lens and higher optical zoom than most others ofer for the price. Only downside is having to buy a sony memory stick instead of using SD cards.

You can't go wrong with the Sony Cyber-shot line for personal use. I've had mine for about 7 years and it still works just as well as it did when I first bought it. Sony cameras can take a lot of abuse too(at least the old ones can)!

Yeah - that's the only complaint. I waited around and I was glad I did ... too many of the prices on the 4GB memory stick varied.

Some places wanted $25 - 34, the best price online was $22.

I waited until they had some random sale at http://www.superstore.ca and bought it there for $17. And I got the camera on sale about 2 months prior to that, and waited until it was one of those weeks wherein "YOU SPEND $250, and we give you a $25 gift card incentive." - So I bought my regular groceries (I waited a week to have enough) and then just bought the camera with it, got my $25 gift card (essentially 10%) off and brought in some other from-home coupons and in-store ones (for the grocery items as I always do anyway/anyhow), and put it on my PC Mastercard (which gets points towards free groceries).

Gotta be smart in these fucked-up economic times

SD770 etc...

Canon cameras....easy to use, good reliability, sharp photos

I have a canon and they are good. Get the 10 megapixel. The price went down. It's like 180 bucks.

Yeah - can't go wrong with CANON / NIKON / SONY / FUJI / OLYMPUS.

Just read up on reviews online + at the store websites' wherein people comment on products bought.

Canon Makes a nice camera. I'm using one now. A590 Lot sof features but there is probably a new model.

I knew a guy who advised me against Fuji/Olympus saying they were chinese crap.

Check newegg. They usually have good combo deals on cameras.

So the Cyber-Shot cameras have their own memory sticks?

Is there a downside to that? Just checked amazon and the prices seem reasonable - 4GB for $13.

Alot of cameras will take regular old SD cards for additional memory and such. But that's one of the problems with Sony products ... often they've got "their own" version that you need to get instead. So I bought the camera in late-July and picked up their memory stick in late-September once I was familiar with my camera itself and had taken a couple of hundred shots and practiced how/where I'd be using the device. I think the drawback is that it's a bit pricier (instead of just picking up a standard SD card)? Our Canadian prices are always way steeper too, which sucks. Hell - http://www.sears.ca was asking $34 for the 2GB memory stick at one point. The fuck? You noted you saw the 4GB for $13 in the States, and I bought it "half price" (4GB) for $17 a month and change ago  - Canada is bitchass when it comes to pricing.

first of all, don't buy from Best Buy........got to/order from B&H/Amazon/Adorama.....

and get a Canon, imo they make the best Point and Shoot cameras......if budget isn't much of a concern I'd get a G10/G11...

and don't believe the Megapixel hype, more megapixels don't equal better pictures!!!......get the camera that has the features you want and the best reviews you can find........
