Atlanta Hawks to turn arena into a giant voting center

(CNN)The Atlanta Hawks want to make voting safer and easier in their home city.
On Monday, the team announced that their stadium, State Farm Arena, would become Georgia's largest-ever voting center. The basketball team also challenged other franchises to follow suit before the presidential election.
This decision follows a chaotic June 9 primary that saw long lines, voting machine issues, and accusations of voter suppression in the state.
"We always felt we were a community and civic asset. We took that oath as an opportunity and a big responsibility," said Principal Owner Tony Ressler.

The move also comes at a time of growing civil unrest and larger conversations around racial justice. Atlanta saw weeks of protests following the death of George Floyd, and earlier this month, the Atlanta police chief stepped down after the fatal shooting of Rayshard Brooks.

Hawks Coach Lloyd Pierce, a Black man who has been outspoken on social justice and is chair of the NBA's racial justice committee, spoke about the importance of voting following the death of George Floyd: "I was born a Black man, and I know one day I'll die a Black man, just as a lot of players and coaches are on this stage. But I don't want to die because I'm a Black man."
This giant polling center will maintain CDC-recommended social distancing requirements and the Fulton County Registration & Elections will conduct other elections support operations at the site, including absentee ballot processing.
"State Farm Arena is an ideal solution to help us serve thousands of voters while maintaining social distancing requirements," said Mary Carole Cooney, chairperson of the Fulton County Board of Registration & Elections. "We appreciate the Hawks for coming to us with this creative solution."

To provide greater accessibility to voting, the Hawks Foundation will also provide free parking, with more than 1,500 parking spaces around the arena.
Steve Koonin, CEO of the Hawks, tweeted: "Let your voice be heard..get out to vote. We look forward to welcoming Fulton County voters to State Farm Arena."
The polling center will be open for the primary runoff election on August 11 and early voting for the general election scheduled for November 3.

LeBron James’ group touts sports venues as mega-voting sites

ATLANTA (AP) — If basketball icon LeBron James gets his way, NBA arenas and other sports venues around the country will be mega polling sites for the November general election.

James and his voting rights group, formed this spring with other black athletes and entertainers, are joining with other professional basketball leaders and Michigan’s top elections official to push for mega voting sites to accommodate in-person balloting amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

More Than A Vote, the James organization dedicated to maximizing Black turnout in November, shared its plans with The Associated Press on Wednesday after the Detroit Pistons became the second NBA franchise to announce plans to use its arena for voting later this year. In Georgia, Fulton County elections officials this week approved the Atlanta Hawks’ proposal to use State Farm Arena as a polling site. Plans call for the arena to serve as a countywide early voting site ahead of Election Day.

The idea, which comes after Kentucky used large facilities in its June 23 primary, is to use large spaces that allow for in-person voting while still enforcing social distancing guidelines. It also underscores the attention on the mechanics of voting amid the pandemic, with the intensity already reflected in both President Donald Trump and Democratic challenger Joe Biden warning that state and local officials have the power to “corrupt” the election.

Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson called her “partnership” with the Pistons an “blueprint for other teams and leagues seeking to advance our common goal of protecting access to the vote for all.”

Lloyd Pierce, head coach of the Atlanta Hawks, said the arrangement in his city ensures “high turnout” in a safe environment. Benson, Pierce and David Fizdale, former New York Knicks head coach, will advise NBA franchises and arena management entities around the country on how to replicate the existing deals.

Don’t you have to vote in your own district? Philips Arena is located in Fulton County, so how can I vote if I live in Gwinnett county?

Unlike the Republicacs in charge, I think that along with the training needed for the people with the machines.... they'll be trying to iron out all bugs and hurdles.... I'm sure that Stacy Abrams will have a hand in helping... she was talking to Joy Reid about this subject on MSNBC LIVE: DECISION 2020 in the old Hardball slot... I don;t think anyone has posted it yet, maybe you can find a link for it on one of your sites? :dunno:

If they can use large churches and community centers, school gymnasiums why not sporting arenas to accommodate Voters. This is great way to counter the voter suppression that’s been going on.
