Why Daredevil Will Form The Defenders, According To Charlie Cox

It’s been four years since The Avengers assembled for the first time to battle Loki and the Chitauri threat. So much has happened in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since then that it has us wondering: where are The Defenders? The street-level team of crime fighters slowly began to inhabit Marvel’s Netflix properties withDaredevil, and Jessica Jones, which will connect with the upcoming Luke Cage andIron Fist series, but we haven’t seen much progress towards actually teaming these characters up. Thankfully, Charlie Cox is here to explain how Daredevil Season 2 organically leads to the group's formation.
He can’t do this alone. He’s been so adamant about being a lone wolf, about doing it himself, so I think that in order for him to get to The Defenders we needed this second season. We needed to see him be broken individually so that he can - he’s willing to form a team.
So it looks like Matt Murdock (a.k.a Daredevil) will be the one to Nick Fury all of these street-level heroes together into a cohesive unit. As the first Defender to get his own series, it makes sense that Daredevil would be the one to finally assemble them. He tried his hardest to defend the streets of Hell’s Kitchen on his own, but eventually learned that it’s simply not a job that one man can do alone. As Charlie Cox told Empire, the hero needs help. Mild spoilers for both seasons are below.

At the end of Daredevil’s first season, it wouldn’t necessarily have made sense to see Matt Murdock go out recruiting members of The Defenders. However, considering everything that takes place during the second season of Daredevil, we think it makes a great deal of sense. So much of that season felt predicated on him trying and failing to work as a lone wolf - including the tragic turns that marred his ass-kicking partnership with Elektra - that it now feels natural for him to try and form a larger team to protect the mean streets of New York. We even saw bits and pieces of that during the final moments of Daredevil Season 2, when he finally revealed the truth to a shocked Karen Page.

Of course, just because Matt Murdock seems will to get a team of vigilantes started, that doesn’t mean everyone else will immediately jump onboard. For example, Jessica Jones’ Netflix series proved definitively that the rough-around-the-edges private detective works well alone, and Luke Cage doesn't seem like one quick to embrace group-thought. The Defenders may be on the way, but we wholeheartedly expect some serious growing pains when they finally come together.

We will just have to wait and see how well The Defenders work together when Daredevil finally assembles them. The long-awaited Defenders Netflix series is expected to hit the streaming service sometime in 2017. To see what else is coming out in the coming months, check out our summer TV schedule.

Marvel’s THE DEFENDERS Hires Its Showrunners!!

defenders_large.jpg

Did you enjoy the second season of “Daredevil?”

Because Netflix/Marvel’s “The Defenders,” which will team Matt Murdock with fellow Manhattan superheroes Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Danny “Iron Fist” Rand, will have the same showrunners.

Marco Ramirez and “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” vet Doug Petrie will be those showrunners, working with another “Buffy” vet, executive producer Drew Goddard (screenwriter of “The Martian”) aboard also. Ramirez, Petrie and Goddard all worked on the first season of “Daredevil” as well.

The “Defenders” miniseries will differ from the other four Marvel/Netflix series in that it will consist of eight hour-long episodes instead of 13.

Expect lots of punching.

Marvel's Iron Fist Casts Jessica Stroup & Tom Pelphrey

According to Variety, Marvel has cast Jessica Stroup and Tom Pelphrey to play siblings Joy and Ward Meachum, respectively, in their upcoming Netflix series Iron Fist.

They join a cast that includes Finn Jones as Danny Rand/Iron Fist, Jessica Henwick as Colleen Wing, and David Wenham, who will play Joy and Ward's father, Harold Meachum.

"The children of Harold Meachum (Wenham), Joy and Ward have spent their lives building Rand Enterprises to its current standing in the world, only to have all their work put in jeopardy when Danny returns to claim his birthright," reports Variety. "They are childhood acquaintances of Danny Rand’s who now play an important role in Rand Enterprises."

Stroup, 29, is best known for playing Erin Silver on The CW's 90210 reboot and starring in horror films, like Prom Night and The Hills Have Eyes 2.

Tom Pelphrey, 33, made a name for himself with notable roles in the soap opera Guiding Light and As the World Turns. More recently, you might have seen him as former neo-nazi Kurt Bunker on Cinemax's action drama Banshee.

In Marvel’s Iron Fist, Danny Rand returns to New York City after being missing for years. He fights against the criminal element corrupting New York City with his incredible kung-fu mastery and ability to summon the awesome power of the fiery Iron Fist.

Iron Fist is expected to premiere on Netflix in 2017.

Marvel and Netflix's The Defenders series released its first teaser trailer this evening, and while it mostly consists of character-representational graphics played to the sound of "Come As You Are" by Nirvana, there is one special line of dialogue featured towards the end. A disembodied voice is clearly talking to the members of the titular team -- Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist -- and mockingly says to them, "You think the four of you can save New York? You can't even save yourselves." While we never actually see the mouth presenting these words, the cadence is unmistakable: it's Scott Glenn, who plays Matt Murdock's blind mentor, Stick on Daredevil.

This certainly seems to confirm that the actor will once again be reprising his part in the new Marvel/Netflix show. But given what we know about Stick, it definitely makes us wonder exactly what kind of role he will play in relation to The Defenders team. Given his wealth of life experience -- not to mention context clues from the aforementioned quote -- one might guess that he may be playing some kind of leadership role, helping Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist work together in the face of great evil, but there are other reasons to think that this idea might not make a ton of sense.

Of course, the primary source of the confusion comes from Stick's general attitude -- on display many times through both of Daredevil's first two seasons. While there's no questioning that he has an appreciation and affection for young "Matt-y," he also takes every single opportunity to basically be as dickish as he possibly can. The guy clearly has a lot invested in the philosophy of negative reinforcement, as while he's constantly trying to get his protégé to prepare to fight the good fight in the coming "war," all of his training and lessons come with a side order insults and abuse (and it's especially hard to think of Jessica Jones putting up with all of it).

Horrible as his personality may be, there are also some reasons to think that Stick could be the right guy to organize The Defenders and lead them into battle against whatever terror is facing New York City's streets. Given how stunningly talented Daredevil is, there's no arguing that Stick has a gift for training pupils, even if their skill level is only matched by their angst towards their mentor. The guy also clearly has some key and important resources, as he is always in the know about the biggest dangers that are making their way to the island of Manhattan. He may be a total asshole, but there's an argument to be made that he has the knowledge and skill to give him a pass for all that -- which may wind up being exactly how the members of The Defenders see the situation.

Regardless of what role he is playing, the fact that we will be getting to see more of Scott Glenn's Stick on The Defenders is unquestionably a good thing. However, given that we are still absolutely clueless when the show will air (we don't even know the year at this point), it is still frustrating that such a big question would have no clear answer. We will continue to follow this story in the days, weeks, months, and possibly years ahead -- but for now, hit the comments section with your thoughts on how Stick should be incorporated into the team-up show.

Thanks for the drop. But they need to do better than this if they want to build excitement. Something tells me the criticism from Ironfist is going to carry over into this show. They built up a lot of bad will.

wtf is this bs?????

qvq5yrvmz8vfnzteqyuh.jpg

the tallest character - the black man is the small / lowest one??????
writers: well daredevil started it all so that's why he gets the center and obvious biggest presence in the picture..jessica gets put next to daredevil cause she was the first spinoff and she being the only female character and rep girl power gets a semi big presence in the picture... iron fist was the last installment so he's kinda push in the corner by himself on the rite and kinda has that far from the group look..well luke has the most intimidating look in the pic and is closer to daredevil than jessica in the pic to showoff like he's his protector..now we couldn't have luke overshadow the fourfather of this whole netflix series in daredevil so we had to shrink his obvious presence in the pic

It's just the First Teaser Bills.. give it some slack.

Now if... we might have to have a conversation if the first full trailer is slacking off.

i understand though...

with Iron Fist not popping...and usually Marvel trailer game is hella tight.

I thought these was a complete waste and the Spider-man one actually showed TOO MUCH.
