Cubs legend Ernie Banks has died at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, according to a Cubs source.

‘Mr. Cub’ was 82-years-old.

I had the pleasure of meeting him 7 years ago.
I met him at the one and only Cubs game that I ever went to.
He was actually sitting in the stands with "the regular folks"....lol
He was very approachable.....

Ernest "Ernie" Banks (January 31, 1931 – January 23, 2015), nicknamed "Mr. Cub" and "Mr. Sunshine", was a Major League Baseball (MLB) shortstop and first baseman for 19 seasons, 1953 through 1971. He spent his entire MLB career with the Chicago Cubs. He was a National League (NL) All-Star for 11 seasons, playing in 14 All-Star Games.[1]

Banks was born and raised in Dallas. He entered Negro league baseball in 1950, playing for the Kansas City Monarchs. He served in the US military for two years and returned to the Monarchs before beginning his major league career in September 1953. He made his first MLB All-Star Game appearance in 1955. Banks received back-to-back National League Most Valuable Player awards in 1958 and 1959. He hit .313 with 47 home runs (HR) and 129 runs batted in (RBI) in 1958. The next season he hit .304 with 45 HR and 143 RBI in 1959

Never knew he played in the Negro Leagues. RIP; shame he spent his life playing for and supporting that worthless franchise on the Northside.

Pearl Jam played a rain-delayed show at Wrigley Field in 2013 and before Eddie Vedder began singing the Cubs tribute song "All The Way," he introduced Ernie Banks, to the delight of the Chicago crowd.

After the song—which, legend has it, Vedder penned after Banks asked him to write a song about the Cubs—Banks told the crowd the glove he was holding belonged to five-year-old Eddie Vedder and that he would be taking it home with him. That's a pretty cool souvenir for both guys
