February 14, 2011, President Obama proposed a minimum of a 1.6% military pay raise in his "Budget of the United States Government, Fiscal Year 2012."

His proposal is based on the on the wage and salary series for private industry workers as indicated in the Employment Cost Index that was released on the last business day in October 2010.

Some in congress are rumbling about a freeze of military pay to the 2011 levels;

freeze y`all dam pay mutha-fukas.....

There is so much misinformation in this thread its not even funny. What non military people don't know is that those scales only show active and reservist BASE PAY. And somebody mentioned something about half of your rent money.:smh:. If you dudes only knew...

Those scales don't include BAS(Basic Allowance for Subsistence) and BAH(Basic Allowance for Housing). This money is based on your rank, dependent status, number of years, and location. AND ITS COMPLETELY TAX FREE. Not to mention if you receive any other special pay for your particular "rate"(job).

Heres a link for the BAH calculator
http://www.defensetravel.dod.mil/site/bahCalc.cfm

Last year me and my girl together cleared over a 100k. Thats with no 6 month deployments. If there were, those numbers would be a lot higher.

Also don't forget that some home states don't make AD military personnel pay state taxes. Pennsylvania being one of them.

I dunno if you were referring to my post. But as far as BAS, BAH, and other allowances. They're tax free. And of course Base Pay is taxed. And depending on what state you're from you may or may not have to pay state taxes(home of origin). I'm from Philly and I havent had to pay state taxes in ten years. There are a few other states that give military personnel tax exemptions. Heres a link.

I'm not in the military and don't know all the facts about what happens when you join (That is the main reason why I made this thread in the first place so people can clear the misinformation, instead of the bitching ). But I do know that people come out the military as a police officer, doctor, lawyer, engineer...etc. I also know that you can be a parent to you children and in the militay at the same time.....

bump for more info..

^^^ This. I've seen many weathered sailors breakdown at their retirement ceremonies when they start to talk about how much time they've spent away from their families and all the things they didn't get to witness first hand.

2 questions. How can you move up as an MP officer and can your wife and kid live with you on the base?

Listen man. The people who live on base are mostly E-4 and below(Single enlisted) or O-7 and above(Special personnel who are required to live on base. For example - Base CO's and XO's). And those high ranking officers are given houses(just a higher standard of military housing, but on base). Are there people between those ranks that live on base? Yes. But who wants to live in the barracks?... If you got a family use your BAH to get your own place or try to get military housing. Military housing usually is located off base.

If your considering the military which it seems you are. All the shit you see in the movies or on TV for the most part is bullshit... Except for the usage of acronyms. And if your talking to a recruiter, most of what they're telling you is bullshit as well. What exactly are you trying to do? And I'll tell you what to expect. Be specific.

Oh btw O1 to O3 usually takes about 4-6 years. Depending on situation.

Depending on your branch of service but in the USAF, it's about 12-13 years...provided that you've been to all the schools, held squadron position, masters degree, Air Command And Staff College out the way, not to mention exemplary record. Yeah, 12-13 years is the window. And that's below the zone. 14-15 is more likely the time most LTCs pin on after theve been selected for about a year.

Nice job breaking that down to the non military cats, but if you are a resident of PA switch your residents before you retire from the military because they hit your retirement pay hardddddddddddddd.

Explain more of the Cost-of-Living Adjustment....

It's not adjustment it's allowance. It a special pay you receive over you base pay, and pay for housing. Here's an example: If you were stationed in Hawaii, and married this is the extra pay you would get for COLA over a 15 day period.

Rank: E5 Sgt
Years of Service: 4
Number of Dependents: 2
Country/State: HAWAII
City: ISLAND OF KAUAI
Location Code: HI003
COLA Index: 0.4
Effective Date: 20110801
Daily COLA: $ 34.333
Daily Unique: $ 0
COLA Payment for Pay Period
1-16-2012 thru 1-31-2012

COLA: $ 549.33
UNIQUE: $ 0
__________
TOTAL PAY PERIOD ALLOWANCE: $ 549.33

Speak for yourself...I retired at 38 years old, and my 1099 for retirement alone was 42,068. I get that for the rest of my life. So what i missed somebody's birthday. That just meant I didn't have to buy something for their azz. I can honestly say that I look back on my life so far, and I can't think of one thing I would do different. Because even when I failed I learned.:)

LMAO, yeahhh you got it right there. There are some wooden headed officers in too. Book smart but dumb as fuck in the AF

Here is what your pay check might look like after 4 years if you are single and stationed in San Antonio, TX:

Base Pay $2267
BAS - Food $348
BAH - Housing $1104

Monthly = $3719

Yearly Income $44,628

That’s $44K after only 4 years (provided you make E-5) with no college, no medical or dental payments, and your college will be paid for.

Oh wait...plenty opportunity to travel the world and fuck bitches-o-plenty as well.

But you will probably go to middle east at some point. More people make it back safely than not, but it's still a risk. So is going to the club though.

Anyhoo... did my time, loved it. Air Force.
