Question about Self Hair Cutting - Tips and Tools

I know we had a thread about this a while back, but I can't find it.

I want to start cutting my own hair.

I did it myself today with some clippers I had laying around and it came out pretty well. I had guards on the clippers so I didn't fuck myself up.

For others that cut their own hair:

  1. Any recommendation on clippers
  2. Any other pointers and tips?
I've also looked on YouTube, but I trust my BGOL Brothers to point me in the right and best direction.

I use Bevel blade for my face. There is a thread on the bevel system.

I need to cop that Bevel trimmer eventually. Just can't justify $200 on a trimmer.

I cut my son's hair but need to get nicer before doing mine. This thread is right on time.

Learned in high school can't give myself a bald fade but a regular (ceaser) ain't hard. Go to a good barber that knows ya head and get a shape up. Like dude said above buy the same quality clippers ya barber buy. Then every few days go back over ya face following his line. After practice for a while it became 2nd nature.

That's exactly what I did, a caesar. Using the guards protected me. My wife got home and asked if I went to the barbershop today :D

The clippers I used were some old cheap ass ConAirs I bought from Walmart like over 10 years ago, but they did the job.:yes:

Invest in nice hats. You'll need them your first six months or so.

Hopefully I'll never fuck up :smh: but not a bad idea

Practice. Watch what your barber does when he/she is cutting your hair. Then try to carefully mimic it. Watch Youtube vids and buy standard great clipper/trimmers (Andis, Wahl, Oyster). If you have a beard, a razor will come in handy when lining, but its tricky to master.

Oster 76 for general cuts.

Styliner for detail & facial hair removal.

T-Liners for edges & shape-ups.

A good coarse brush, for when you cut & need to brush the hair down (to see how much work is left to do). Not everyone needs this, they got that good baby hair...not my black ass though...

A big handheld mirror for cleaning up the back of your neck (usually the hardest thing for people to do). And a nice sized front facing mirror for the lineup.

Make sure where you cut your hair at has a lot of light. You'll be surprised how much detail you miss in basic light that gets exposed once you out in the real world.

Oil your blades when you first use them to cut, when you feel the clippers get hot (cut the clippers off & brush the hair off/out the blades, then oil...you might have to do this more than once) & when you are done cutting (once again, cleaning the hair off the blades first). You'll be surprised how many people don't do this & get dull blades or neck herpes.

Practice giving yourself a shape up every two weeks first. You need to learn the shape of your head, trust me. You'll fuck up, don't fix it. Pay attention to it & let the hair grow back & clean it up when you do your next two week shape up (unless you zeked the shit out of yourself & gotta go bald...in that case, start over...) .You'll stop fucking up & realizing the dimensions of your head. And if you got head wrinkles, just leave them alone. At this point, you either gonna scalp your whole back head or put long ass bald lines in your head. Trust me on this one.

Oh, and practice using your left hand for lining your neck in the back...it is so much easier. I'm ambidextrous & it took me some time. The whole backwards thing & what-not.

This should help for giving yourself a nice Caesar. Fades & such are a whole another level...

I'm back at the barbers this year.

You have to commit to being a weirdo when cutting your hair.
Nah bruh.. I am tight with my self cut skills. No one would ever guess that I cut it myself. Been doing it for years.

Rubbing alcohol. If you're not using a mirror, get intimate with the back of your head with your fingers after a BARBER cuts your hair. Don't cut against the grain for any reason.

Fact 1: Shit won't be as clean as the barber can do it even when you master it as far as possible.

Fact 2: After you fumble around a bit and master it as far as you can you will look fresher way more often than average than folks who rely on others to do it for them.

It's a worthwhile investment to spend a bit of time on.

The guards on the 76s don’t adjust though, do they?

something good to buy... "Just A Trim" clippers. This thing is great for fixing fuck ups and for just evening out hair when you don't want to risk another pass with your Andis Master. You hold it like you would a brush/comb, so it's not at all awkward, even when you're holding a mirror and cutting the hair on the back of your head. This wouldn't be your primary clipper, but it's a good supplement to your Andis/Wahl shits:

Nope... Never get it as crispy as a barber. But I never look like I need a cut either. Always a good line, and no fuzzies sticking up. Every couple days knock the fuzzies off, and go back overy line. Been doing it going on 10 years now.

I’m starting to do my own front line up with a razor. I’m tired my uneven hairline being “fixed” by a barber and pushing my shit back and around.

My advice..
1)Get some 25-30$ Wahl clippers on Amazon..
If you’re just looking for a Caesar type cut... use the No. 1 guard to cut your hair going with the grain. That’ll keep it long enough to wave up
2) Get it lined at a barber every week or two.. to keep it looking crisp
