A slight spinoff of the other movie recommendations thread.

As the title says, are there any movies from your past that you remember loving, only to rewatch and see all the flaws.

And on the same token, are there any movies that you only have half memories of?
Something you remember watching a dozen times and loving in your youth, but now you can't recall any real detail.

Sometime I find it better to just roll with the warm fizzy memories, because rewatching the classics rarely works out perfectly :smh:
Nostalgia is rarely a good friend.

This thread from last night was my inspiration for this thread.
I went back to rewatch Dead Presidents this morning. Probably the 1st time I've seen that movie since the 90s.
I remember really liking the movie and thinking it was too bad that they didn't get away the cash in the end.

Well in 2025, all I can say is fuck that noise !!!!
Every character in that movie is a fucking idiot. Their plan made no sense, and way destined to fail.
You're trying to rob an armored car and your get away driver has one leg and your lookout is on drugs :hmm:
Don't past go motherfucker, just go directly to jail!!!
And even if they did successfully blow off the just door, no part of the plan ever accounted for the driver of the van.

Even the Vietnam war part looked straight laughable.
You can clearly see they're shooting on some California backlot with a bunch of palm trees and dirt around.
And they definitely ain't shooting at shit. They're shaking that camera and the actors are yelling and shooting at .... an enemy we never see

AND THE BIGGEST FUCK YOU OF ALL ....

This motherfucker never got his comeuppance !!!!
I don't know how I didn't realize that as a teen. Cutty came in the movie talking shit and never stopped.

Dead president is based on a true story.. there’s a book not the same title.. I forget how many yrs the actual main person got

to be fair the realization of that robbery scene was that it was realistic on the fact it was actually a failure and went completely wrong.. there’s no happy ending, mad of the individuals died, and the main character got shitted in on in court.. his life kept going down and it never stopped, that’s realism, people were looking for a happy ending and there was none, that’s actually why I liked the movie cause it was a fuck you to Hollywood and it was tragic.. we’ve been forced fed these perfect plans and everything going perfect and making shit look easy and this movie said nope it’s not.. bravo for the execution and reality.. nobody expected that in 95.. actually 1 of my fave Vietnam movies and heist movies…. As far as some of the background effects, etc remember this was made by black directors with a limited budget in the 90s in fact the budget was only 10 million.. so bravo of basically telling 3 diff stories off that small budget.. growing up black in the 60s b4 and after Vietnam war and the trials and tribulations of black soldiers, a Vietnam movie, and a heist movie all in one

As far as this thread goes my fave movies are from the 80s and 90s and yes ive rewatched many to see if some still stand the test of time.. a movie that wasn’t .. here goes to upsetting some people.. “fright night”… my god that movie was boring, cheesy, corny, and kinda gay… after rewatching it I love the lost boys even more than that crap.. I was team lost boys all day b4 but rewatching fright night really made me go wtf did I actually like in that bullshit b4.. I didn’t originally like part 2 of it and couldn’t even dare try to rewatch that crap.. fright night get it outta here

If the movie was made today, larenz tate would have been nominated for an Oscar. Same with his performance in Why do fools fall in love..

Best choke scene .... Ike Turner is that you
Nah that scene came right after he got his ass kicked by Cutty. He got all that smoke for a woman but never went to go see Cutty. And the only lie I think she said was that she was fucking Cutty.
  • Ant being a broke ass bum.... check
  • Them needing the money.... check
  • Ant not being able to get it up.... check
I don't doubt she went right back to fucking Cutty, but I think in the moment she just said it cause his broke ass was all up in her face about it.

He pushed her button first, she hit back with a low bow, so he's starts chocking his pregnant wife in the same apartment their daughter is sleeping in.
Nah cuzzo I can't applause that. Fuck Ant!

I didn’t say I applaud it I’m talking the realism of the choke.. that nig snapped and it really look like he was pissed.. like she had to take a break afterwards and ice down her neck… if it you want to go there, dude was a war vet who was suffering from ptsd and shell shock which a lot of Vietnam war vets suffered from, to come at him about his “dreams” his erection problems ( which was probably also due to mental health issues due to the war) and to talk shit about his financial problems cause the military shitted on a lot of black vets are not things you should ever say to a person in an insulting way.. there are some terms called fighting words and she definitely pushed the trigger.. saying the foul shit is like getting into an argument and telling someone fuck their dead relative or a white man calling a black person the n word or talking shit to a handicap person.. no one would say you won the argument they would say you were a piece of shit and if hands are put on you many people would say it was understandable, not that they condone it but they not gonna be like hey man you were completely in the wrong.. if you were in the military or have fam in the military who suffered those conditions ud understand..like I said b4 that scene was more real than you understand cause a lot of dudes suffered those conditions and some abuse did happen when it came to relationships due to it..like I said movie was way more real than people know..great writing and acting

I'll give you the realism angle. That did hold up and I do admit I seeing some of those elements hit differently watching them as an adult.
Seeing the transformation of the East Bronx thru 3 generations is beautiful & heartbreaking. From the opening walk thru the strip of a beautiful vibrant mixed culture neighborhood fill up smiling faces. To the early 70s post Vietnam black pride Bronx. To a half burned down neighborhood with children outside playing on an abandoned mattress.

And I definitely didn't know as much about PTSD as a teen.
The soldiers didn't even have a name for what was wrong with them. :smh:
I mean the army knew. WWI, WWII, Korea, etc. They can keep renaming the shit all they want, but every war soldiers are coming back with the same condition.

I honestly forgot the movie was based on a real story.
And I never knew about that book.

Definitely adding this to my to do list.

Not to condone it, but surely you can understand how the brother ended up with his hands around a bitch's neck. He showed restraint if you ask me. great acting on both sides though.

I rewatched this movie last night. The only thing I remembered about this was that Paul Walker was really good in that role. I remember thinking that he showed signs that he could bust outta the Fast series and start taking more serious roles.

After a rewatch, I gotta say this movie really hold up well. At no point did I see Paul Walker as goofy Brian from FF. He did a great job playing a mob guy in WAY OVER his head.

The plot gets a little crazy but never loses reality. Even the two kid actors weren't annoying little shits the whole time.

This one is definitely worth another look.

General question for the board. I came across this book at work the other day.
Someone started a little book collection in the corner of a office, and I remembered that title from my childhood.

Very vague fuzzy memories of a an old movie playing on tv all the damn time.
I think it had every black actor from the 70s & 80s that my mom and family grew up loving.
And that it came on on that era of early TNT/HBO cable life when those channels would play the same movie several times a day for months on end. I probably saw/was exposed to this movie half a hundred times in my childhood and yet I cant remember a single thing about the story.

I managed to find the movie and was about to watch it, when I saw the word musical.
Should I let this one rock as a warm, fuzzy childhood memory or should I reengage? :puzzled:
I'm between watching this or Sisu tonight.

I'd say to give it a look and see what you think, and if you're not feeling it ... switch over to Sisu. Saw that one within the past year and change or so.

I hadn't heard of Ragtime before, as I would have been a toddler at the time (early-80s).

Here are the aggregate reviews for both ...

The movie The Warriors

The acting was bad, & I forgot one of the Warriors was a rapist. Plus, this the Warrior movie that was the redux vision so comic book panels were added at the transitional points in the film which made look cartoonish.
