PC upgrades

I am trying to find out if there are pc scanners to find compatible upgrades for hardware other than ram and hard drives. just got an old pc from my sister for my son to play around on and I would like to be able to find some other parts for it but it's like 5 or 6 years old.

At a certain point which comes VERY quick. Changing anything but more Ram is a waste of money

Is there anything like the crucial scanner for other components though? That tells you what you can add not what you have already.
