'Mob' of college students attack man in TikTok-inspired trap, police say

The group in Massachusetts chased a man who was falsely accused of being a sexual predator.

Six college students in Massachusetts were accused of luring an active-duty service member whom they falsely described as a sexual predator to their campus, where a group of more than two dozen people chased and assaulted him, authorities said.

One of the students who was charged told police that the plot was modeled on “To Catch a Predator,” NBC’s discontinued program that, during its three seasons, aimed to catch adults seeking to prey on minors using undercover cameras and decoys impersonating underage dates, according to a statement of facts in the case.

“Catch a predator is a big thing on TikTok currently,” the facts document cites the student, Easton Randall, 19, as saying.

Eleven Illinois teens were charged last month in a similar incident that authorities in Mount Prospect, northwest of Chicago, attributed to a “viral social media trend.”

In a statement at the time, the city’s police department did not provide additional details about the trend. Police Chief Michael Eterno pleaded with parents “to take these incidents as an opportunity to talk with their teenage children about the seriousness of actively participating in these types of trends they see on social media.”
At Assumption University, the private Catholic university in Worcester where the six people charged in the plot are students, there was “absolutely” no evidence that the man students accused of being a predator had been seeking sex with a minor, the statement says.

Still, he was chased by what the statement describes as a “mob” of 25 to 30 people — some of them recording the pursuit — and ensnared in a conspiracy carried out by a group of six that includes allegations of “systemic mistreatment, false imprisonment, physical assault and battery and potential character assassination,” according to the university police sergeant who wrote the statement.

...

Home to attend a funeral

According to the statement of facts, the incident on Oct. 1 was initially reported to university officials the next day, when Brainard said a “creepy” Tinder app contact had come to campus looking to meet a 17-year-old girl. She texted a friend — Randall — who chased the person away, according to the statement.

In a subsequent interview with campus police, Brainard reiterated this claim, saying she had been the victim of unsolicited contact, according to the statement.

Campus authorities were later connected to the service member by the Worcester Police Department, which provided a starkly different account.

He told campus police that he had been home to attend his grandmother’s funeral and began messaging with someone on Tinder because he “just wanted to be around people that were happy,” according to the statement.

He and Brainard planned to connect, he told police, and she invited him to meet at a campus alumni hall, according to the statement.

Attacked by a mob

He had been inside the building for a few minutes, the statement says, “when a group of people came out of nowhere and started calling him a pedophile and accusing that he liked 17-year-old girls.”

“He was unable to leave due to being grabbed and held back from leaving,” the statement says. “The subject reported that he was able to break free and ran up the stairs being chased by a group of 25 or more people.”

He told police he was chased to his car, punched in the head and had his car door slammed on him, the statement says. After he was able to flee campus, he dialed police, the statement says.

A review of campus security video detailed in the statement confirmed the victim’s account. The video captured students berating the victim as a sexual predator, recording the pursuit as they chased him and high-fiving one another a few minutes later, after one of the accused was captured slamming the man’s car door on his head, according to the statement.

A review of Tinder messages showed the service member believed he was meeting an 18-year-old, the statement says. The woman's profile indicated she was 18. When officers followed up with Brainard about where the information about an underage girl came from, the statement adds, “she could not answer.”

‘Call police or kick their ass’

Randall told authorities that after having learned that Brainard was messaging with the victim, six students came up with the idea of luring him to campus.

“He reported that it was like the Chris Hansen videos where you ‘catch a predator and either call the police or kick their ass,’” the statement says, referring to the host of “To Catch a Predator.”

The show, which aired from 2004 to 2007, used hidden cameras and people posing as minors in online chat rooms to lure alleged predators to houses where Hansen would confront them. The program did not condone or include any violence.

After a Texas prosecutor who was the subject of one of the show’s investigations died by suicide, his family sued the network for $105 million in 2007. NBC settled the following year for an undisclosed amount and said the matter had been “amicably resolved.”

In his interview with campus police, Randall said he and several others made suggestions about what Brainard should say in her messages to the service member, the statement says. After they lured him to campus, the group then “rallied” others at the college using an alumni group chat — a move that provoked the “rabid response” from the dozens who participated in the event, according to the statement.

Afterward, according to the statement, Randall acknowledged to authorities: “This got out of hand and went bad.”

18 is legal though. It could still be creepy if dude was old, but he's not doing anything illegal.

"Pedophile" is one of the least understood epithets commonly thrown around.

It means someone who is attracted to / has sex with kids. Kids = humans who are pre-pubescent.

The age of consent is usually 16 for a reason. I'm not saying it is right for an adult to be involved with someone that young but it is not pedophilia.

At 18, when someone can move out on their own, vote, go to war, be in porn, etc, it is not even a conversation.

That shit is being pushed hard by feminists. "18 is too young" bullshit.
Yeah, it's odd to be 40 looking at an 18-year-old to date but it's up to those involved

Hold on….

What am I missing….

A 22 year old man went to hook up with a 18 year old?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but there are 22 year old College students Fucking 18 year old college students.

I vaguely remember that being shown in the classic comedy “Animal House”.

And even if he knew she was 17, the response was insane and off-base in every way.

The difference between 17 and 18 is between 1 and 364 days. It could seriously be as little as 1. And no matter how many days, someone that age is not a child and able to consent.

17/18, she is a freshman in college.

17 in majority of states is the legal age of consent.

It does become a issue if she is 17 and still in high school.

17, she is old enough for military service if her parents sign the enlistment papers. So if she was in the military and he was 22, he would not have made any violation as long as there is consent.

Didn’t see the previous thread until now but IMO these are different discussions based on the same story— I didn’t find the TikTok trend aspect interesting and my purpose in starting this thread was a conversation on changing norms around age and relationships.

It would suck to take the time to dig up relevant tweets to start a specific conversation and have it dumped in a thread where nobody will click with that discussion in mind.

I just saw your thread connected to the same story and just wanted to fold it into yours.

Somebody came to me with that "age of consent should be 23" nonsense so I told them

"If you think dating a 22-year-old is gross that's fine. But do you really believe that if a man makes that decision he should be arrested, thrown into a cage where other inmates will beat, stab, and rape him? When he leaves that cage do you think that he should be made to stay up to 50 yards away from any park or school, including the one his "victim" might have been a teacher at? Is that a fair punishment for doing something just because you believe it's gross?"

That was 3 months ago. Still waiting to hear back.

Slightly off topic:
He told campus police that he had been home to attend his grandmother’s funeral and began messaging with someone on Tinder because he “just wanted to be around people that were happy,” according to the statement."
When I read this, I felt it.
When you are going through shit like this, you will do a lot of shit that is out of character to try to keep the grief from setting in.
I remember after one loss, I couldn't watch anything on tv or movies with gun violence in it. I was watching nothing but rom coms and cartoons for about a month.
I was trying to keep that rage monster in a cage and I knew that if I indulged in anything that would set me off, I might lose it. I remember saying the same shit about only wanting to be around people that were happy.
Grief is a powerful emotion. That shit can take you to some really dark places. People will do a lot of things to escape that feeling.

As to this whole situation:
This is why modern feminism is a cancer on society. Its just weaponized victimhood.
Sounds like dude was just trying to hook up with a chick to escape his pain.
Its funny how when women talk about doing it, its all good. Same thing with the consent conversation. The pendulum seems to only swing one way.

I blame Trump. When Obama was in office nobody really cared how old your partner was as long as she was legal.

Then a legitimate sexual predator ran for office and became untouchable. So women organized to go after Harvey Weinstein. The second most powerful sexual predator in the country. Soon, anything that could be possibly described as sexist or sexual assault became grounds for cancellation. Either you were 100% pure or in league with MAGA.

Case in point, look at how many feminist describe old Eminem songs as "far right" or "conservative". They certainly weren't seen that way back when they came out!

It's the same way that "edgy" racism in movies used to be okay. Especially if you were Quentin Tarantino. But those movies hit different when a literal Nazi becomes commander in chief.

In the early 2000s nobody outside of feminist academia held that view though. His music certainly wasn't endorsed by anyone in the Republican party. If anything they were trying to get him shut down and banned to prevent corrupting America's youth.

Now they have people like congressman Matt Gaetz trying to live out their own slim shady fantasies.

For perspective, I bet you could easily find a 30-year-old papers describing how Ice Cube's "Death Certificate" was destructive to the continuing civil rights movement. That doesn't mean it was endorsed by the Klan.
