Ten Takeaways From 12/5/24
ONE) Serbian Heritage Night
I wish I had tracked Nikola Jokic's (27 points, 20 rebounds, 11 assists, 28.2 USG%) performances on Serbian Heritage Night in the past because I swear to God, each one has been legendary. He passes Magic Johnson for third on the all-time triple-double list. Lots of folks are giving him a hard time for a rough third quarter (4 points, 2-7 FG, -11) since that’s when the Cavs pulled away but come on. Are we so spoiled that we won’t allow this man to be off for 12 minutes of a game?
Kenny Atkinson was talking about how Caris LeVert (21 points, 82.3 TS%, 5-6 3PT) struggled to find a rhythm since returning from injury but he found it here. Four different Cavs scored 20+ and a lot of it was from three.
Cleveland: 22-48 3PT (45.8%)
Denver: 6-24 3PT (25.0%)
That’s a 48-point difference in case you don’t wanna math it up. I mean, Donovan Mitchell had as many threes as the entire Nuggets team (6). You’re just not gonna win many games like that. Ty Jerome missed this one with an illness. Isaac Okoro left with a knee contusion and did not return.
"I really don't know. I really don't know." - Nikola Jokic on how the Nuggets can win with that kind of three-point disparity.
Cavs beat the Nuggets 126-114. They’re the first team to reach 20 wins.
TWO) Luka Had One Too
Jokic wasn’t the only one climbing up the triple-double ladder. Luka Doncic (21 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists) gets his first one of the season. It’s the 78th of his career and he moved into a tie with Wilt Chamberlain and James Harden for seventh place on the NBA’s all-time triple-doubles list. Mavs covered the 14.0-point spread with ease, scoring 137 points on 67.9 TS%. Just absurd shot-making (20-28 3PT) and even worse defense.
The Wizards had no Kuz, George, Baldwin Jr., or Kispert so they rocked with Marvin Bagley (16 points, 8 rebounds, 24 minutes) at the 4 next to JoVal. With all these injuries, you’d think they’d be more careful with Brogdon after leaving Tuesday’s game with knee soreness. He was questionable coming in but they still let him play. He was trending for 30+ before having to leave with left hamstring tightness. Why are they even risking it with one of their main trade candidates?
“Just to be up there mentioned with those great names, it’s unbelievable to me. I never take it for granted.” - Luka on tying Wilt and Harden
Mavs beat the Wizards 137-101. Washington’s lost 16 straight.
THREE) Thibs is a Fucking Mad Man
I’m not breaking any news here but the Knicks were comfortably ahead for the entire second half. A twenty-point lead for most of the 4th quarter and Thibs didn’t pull his starters until a minute and a half left in the game. Mikal Bridges (19 points, 7 assists) was on his way to playing the entire 48 but got spared at the end. Brunson (24 points, 20.0 USG%) was the only one who didn’t play in the fourth because he was dealing with a lower back injury. He later returned to the bench with a wrap-around. Precious Achiuwa (2 points, 4 rebounds) made his season debut after injuring his hammy in the preseason. He played 12 minutes and most of it was alongside KAT. Jericho Sims was the first big off the bench, played a 3-minute stint, and wasn’t seen again.
I thought there was a chance KJ Simpson (0 points) could start after closing over Vasilije Micic (14 points, 12 assists) on Tuesday but I was dead wrong. Micic played his most minutes of the season (35). Mark Williams got up to 10 minutes after playing 8 in his debut. Moussa Diabate (16 minutes) is still in the rotation… for now. Charles Lee was talking about Diabate pregame and it sure did sound like he was talking about a man who was about to be out of the rotation.
"...very confident with his work ethic and has a very smart, curious mind. He's going to continue to grow. Minutes will be tough for him as we get bigs back and their minutes start to grow, but he's been a true pro and handled it really well." - Charles Lee on Moussa Diabate
“I feel amazing. I’ll see how I feel tomorrow. And that’s it.” - Jalen Brunson on his back injury
Knicks beat the Hornets 125-101.
FOUR) SGA From Three
I’m not sure if it was his return home to Canada or what but Shai came out firing against the Raptors. Guy had a 45.2 USG% in the first quarter, attempting 12 shots. SIX OF THEM FROM 3! He didn’t make any of them but man, it feels good to see him trying to add this to his game. He eventually made a three in the third and finished the game going 1-for-10. This is already his fourth game this season attempting 10+ threes. Had done that just three times before this season, all in 2021. Lu Dort’s (6 points, 3-12 FD, 0-6 3PT) mallet finger has really affected his shot. Over his last eight games, he’s averaging 5.1 PPG on 34.8 TS%. Alex Caruso (8 points, 17 minutes) is back after missing the last five games with a hip strain.
Raptors also got back Gradey Dick (15 points, 23 minutes, 18.6 USG%) after missing five games with a calf contusion. I was excited to see this team almost be whole but then Jakob Poeltl had to miss with an illness. Something always happens to this team when they get someone back, right? Jonathan Mogbo, Ja’Kobe Walter, Jamal Shead, and Jamison Battle all played a double-header after playing a game earlier in the day with the Raptors 905 team. First time a team has had four players play a G League game and an NBA game on the same day.
Thunder beat the Raptors 129-92. I know, a whole lotta blowouts.
FIVE) Ja Gets Ejected (on some BS)
The ejection is gonna get the headlines but whenever you get the chance, watch what led to it. He got his second tech because of the reaction he had to a phantom foul call on DeMar DeRozan. He was pointing at the ref and saying mean things (putting it lightly). A little bit of context: He was having his worst game of the season (8 points, 27.1 TS%, -32) and it was a one-point game with about seven minutes left in the fourth. Still though, the refs blew the call and later admitted it in the pool report. That’s now back-to-back Kings games where the refs were the story. And again, Taylor Jenkins only played one guy (Bane) over 30 minutes. He said there is a chance he could move to a 9 or 10-man rotation at some point this season. Ha! He also said they weren’t comfortable with Zach Edey’s progression and will continue monitoring him over the next couple of weeks,
With Malik Monk now in the starting lineup, the Kings have a big problem with the bench. There’s not much scoring. They lost the bench battle 60-15! This is the fourth-worst bench-scoring team in the league (25.3 PPG). Speaking of, Keon Ellis (0 points, 2 minutes) continues to be down bad. Sacramento’s still struggling from three (8-35 3PT, 22.9%). They went 2-of-18 in the second half.
“In live play the official thought that Morant bumped DeRozan on his jump shot. However, after postgame review Morant was in legal guarding position and should not have been called for a foul.” - NBA Official
Grizzlies beat the Kings 115-110.
SIX) Not On Herb
Feels really good to get to type that again. Herb Jones returned after missing the last 18 games with a right shoulder strain. Brandon Ingram also returned after missing the last 5 with his right plantar tendonitis. This was the first game Trey Murphy, Dejounte Murray, and Ingram played together as teammates. For the first time in forever, the Pels had five of their top six guys available. Officer Herb got the start, sending Trey Murphy back to the bench cause of course. They love bringing him off the bench for some reason. Willie Green said Ingram and Jones would probably play around 30 minutes. Ingram played 36, Jones played 31. BI scored 21 of his 29 points in the third and Herb made the game-clinching block on Devin Booker’s last-second three. Good to see them look like an NBA team again.
Devin Booker scored 52 points in each of his previous two games at the Smoothie King Center. Looked like he was well on his way to getting there again after he scored 15 in the first quarter. He finished with 28. Bol Bol (6 points, 4 rebounds, 10 minutes) made a rare appearance and Mason Plumlee (4 points, 10 rebounds, 26 minutes) started for Nurk this time around instead of Oso Ighodaro (4 points, 20 minutes).
"We understand that nobody woke up and decided they wanted this to happen to our team. There is no one to blame but we are in it. We have to embrace being here... Our group sticks together." - Willie Green on handling the psychology of a losing streak
Pelicans beat the Suns 126-124. The nine-game losing streak’s over. Suns are 1-7 without Durant.
SEVEN) Sick of Vuc Yet?
Seriously think I write up Vuc every time the Bulls are on a slate and I’m still not used to it. Scores a season-high 39 points on 79.1 TS% (16-22 FG). Knew this would happen as soon as I saw the Spurs starting Sochan at center for Wemby (back). A lot of y’all know this but any time the Bulls are matched up with an undersized 5, they let Vuc go to work. I’m not gonna keep writing about how much he’s improved as a shooter cause shit gets old but he’s having a career year (68.7 TS%). Ayo Dosunmu (27 points, 10 rebounds, 11 assists) recorded his first career triple-double. What’s funny is that he got a rebound taken away from him late, but was able to grab another with under three minutes left before getting subbed out. Woulda been a really lame way to lose out on your first. Matas Buzelis continues to impress in limited minutes (11 points, 7 rebounds, 18 minutes). He had to leave the game late after getting hit in the face. The nose kept bleeding. Bulls scored a season-high 139 points.
As mentioned above, Spurs went with Sochan (16 points, 14 rebounds) at the 5 for Wemby (back) but they’re still not starting Devin Vassell (17 points, +7). He played just 24 minutes despite being the only Spur with a positive +/-. The way he spoke after the game, I’m gonna guess he sits in the B2B against the Kings. Sochan keeps shoving the Best Ball fade in my face and is somehow already playing full minutes (35) after looking gassed on Tuesday in 21 minutes.
“I don’t wanna say what they say but we’ll see. I wanna play. I’ll tell ya that. I wanna play every game.” - Devin Vassell when asked if the team has told him the plan to play in the B2B
Bulls beat the Spurs 139-124. Do you think San Antonio held Wemby out because that Bulls pick that’s owed to them is top-ten protected this year? Are they playing chess?
EIGHT) Kuminga Takeover
These are the games that make you wonder why Kuminga isn’t playing more. He scores a career-high 33 points on 67.0 TS% (36.8 USG%). The fourth quarter was pretty much; get him the ball and get out of the way (14 points). Guess if he was more consistent, they’d be playing him more but good job by him taking full advantage of the opportunity. Going up against one of the best defenses in the league, not having Steph or Dray, and looking like that? Even hit three 3s! Everyone knows how easy it is for him to get to the rim but man, it’ll get a whole lot easier if he’s making shots. Speaking of Draymond, they got some good news earlier in the day with a clean MRI on his calf. He could be cleared as early as tomorrow. Kerr said the plan is that Steph does play tomorrow. Warriors essentially went 9-man today with Pat Spencer only playing 6 minutes. Who knows how many they go against the Wolves but Lindy Waters has been a DNP-CD in two straight, even with the injuries so safe to assume he’s out of the rotation.
Sengun’s slow starts are starting to pile up. Over the last five games, he’s averaging 5.4 points in the first half. He had four points through three quarters before scoring 12 in the fourth (37.5 USG%). Kevon Looney (4 points, 11 rebounds) was making life hell for him. Udoka wasn’t happy at all with the effort.
"Guys weren't sharing the ball. All the things we've done to have a decent record have kind of gone out the window the last few games." - Ime Udoka
“They wanted me to go out there and get the ball. They trusted me. That kind of boosted me. Kinda helped me to be confident. I took a deep breath, and I went out there and took care of the ball.” - Kuminga on having Steph and Dray hype him up from the bench
Warriors beat the Rockets 99-93. 15th straight win over Houston.
NINE) No Suspension
While we’re on the Rockets, thought it was pretty wild that all they were given were fines for what happened on Tuesday in Sacramento.
Udoka - $50K
Eason - $35K
Sengun - $15K
The explanations were given via press release:
“Udoka was fined for confronting and directing profane language toward a game official, failing to leave the court in a timely manner after being ejected, and public criticism of the officiating during his postgame press conference.
Eason was fined for throwing a towel and directing inappropriate language in the direction of a fan in the spectator stands after the game had concluded.
Sengun was fined for directing inappropriate language toward a game official."
I understand Sengun and Udoka not getting suspended but Tari was legit going after a fan and had to be held back by security according to the report. It wasn’t just throwing a towel and using inappropriate language. Unless the report’s wrong, I dunno. There was no footage of the incident. Either way, he’s in concussion protocol so maybe it doesn’t even matter. He missed the game regardless.
TEN) Joel Embiid Was Trending Towards Playing Tomorrow…
But he’s been downgraded to OUT.
Sorry, had to include it for the vibes. OK, maybe he wasn’t exactly trending to play but Nick Nurse said on Wednesday that there’s a chance he’d play on Friday. He's not even being listed as doubtful so it sure feels like a downgrade. That’ll be seven straight games since the swelling became s problem. Big yikes.
Adem Bona is also out with a left knee contusion and Andre Drummond got upgraded to questionable. I thought he’d be more on the doubtful side but he did say that he’s a fast healer and that he’d be back in days so maybe.
Bullshit call on Morant
