GRENADA, Miss. — The mother of a Grenada child who died after being left in a hot car by her father has asked that all charges be dropped.

Shanice Caradine, mother of 8-month-old Shania Caradine, signed an affidavit Tuesday asking the court to drop all charges against Joshua Blunt. In the affidavit, Shanice Caradine called the incident a "tragic accident."

Blunt, 25, is charged with manslaughter after he left the infant in a car while he went to work.

Blount's attorney Carlos Moore said he hopes Grenada County District Attorney Doug Evans will drop the charges. Moore said it was his understanding that Evans was pursuing the manslaughter charge at the mother's request.

"We have it in writing that the mother of the child doesn't want this," Moore said. "The million dollar question is who is pushing the issue and why?"

Evans said despite Caradine's affidavit, his office is still pursuing the manslaughter charge against Blunt, citing the fact that he was indicted by a grand jury.

Moore has previously accused Evans, who is white, of pursuing the manslaughter charge because Blunt is black, calling the charge an example of "blatant racism."

Less than two weeks before Shania's death, 2-year-old Caroline Bryant died after she was left in a hot car in Madison County by her mother, who is white. Charges have not been filed related to the toddler's death in the Madison case.

Evans said he took the case to the grand jury "because of the facts of the case." He declined to elaborate further, citing a pending trial.

"Do black lives matter all of a sudden when a black father leaves a baby in the car?" Moore said. "We do know that if the baby had been running from a cop and been killed, no one would have done jail time there?"

Blunt's court date is scheduled for Aug 18, but presiding Judge George Mitchell said an order to continue will be entered by Friday. Mitchell cited a scheduling conflict as a reason for the continuance.

Until they pass a law for stupidity they should leave this up to the family to grieve.

The exception would be if they were able to show intent and malice.

This father in no way wanted to kill his child so once again his intent was not criminal it was stupid.

The father had to go to work to feed and support his family.

The mother was detained because she had been in a car accident.

The father could not lose his job and went to work most likely thinking the mother would arrive shortly.

Tragedy occurred.

The shame is that the father worked on a job that he could not miss with pay and was put into a situation to make such a bad decision.

Why does a black father whose eight-month old daughter died when he left her in a hot car face 20 years in prison but a white mother who did the same is NOT charged? Lawyer claims racial bias in Mississippi
  • Joshua Blount's eight-month-old daughter Shania died in May after he accidentally left her in a hot car for hours while he worked
  • A week before, a mother in the same state made the same mistake, resulting in the death of her two-year-old daughter Caroline
  • While Blount was charged with manslaughter in his daughter's death, the other mother (who is white) has not been charged
  • Blount's lawyer claims racism and gender bias have led prosecutors to charge his client and not the white mother

A Mississippi lawyer claims racism and gender bias have led prosecutors to charge his client with manslaughter in the hot car death of his eight-month-old daughter, while a white mother who made the same accident walks free.

Joshua Blount's baby daughter Shania died in May, after he forgot to drop her off at her grandmother's house and left her in his hot car all day while he worked at his job at a restaurant.

After her death, the 25-year-old grieving father was charged with second-degree murder, which was later downgraded to manslaughter.

Just a week before that deadly incident, a mother just 90 miles away in the same state committed the same mistake, leaving her 2-year-old daughter Caroline in her car for eight hours while she worked. However, the 37-year-old mother in that case, Amy Bryant, has not been charged with any crime.

Shania died in May, after Blount accidentally left her in his car all day while he worked

Blount's lawyer Carlos Moore says racism and gender bias play into whether police decide to charge a parent in these saddening incidents.

'We have an African-American male who, I believe, gets less of the benefit of the doubt than anyone in the criminal justice system,' Moore told CBS News.

Professor Matt Steffy of the Mississippi College Law School believes Blount's charges are unfair.

'It appears to be a coin flip,' Steffy said. 'If you meet the right gender and race expectations, you are treated like a grieving parent. Otherwise, you are treated like a criminal and face 20 years in prison.'

I don't think its the mother's call. The real victim is the child. Guess the mom can't stand the idea of losing twice. :smh:
