‘Baby Driver’ w/ Sky Ferreira, Killer Mike & more in theaters (stream the soundtrack)
By Bill Pearis June 29, 2017 10:40 AM
One of the best-reviewed films of 2017 so far is
Baby Driver, the new film from the great
Edgar Wright (
Shawn of the Dead, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World) which was released this week. Music is a huge component to all of Wright’s work, but this one is even more intrinsic to the story: Baby (Ansel Elgort) is a getaway driver who times his crew’s heists to pop songs. Wright has had the idea for the film ever since he heard
The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion‘s “Bellbottoms” in the mid-’90s and that song opens the film’s pre-credit sequence. The soundtrack also features tracks by
The Damned, The Incredible Bongo Band, The Beach Boys, Jonathan Richman, Golden Earring, Queen, T-Rex, Beck, and
Simon & Garfunkel’s “Baby Driver.” You can listen to the whole
Baby Driver soundtrack, and watch the trailer for the film, below.
There are some musicians
on screen, too.
Sky Ferreira plays Baby’s mom and she also contributes a cover of The Commodore’s “Easy” which was produced by
Nigel Godrich.
Killer Mike and
Big Boi, who feature on
Danger Mouse‘s “Chase Me” from the soundtrack, also make cameos, as does
Jon Spencer. The film also stars John Hamm, Kevin Spacey, Eliza Gonzalez and Jamie Foxx.
If you’ve seen
Baby Driver and want more heist film action, Edgar Wright has also curated a film series a Brooklyn’s BAM Rose Cinemas called “
Heist Society” that runs
now through July 23 and includes tons of great movies, including ones you may know (
Resevoir Dogs, Heat, Point Break, Ocean’s 11, Dog Day Afternoon), and some lesser known gems like the fun and funny
The Hot Rock (which stars Robert Redford and makes great use of its New York setting), Wes Anderson’s
Bottle Rocket, Peter Sellers and Alec Guinness in Ealing comedy
The Ladykillers, kitschy ’60s Italian film
Danger Diabolik, and
more. A promo trailer for the Heist Society series is also below.
