Saginaw mother found infant son under debris after truck hit house: ‘There wasn’t a scratch on him’
SAGINAW, MI — Two months after welcoming her son into the world, a Saginaw mother nearly lost him when a pick-up truck crashed into her home. Though debris rained down on the infant, he managed to emerge from the freak collision without any injuries.
“We went to the hospital after, and he’s perfect,” said the newborn’s mother, Shaneka Cannon, with gratitude and amazement. “There wasn’t a scratch on him. There’s nothing wrong with him.”
After putting her son down for a nap the afternoon of Saturday, Sept. 27, Cannon stepped onto the front porch of her one-story home at 2818 Beechwood Ave. Talking on her cellphone to her boyfriend, Cannon had her back turned as she heard a loud noise.
She turned around in time to see a gray Chevrolet Silverado bound down the street and jump the curb.
“It flew straight at my house,” she said.
Cannon leapt from her porch and fell just as the truck crashed through her bedroom wall.
Inside the bedroom was her sleeping, baby son. Elsewhere in the house was Cannon’s 9-year-old son, whom she heard screaming.
Meanwhile, the Silverado’s driver was ejected from the cab and landed on Cannon’s roof. Cannon ran inside and found her baby on her bed.
“Everything had fallen on him,” she said. “He had glass on him, drywall.
In a flurry, Cannon began tossing the debris aside to find her baby. She found him and gathered him in her arms, after which she and her older son ran outside.
Cannon’s legs weakened, and she collapsed down the block. Just about then, a fire erupted under the truck’s hood as the vehicle remained jutting out of her house. The flames billowed upward, but firefighters doused them and pulled the truck’s driver, a 28-year-old Bridgeport Township man, from the roof.
Cannon is a behavior technician who works with children on the autism spectrum.
She is on unpaid maternity leave and her home was uninsured.
A
GoFundMe campaign has been established to help Cannon and her children get back on their feet with new lodgings. As of 2:20 p.m. Monday, the page had garnered $2,135 from 42 donors.
The baby, born in July, managed to avoid any injuries when glass and drywall fell onto him.
