How to Train Your Dragon is getting ready to take flight — in live action.
Following the recent wave of live action remakes of animated Disney projects — some of which, like
Beauty and the Beast and
Aladdin, have grossed over $1 billion at the global box office — Universal is producing the very first live action remake of a DreamWorks animated movie. Dean DeBlois, who directed the original 2010
How to Train Your Dragon, will helm the live action remake, currently set to release on June 13, 2025.

Ethan Hawke, is set to play protagonist Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III, a young blacksmith apprentice who befriends the dangerous dragon Toothless despite the wishes of his father, the village chief.

Gerard Butler will play Stoick the Vast, the courageous leader of Berk and the distant father of Hiccup. Butler also voiced Stoick in the animated movies, and he’s the only cast member to date to reprise his role from the original movies in live action.

Shaun of the Dead, is set to play Gobber the Belch, the village blacksmith who mentors Hiccup and his friends in their dragon-training escapades.
