Very much plugged in as any reporter.
Thank you for your comment. If something went down, I missed it. I was busy yesterday.
However, you’ve given me an opportunity to say something:
I was ESPN’s and CBS’s first female NFL Insider for a reason. I’ve been covering the NFL since 2002 and breaking national NFL news since 2005. I am not a newly-emergent insider, reporter or TV talent on the scene. I’ve been here for a long time—not as long as Adam Schefter, Jay Glazer, Chris Mortensen (rip) etc., but I have a footprint or two—especially as a woman. Some may say that’s pioneering, I call it a blessing and remain grateful to the supportive people who continue to help me over the last two decades (in the NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB, wherever).
Over the years, I’ve pressed for equal credit on bottom lines, diversification in makeup rooms, to respect in meeting rooms, newsrooms, locker rooms, press boxes, and in the field. Now, I find myself in the independent-medIa whilst reviewing old access policies and bias, as the concept & landscape of legacy media and its representative faces rapidily changes too. I pray I’ve played a role in amplifying vigilance over these matters over time, and for others on now & those upcoming.
No one is perfect and I am certainly no different, but I’ve always worked hard and focused on knowledge first.
I appreciate those who still ring my phone, show up on my shows, though you rarely see my face in more recent years. That’s no easy feat when you are unattached to a major corporation and it’s daily benefits. Its much easier to wither away and be forgotten. Thankfully, it’s a testament to longstanding relationships and deep-rooted equity.
When I look at some of the things I see happening in our industry, and quite frankly things that blind-eyes get turned to, I wouldn’t be human if I didn’t admit it’s hard not to feel miffed about my absence this season on the sidelines and in-studio relative to one’s skill-level, knowledge, catalog of news, interviews, and sit-down exclusives.
Nine months ago I thought I was getting a raise & increased utilization relative to the aforementioned I was bringing my last network, instead I received a 3m call saying —hey you aren’t being renewed (along with others), 29 days after I just bought my first house.
A few months before that at Super Bowl, a top network executive walked up to me and said ‘you’ve helped us out so much & have been a big part of us growing this year,’ —then later, the unexpected news and just one sole insider, as it seems preferred regardless of said gravitas and longer-standing equity and among those on the frontier.
I just recently watched Christmas games on Netflix featuring no black female journalists.
It’s not woe is me, because I’ve always been willing to do the work and will continue to let that accumulate and speak for itself—because there’s potency in longstanding presence and weight of voice.
There is so much more I could say and know, but at the end of the day I’ve put a lot into this business and sacrificed a lot personally in passion of my career.
We should always have courage to see things improved, and be given due respect.
Having gone through my own ups and downs, I try to continously remind myself to be more mindful of offering grace to others, whilst wanting it offered in return.
I know personally how life can change on a dime. Like many others as well and have never been on a magic carpet ride.
I just want the very best for everyone on the playing field equally, in any industry— sans politics, and personal favorites.
Knowing you deserve your chair, is never taking anyone else’s away.
Stay strong, stay excellent.
Have a blessed day.
