As I alluded to in a recent thread, I pretty much stopped listening to new music a long time ago.

While I had heard of Nipsey Hussle, I'm totally unfamiliar with his work. And did not at all anticipate or understand the reaction to his death.

So for his fans, I have a question-- What is the essential Nipsey Hussle?

i.e. Did he have an album or a specific mixtape considered as his preeminent piece? What are his 5-10 best/standout songs? Is there an interview or two that particularly conveys his personal philosophy, his path, his achievements/goals, or his personality? What would you point to to explain why he was special or important, or just what he was about?

I'm not gonna check out his whole discography-- I just don't listen to music like that. Maybe over time if it seems good/worthwhile. So what's the best of it, to start with?

Well then you ain’t really interested in hearing what Nipsey really had to say. You might not like the tracks recommended you may find some gems in his other work that others overlooked. But if you are really interested in knowing his impact and influence to understand the impact of his death then take your time and comb over his discography instead of wanting us to cherry picking a few feel good tracks.

I mean, I'll be interested when I see something to be interested in... If this was 20 years ago and someone was asking me about Tupac, I'd probably suggest Me Against The World and All Eyez On Me. Or pretty easily be able to suggest some key songs from Brenda to Dear Mama, etc. I'm just asking for the best way to sample for some understanding, not trying to study for a PhD in his music.

(I'm most interested in the interview part of the question, FWIW.)

Don’t worry about it, it’s too late for you.

Go listen to VL (Victory Lap). Question...are you doing research for the feds? You sound like a snitch.
Yes, I do research for the feds-- My top priority is Nipsey Hussle rap lyrics and the plan is to base the analysis on the most popular songs as identified by BGOL's best & brightest. You can even see my badge number in the Steelwill identity thread.

Why's that?

Because if you weren’t around from the beginning or middle of the grind, you wouldn’t understand.

It’ll just be music to you.

I can’t give an 18-21 year old a Rakim, Nas or Wu-Tang album and expect them to “Get It”.

You missed out, you still may find some of his music that you like though. You just missed out on the emotion, motivation and feeling that he gave through his music.

It’ll just be “Songs” to you.

I never heard Rakim contemporaneously, nor did I ever hear Nas music as it happened before Stillmatic. But it's very easy to appreciate their genius.

I could easily tell a kid "These are the top Nas albums and these are the songs I'd recommend if you wanna know what he's all about." Despite the fact that, to flip the title of a KRS song, I wasn't there.

Everybody keeps comparing Nipsey Hussle to Tupac-- Do you have any earthly idea how many people are fans of Tupac's music and were born after he died?

I'm going to keep it real with you. Nip was a great dude for what he was trying to do in his community but the truth was he wasn't that great of a rapper.

This is my suspicion. And that's okay. Even if he wasn't a great rapper, I'd like to listen to his top 5 songs and get some idea of what his appeal was, since it seems the community stuff had it's foundation in his rap appeal.

I just started listening to his shit post mortem too. He’s decent but goat he’s not.

It won’t stop people from putting him in the top 10 that ever came from L.A. though.

And again, that's fine! Very few people are. I like plenty of rappers who nobody would claim was the best or among them.

It's weird that people are grouping his name with Tupac, Rakim and Nas but nobody's even attempting to say "Here are his best five songs."
