A horde of eligible actors entered the Gladiator 2 casting arena (not including Timothée Chalamet, whose manager claims has not auditioned for anything “in more than seven years“), and Paul Mescal has emerged victorious. Per Deadline, the Normal People star is set to lead Ridley Scott’s Gladiator sequel for Paramount. The original 2000 movie starring Russell Crowe as Maximus won five out of the 12 Oscars that it was nominated for, including Best Picture. So, you know, no pressure! The follow-up will center on Mescal as Lucius, a Roman with some pretty well-known relatives: He’s the son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen), the nephew of Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), and the grandson of Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris). Gladiator 2 will be directed and produced by Scott, with Napoleon screenwriter David Scarpa handling the script. Costume designer Janty Yates and production designer Arthur Max, who both worked on the original movie, are also onboard to bring us back to around 200 BCE, when the movie will reportedly be set. Although we first heard that this sequel was in development in 2018, there’s still no word on when it might release. Hopefully we’ll be entertained with more information soon.

Gladiator 2 turns into American Gangster reunion as Denzel Washington and Ridley Scott are set to reunite

Washington is in final negotiations to star in the sequel opposite Paul Mescal.

By Nick RomanoMarch 17, 2023 at 01:26 PM EDT

The Gladiator sequel is set to score some A-list talent.
Denzel Washington is in final negotiations for the movie in a role that's being kept securely under wraps, EW has learned. This casting marks an American Gangster reunion of sorts, as filmmaker Ridley Scott, who directed Washington in the 2007 drama, will helm Gladiator 2.
Paul Mescal will play Lucius, the son of Connie Nielsen's Lucilla and nephew to Joaquin Phoenix's Commodus from the original Gladiator, which was released in 2000.
During the events of that movie, Russell Crowe's Maximus baited Commodus into the colosseum arena and killed him (Crowe's portrayal of the character earned the actor an Oscar). Though Maximus also died from wounds he sustained, he had a tremendous impact on young Lucius, played as a child by Spencer Treat Clark.

Barry Keoghan, nominated for this year's Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his performance in The Banshees of Inisherin, is also joining the cast of Gladiator 2 as Emperor Geta.
Washington starred in Scott's American Gangster, which chronicled the rise and fall of the empire built by Harlem druglord Frank Lucas. The film received two Oscar nominations, but Washington's performance was snubbed.
The Gladiator sequel, with a script written by David Scarpa, is scheduled to hit theaters Nov. 22, 2024.
Deadline was the first to report Washington's casting news.

Denzel Washington Reuniting With Ridley Scott On ‘Gladiator’ Sequel At Paramount

EXCLUSIVE: Almost 16 years ago Denzel Washington and Ridley Scott wowed audiences with their hit crime drama American Gangster, and now it looks like the the two A-listers are ready to get back together in a big way. Sources tell Deadline that Washington is in final negotiations to co-star in Scott’s sequel to his Oscar Best Picture winner Gladiator for Paramount.
Paul Mescal is on board to star opposite Washington, with Scott returning to the director’s chair.

Scott also will produce with Scott Free president Michael Pruss as well as Doug Wick & Lucy Fisher via Red Wagon Entertainment. David Scarpa penned the script. Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald are executive producing.

Also returning from the original film are costume designer Janty Yates and production designer Arthur Max.
The first film was co-production between Universal and DreamWorks, and while DreamWorks will not be involved in the sequel, Universal has the right to partner again when the project is packaged.

Once Mescal was locked for the project, Scott and Paramount Pictures President & CEO Brian Robbins and Co-Presidents Daria Cercek and Michael Ireland pushed hard for a star for the other major role in the film and took a shot with Washington, the two-time Oscar winner. When the offer was first presented there it was unknown whether he would actually do it; Washington is known for his great taste in projects and doesn’t sign up for anything. But after reading the script, sources close to the project said he was excited about the bad-ass role Scott had written with him in mind.
A meeting with Scott soon followed, and after the director gave his pitch, Washington was all but on board.
The new film follows the 2000 blockbuster Gladiator, which earned more than $460 million in worldwide box office and was nominated for 12 Academy Awards, winning five including Best Picture.
The role of Maximus, the Roman general-turned-gladiator, was a career-changer for Russell Crowe, not only delivering him the Best Actor Oscar but also launching him to the top of every leading-man list. Once it was made clear last year that the sequel would be Scott’s next movie, every male actor in town that fit the profile began chasing the part.

Mescal won’t be replacing Crowe’s Maximus, whose character met his end in the original film. Instead he plays Lucius, the son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen), as a grown man as the story takes place years after the first film ended. Lucius also was the nephew of Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), the son of Roman leader Marcus Aurelius who murdered his father and seized the throne. Commodus wound up in the gladiator ring with Maximus who, though mortally wounded, skewered the emperor before fading into the great beyond to reunite with his slain wife and son. Maximus saved the Lucius and Lucilla while avenging his own family, and left a strong impression on the young boy.
Washington’s role is being kept under wraps.

‘American Gangster’Everett
Washington has always had strong ties not only to Ridley but also the Scott family, starring in several films of Ridley’s late brother Tony prior to his death in 2012. After working on Tony Scott thrillers like Crimson Tide and Man on Fire, Washington finally teamed with Ridley Scott on the 2007 crime thriller American Gangster (ironically, that film also starred Crowe). It was a box office hit, and for years Washington and Scott have been looking for that next big thing on which to team.
Washington was last seen in his Oscar-nominated role in Apple and A24’s The Tragedy of Macbeth. He can be seen next in the third Equalizer film for Sony that bows later this year. He is repped by WME.

First footage of Gladiator II reveals Paul Mescal's Lucius in bloody baboon battle

The first visuals from the sequel were shown at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on Thursday.

Gladiator II is officially taking over the Colosseum — the one in Las Vegas, that is.

The first footage from the highly anticipated sequel to the critically-acclaimed 2000 blockbuster Gladiator was screened for CinemaCon audiences Thursday in the aptly titled theater at Caesars Palace in Vegas. In a video introduction from London where he is still working on the film, director Ridley Scott promised the follow-up to his Russell Crowe-starring original is "well worth the wait" and "possibly more extraordinary than the first."

The footage shown in room reveals the first look at Paul Mescal's grown-up character Lucius, the nephew of Commodus and the son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen, who reprises the role) — first played by a young Spencer Treat Clark in the 2000 film. Mescal's Lucius is shirtless and very fit, fighting in the arena, which looks more run down than in the original film. Among his opponents are a man riding a rhino and a stampede of bloodied baboons. But he clearly has Crowe's Maximus and his fateful ending on his mind: "I remember that day. I never forgot it. That a slave could take revenge against an emperor. That a slave could get justice in the arena,” he says at one point.

GLADIATOR, Russell Crowe, 2000, Paul Mescal attends the British Independent Film Awards 2022 at Old Billingsgate on December 04, 2022 in London, England.

Denzel Washington is shown playing what seems to be nobility and a mentor figure to Lucius, possibly hoping he can use the young gladiator to inspire a rebellion. "Can you hear that crowd, the greatest temple Rome ever built, the Colosseum," Washington says in the footage. "This is what they believe in, power."

We also see Stranger Things star Joseph Quinn as an evil-looking Emperor Caracalla. "Your trials will be celebrated with games in the Colosseum," he announces. White Lotus' Fred Hechinger plays a similarly crazed Emperor Geta, and between the two, it feels like the megalomaniacal spirit of the original's villain, Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), has not been forgotten in the sequel.

Pedro Pascal appears to be in a senator-like role, wearing a nice toga and headgear next to the emperor. He is also shown fighting in other footage.

"This ring belonged to Maximus, now I give it to you," Nielsen's Lucilla tells her son in the footage as she presents him a ring.

The footage ends with a subtitle reading, "A rebellion will rise," and Lucius saying, "What we do in life echoes in eternity," in a callback to Maximus' famous quote from the original. If the first look is anything to go by, the sequel will be a bloody, epic return to form, and the CinemaCon audience ate it up, loudly cheering at the start and conclusion. Clearly, they were very entertained indeed.

Legacy cast member, Derek Jacobi, is also returning to play the role of Gracchus. May Calamawy (Moon Knight, Ramy), Lior Raz (Operation Finale), Peter Mensah (Avatar), and Matt Lucas (Wonka, Bridesmaids) also star in the new film.

Scott returns as director, and several other artists who brought the original Gladiator to life are returning to his sequel, as well. This includes cinematographer John Mathieson, production designer Arthur Max, and costume designer Janty Yates. All the Money in the World and Napoleon scribe David Scarpa penned the screenplay.

"Working on this film was one of the standout moments of my life to date," Mescal said as part of the video introduction, which also included remarks from Washington, Nielsen, Pascal and Quinn. "Getting to go to work every day with Sir Ridley Scott behind the camera is a good day to work in any context."

Gladiator II is currently slated for release in theaters Nov. 22.

Getting tired of these 10,20 year gaps between original and sequels. :smh:
This is them just:

A - being lazy
B - being scared or unwilling to try new ideas

They would rather lose $300M on Fast and Furious 27 than try a new idea for a movie that MIGHT fail
