Jesse Williams, who taught high school history in Philadelphia’s public schools before starting his acting career, is on the advisory board for the mobile app Scholly, created by Drexel grad Christopher Gray to simplify finding college scholarships.

Grey’s Anatomy star and Temple University alum Jesse Williams has joined the advisory board of Scholly, a mobile app created by Drexel grad Christopher Gray that simplifies the process of finding college scholarships. Williams will act as the chief brand ambassador, as well as serve on the board of the app.

In 2014, Gray won a $40,000 investment on ABC’s Shark Tank. Now, the Philadelphia-based company has matched students with more than $50 million in school aid. Gray himself won $1.3 million in scholarships to attend Drexel University.

“We’ve all been told that education is the key to success, which is great as long as you have access to it,” Williams said in a video released today, “but the reality is millions of us don’t.”

“Jesse was a former educator here in Philly and that resonated with our mission as he understands first-hand the problem we are trying to help solve,” Gray said. “He is a voice for social change and has a platform to create visibility around issues, including educational access, which we are both passionate about.”

Williams, who taught high school history in Philadelphia’s public schools before starting his professional acting career, said he shares Gray’s “pursuit of making sure as many people as possible can pay for college.”

“Jesse Williams and I are like-minded and share the same views about how to address educational access and paying for college and the sort of tools -- like Scholly -- that can make that happen,” Gray said.....
